This was actually very informative! The reaction to the cranial nerve stimulation was very interesting. Thank you for posting!

Wonderful video thanks. I'm referring it to a friend who is having saddle fit issues. Just saw Joanna give several lectures at Equine Affair and was very impressed with what she had to say.

Excellent video. This is going to help me fit a jumping saddle for my haflinger who has a wide back. Loved your explanation (I'm a physical therapist) - it made perfect sense. Thank you.

@jordand196911. just because you're standing right behind a horse doesn't ALWAYS mean that horse will kick. especially if its a kind horse that you know.

Great stuff, thanks. Allow me please to suggest the most comfortable saddle Iknow. Type in MONTURA VAQUERA and check out the Spanish stock saddle (from Spain not South America). In-built padding, no need for a blanket (can use an English one), tail strap to keep it in place, no horn (we don't use it in Spain), one girth and always sheepskin to sit on (synthetic or natural, you choose). Just try it, I'm sure you'll like it, there is no saddle like it in the world.You can find them in the USA.

Hi! You can find all of the saddle fitting videos on the Bay Area Equestrian Network site. There's a Western saddle fitting video, too. Thanks for watching! Kathryn, Producer, Padma Video

I don''t understand 1 thing.. you say the left shoulder is bigger, but how do you see that on this horse.. I thought the right was bigger when you had the camera behind.

@jordand196911. If you walk quickly behind a horse that doesn't know you're there it might kick you because you have startled it. When walking behind a horse you should touch him as you're walking around him, letting him know that you are there. You should always walk closely to the horse if you are walking behind it because if it does kick you will not catch the full force of the blow. I have owned and handled horses my whole life, never been kicked walking or standing behind one.

I have a question... It may be kind of dumb to you lol but if your horse is in an english saddle and it is pinching, can you ass an extra pad? or will that just make it worse? please reply! thanks :)
@AnnaSpleen6610 жыл бұрын
I heard it makes it even worse, like if you were trying to put thick socks in thight shoes ;)
@sierrajade45879 жыл бұрын
If it is pinching due to being too narrow, extra padding will make the problem worse. It's like wearing thick socks with shoes that are already too tight. Hope this was helpful

Nicely shot video with good explanations however the BS about the Mane is utterly ridiculous to me. I am a a breeder of TB racehorses and sport horses and a 9th generation Saddler, and totally just do NOT agree with the "mane statement"; much too many variables involved in the "mane statement"; though I do agree that horses are "left or right" sided and even more so racehorses are "diagonally balanced". kudos to the Producers; Rice Saddlery, LLC

I fit my saddle ahead of your hand. Forward of cranial nerve 11. Not on it or behind it. That just doesn't work my dear. The shoulder is a swinging blade not a joint. The blade still moves freely below the saddle. I can feel the difference when ridden. If the forefront of my saddle is behind the shoulder muscle as you describe. There's trouble, resistance and pain. But then again you did sit an English Saddle on it. They don't fit anyways. Do him a favor and wing that into the bush.

Once, just once, I'd like to see people NOT adding in their own silly crap to what otherwise is good advice. The mane stuff is baloney -many horses have their manes "trained" as youngsters to one side or the other, and this will last a lifetime unless the mane is roached. Horses do get one-sided, but you address this through a conditioning program, not saddle fit. Otherwise, the advice is fairly good - many people put their saddles too far forward and restrict the horse's motion.
