Before the arrival of world cup winner Leo messi, inter miami were on a 11 game winless streak, struggling to create chances and generally looking out of synch on a lot of their plays. But just two months later and inter miami are the leagues cup winners, looking like a completely different team and creating chances from all over the pitch. But this success isn’t just down down to messi, and their new coach Gerardo Martino has given the team some much needed structure.

It's obviously the collective changes. One man is never enough to completely turn around a team. Had Messi came into Neville's team they probably lose early in the League's Cup. However, under Martino's system and the addition of Busquets, Alba, and the 3 young Argentinian signings they have transformed themselves. The best sign of this is how players that were already there have looked excellent. Robert Taylor was arguably competing with Messi for MOTM honors in the first couple games. Josef Martinez has looked back to his ATL Utd form. Cremaschi now looks like a future star. And of course Yedlin is playing better than he has in several years. Messi is obviously the cherry on top of this transformation, but he couldn't have done it alone.

Messi has made all the players in Inter Miami believe in themselves and play to their fullest potential. Think about it, Drake Callender (GK) he was 3rd choice goalkeeper and now the dude is one of the most recognized in MLS and even getting called up to US Mens national team. Benjamin Cremaschi, he's the future of the team, born and raised in Miami and there's been talks that he might even be considered playing for Argentina prior to Messi getting there, this wasn't even a remote possibility, he's definitely impressing. Leo Campana scored two great headers that one game, he's probably never had anyone that can place the ball with pinpoint accuracy like Messi, Robert Taylor is playing very well.... the list goes on. These guys are looking world class because of Messi, but they always had the talent, just needed someone to unleash their talent, everyone wants to impress.

So refreshing to see someone highlight other things than just messi this and messi that. We can clearly see that the addition of Tata, Messi, Alba, and Busquets is an attempt to level up the play and overall team culture of Inter Miami, to see the likes of Cremaschi and Taylor step up to the plate, also the likes of Martinez and Campana moving freely is such a refreshing sight to see. They aren't playing like they were a month or two ago, they don't play like they're bottom of the standings, even if they don't make it to playoffs during the MLS season, winning the Leagues cup and making the US Open Cup final (and a possibility of winning it) are exciting signs on how things will look at the near future. People tend to forget on how this team has so much potential on paper, even before Messi came over, with the likes of Taylor, Yedlin, Martinez, Callendar, Campana, and Cremaschi. Now it's slowly bearing fruit.

This is also a story about how squad construction under MLS salary rules work. You always have to make trade offs, and in order to make these transfer’s possible they needed to position themselves to be able to have 2 open Designated Players spots out of 3, they needed to make sure one of those three was under 23 or 1.6 million per year, and they needed to have a bunch of “allocation money”. To do that they needed to keep the one contract buy out MLS team are allowed per year, they needed to trade away some players for Allocation and they needed one of their previous DP players to be on a relatively low salary for a DP. DP’s basically don’t count toward the salary cap after the first 600k, two of those three slots were needed for Busquets and Messi and they needed to use the buy out to get one of those back. General Allocation money (we call it gam) is basically liquid cap space, so it lets you spend more than the fixed salary cap. It can be traded between MLS teams as part of transfers. They needed this to get one of their lower paid DP’s under the the limit to no longer be a DP and get that other slot. They also needed a bunch to be able to pay Alba, while not having to use a DP slot with him (I also expect they promised him a very cushy job after retiring). And making sure their last DP slot was under 23 years old let’s them use the full 3 “u22” contracts. Those are basically mini-DP slots that can only be used to sign young talent under 22 years old with the idea that teams who want to develop young players should get some incentives, rather than just signing old vets. They are not allowed to be paid unlimited amounts like full DP’s, but their transfer fees don’t count against the salary cap and their salaries count far less than otherwise. Basically Miami planned the tactics and the money in conjunction in order to make this happen, which is even more impressive, and makes me angry as a sounders fan. The guy that they brought in to figure out how to pull the money side off, Chris Henderson, used to do the same kind of magic for us.

It was an idea orchestrated by Beckham and its an easier pitch. He already had a vacation home in Miami and this was talked about as one of those 1% chances possibility back soon after the club was created. They couldn’t anticipate the Saudis getting into sports but the MLS is one entity so they got him because they would allow him to go to any club. The MLS is like the NFL with even more control.

Miami pays his salary not, MLS. There are plenty of owners in mls who couldn’t even realistically afford his 50 million in wages.

Even though football is a team sport where tactics and players' performance are essential, I still consider Messi to be the most significant factor in making the team successful. He does things that nobody else can do like the free kick vs. Cruz Azul to win the first game or yesterday's assist in the 98' minute to tie the game against Cincinnati. Even though the players play better as a team and some individual players have improved their performance significantly, they still can rely on Messi to save them in the last ball and win or tie those complicated games. And if they go to penalties, he takes the first one, which gives the rest of the team a boost in confidence.

Finally someone with a real analysis of football!! Yes, agreed 100% with everything you said. I’m glad someone has touched on all the points that have changed Inter Miami inside out. Busquets, Jordi Alba and Messi, are three WC winners and CL winners. Martino is a La Liga winner, has plenty of experience in Copa America, CL, WC and MLS tournaments. As well, he had already managed these 3 players. So, there are all these elements plus the fact of the gigantic confidence boost to the rest of the team and for sure, the enthusiasm that creates in all the other players for being in a team with those 3 world class and extremely accomplished stars. Add to it having a world class coach. In my opinion Inter Miami still has lots of room for growth even with all these same players. Which means, we haven’t seen yet the best of Messi, Busquets, Jordi, Cremaschi, Campana and others. A special praise to the goalie. In my opinion, we’ll see Callender goal tending in Europe not too far in the future.

A better structure and positioning have certainly been important, but the quality of the players is also critical. After all, Miami was pretty good in the second half of last season under Neville, when they made that run from way down in the standings into the playoffs. The key to that success was the midfield trio of Gregore, Mota, and Pozuelo. After letting Pozuelo go back to Europe in the offseason and then losing the other two to injuries early this year, Neville was left scrambling to find a solution, which he never found.

It will be interesting how this 5-3-2 develops. The team really struggled with it last night in the first half. Plus Messi and Busquets looked exhausted. I think having Mota on the field instead of Taylor was a big drop off. Taylor and Cremashi seem to bring a lot of work rate to the field. Gomez looked a bit wild and reckless last night, but I think he'll get better. Not sure what to think of Farias yet, but we'll see. I felt good about Campana getting a brace as he was put into a sub role during Leagues Cup and also had that last minute awkward moment against Nashville...so it's great to see him spring back with a huge contribution. Good to see both forwards get goals from the run of play.

Excellent !!! Possession without creating CLEAR shot opportunities is the fool's gold of most modern teams (except PL), see recent Barca, etc. if you hold ball too long, opposition has time to camp out/park the bus and breaking it down requires extraordinary movement/passing (Man City) or a long distance shot. Conversely, counterattacks are the bread&butter of most good teams (Liverpool, etc.) and even in Argentina, Inter Miami (recently) because they create CLEAR shot opportunities. 75% of counterattacks result in goals. While 75% of hold/pass/hold/pass/shoot attempts result in no-goals and lethal counterattacks by the opposition. One only need to watch older games (80's) to see how dangerous counters were, needing only 2-3 players sprinting in coordination. The hold, slow movement (standing) of modern tactics doesn't create many goal opportunities, because it is done so far from the goal.

Martino made Martinez an excellent striker, he used to play as winger in Torino and the Venezuelan national team. Martinez won Player of the Season in MLS whilst playing with Newcastle fixture, Almiron. He is an excellent player by any standard. Yedlin also had plenty of PL experience. After watching NevilleBall for the first half of the season, one of the biggest issues the team had in attack was the lack of vision, and therefore lack of runs off the ball. Literally nobody moved off the ball, and in a rare instance when they did, as you pointed out, it usually did more harm than good. The biggest impact I’ve seen so far is that now with Tata, every time busquets or Messi get the ball, there is vision, and the other players put in 110% effort because they trust them to make something happen. It’s like before Messi and busquets, the rest of the team were lazy and didn’t want waste energy to make a run because they knew they wouldn’t get the ball. Now they know their run will be spotted and things will happen.

I't's obviously a bit of everything, but I suppose having Busquets, Alba and Messi, very experienced players, also helps the other players to be more daring to do things they might think risky before, since they might think they have someone else to cover for a mistake more easily, I think the assurance to have those 3 on the team, must help a lot on how they're playing now, compared on how they played before, on top of, as obvious, a new trainer, that of course, maight be better than the one they had, and give more clear indications on what he want the players to do.

It is a combination. Yes all what you say in your video is true. The system did not work before. However you need leadership in the field, you need a player who inspires the rest. Messi has done that. Busquets and alba are so experienced and outstanding at what they do. they complement the tactics really well. Without counting that they played with Messi for years and trained previously under Tata Martino. So they know exactly what and how to do it.

The collective changes were important. But Tata was as important as Messi. Beckham and Co repeated an error from his playing career. That being hiring a European name instead of someone versed in the structure of MLS. When he came to the Galaxy, he used his clout to bring in Ruud Gullit, whose "sexy football" failed miserably. And who never could figure out that even the Galaxy had spending and roster rules. He got canned, and Bruce Arena came in. And if anyone knows MLS, it's Arena. I am the biggest Messi fan, but you are right this resurgence for Miami is not just Messi. In fact Messi is not controlling the game because he does not have a huge amount of touches. He is not controlling the game, and if anyone is, it's Busquets. Alba has improved the left wing dramatically, and has become an offensive weapon. Messi may not be controlling the game through lots of touches, but he is determining the game with surgical strikes, and assists. I also believe every miami player is playing with confidence because of Messi and the Barca reputation. It's like if I were playing with Michael Jordan, I would play with more confidence, and improved play is the result. Besides all of that it just seems like a screen play is being written into an amazing story. The Cincinnati game was just a crazy result, and made it seem like it's fate.

tbh watching last game, they still are figuring things out. Its very difficult for them to move forward, their defense needs to learn to look for forward pushes instead of relying on the back pass every single time.

They got 3/4 crucial matters solved atm. A good GK (commanding and constant), a master CDM (the heart of any team), a scoring forward (Messi and hes so much more). Only a real defence leader, like Virgil Van Dijk 4 example, eludes them still.
