Rich Lo Scotty does try and diagnose stuff, in this video he said he already tried cleaning the maf months ago and it didn't help. Could he have gone in with a multimeter and look at how much volts goes to and from the thing? Yes but he still fixed it, the only other thing that would effect a maf is a dirty air filter and I'm sure he already checked that.

I had a breach in the snorkel tube that caused hard starting but no stall out. The mixture was obviously lean and what I'm leading up to is that the snorkel tube along its length must be AIR TIGHT!!!!! Since parts are scarce, I decided to fill in the gap with duck seal and also duct tape!!! Problem solved!!!!! The breach occurred right at the throttle body!!!!

Definitely use the MAF cleaner... I had an 2008 MINI that threw that code at 90,000 miles and MAF sensors for any car are freakishly expensive if you aren't expecting it. Bought a can that was on sale for $4, reset the computer, and it ran perfectly until I got rid of it at 190,000 miles. Plus.... if you hear someone needs a new MAF sensor, you can toss them the can, save them $80 to $200, and then they'll buy you dinner :p P.S. Don't use carb or brake cleaner... it leaves a permanent film on it and it's ruined forever, even if it's fairly new. Don't ask my dad how he found that fun fact out!
@MrNotorius55009 жыл бұрын
The Curious Noob You sure are right they are expensive as hell, and the kicker is they are nothing more than just simple heating elements which create resistance readings and change the voltage signal going to the PCM, surrounded by a plastic shield and a stainless steel mesh grid. Probably only $40 in materials tops but the manufacturer wants $400 for them.

Leaky fuel pressure regulator that's not holding pressure after shutdown will cause a slow start after sitting. Can usually leave the key on for a few sec can help before starting. A fast start relies on pressurized fuel at the injectors as soon as the key is turned. If it has to prime up it may stall.

Be sure to check the fuel filter too, I often find those things are decades old and neglected even when shops have charged people for replacements on them they haven't actually done(VERY common in franchise shops where the filter is difficult to get to). I do the key 5x on off for 5 seconds prime and crank, if it fires right up then you know you have a fuel rail/filter/pump problem.

***** the problem is especially bad on some Saturn's when dropping the tank is necessary. A whole lot of those cars went to the dealer for service and they charge for the part and the labor but when you take it apart you find it's never been touched. GM was never proud of their Saturn brand and it is very apparent.

So botom line it wasnt the problem, however evey othe car guy had a vid on the Fuel Pressure Regulator that matched my problem exact as when you removed the vacuum line to the Fuel Pressure Regulator gas would sputter out where the vacuume line was, mine sputterd the gas too, problem solved for the additional cost of $52 for the new Fuel Pressure Regulator. devilmastah Well, you won't have any MAF sensors to worry about. You'll have to fall back to fuel/air/spark and problem solve from there. Get ready to do a lot of inspection or take it to the pros.
@JRobert1111119 жыл бұрын
devilmastah If you're talking old cars, well, carb fuel mixure adjustment and overall carb condition can cause a hard start as well as normal tune up issues. However, the biggest contributor to slow starts on old cars would be the dwell adjustment on the points inside the distributor cap. You can dial it in to run, but to have a quick start requires even more dialing in. GM excelled here as there was a little door in the side of the dist. cap which allowed an allen wrench to be used to "fine tune" the dwell (when using dwell meter) while the engine is running. On a Ford, you have to remove the cap and rotor, and keep trying to tune it in with a feeler gauge, and hoping you can get the best results on your dwell meter. A real PITA. So there is a small sample on an "old" car.

Aussie here. I had a 1995 Holden Commodore with Buick derived 3800 V6 and it was probably this that caused the excessive turning over time, though not chronic like this Chev, so did nothing about it.When I had an LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas -known as a propane system in the US) system fitted, it would fire up right away after that and I recall the the gas carb was fitted beyond the MAF inline along the intake pipe!!

Funny, I was about to make a video about my 97 Blazer with the same problem. When it's a cold start up, it'll start up with no problem. Once I turn off the car within a couple of seconds and 4 minutes or so, it'll start up again, no hesitating. However, once the car has been sitting between 15 minutes and 3-4 hours after driving, I have to hold down the switch for 3-4 seconds for it to start. Which is sometimes embarrassing. I should add that when it's cold outside, below 35 degree fahrenheit, I'll always get a check engine light about fuel/air mix ratio. Is that the cause of it not starting properly?
@scottykilmer9 жыл бұрын
could be with that code I'd start there.

I have a 2002 Chevy Express van with a 5.0L. It developed a hard start problem where it wouldn't catch until the second or third turn of the key in the cold morning but would start on the first try all day long after that. So, I had a shop look for any codes and there were none (I now have a code reader) and to check the fuel pressure which turned out to be fine. I did clean the mass air flow sensor to no avail. I did change the air filter which was clogged with dirt but that didn't help. I even went as far as to have the battery checked (it showed 12.73 vdc) and was assured it was fine. On a whim, I changed the three year old two year battery and shazam, no more starting issues!

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with those diagnostic machines. I had an issue with my car a couple years ago and took it to 2 or 3 shops and they couldn't tell me what was wrong with my car another shop didn't even bother looking at anything b/c my car is too old to have that port on it! I finally had to take it to a dealer and pay them over $100 just to CHECK things out....turns out the problem was an easy fix that I could have done at home for about $25!

Thanks for this tip Scotty. Having the same issue up here in cold Michigan however just starting it the first time of the day on a cold morning. No codes have shown on dash and only 6000 miles on a 2017 V8 Tundra. BAFFLED.

The best part about videos is if I need to take my car in for service, I know what to expect and I always ask for the bad part saved. I may need to check out the old part myself!

LoL, I have this problem. My codes are for my knock sensor and it pulled it twice, and also my oxygen sensor. I have been running the car with the bad knock sensor because I heard it's ok to do so, it just runs it rich I guess? Well the other day I had the car sitting for 4 days, went to start it, and it would not start. I reset the computer and pumped the gas furiously while crankin the ignition and it finally started, with a cloud of burned oil smoke! The car is a 98 altima, its a beater, I paid $1k for it, so I'm not too quick to fix and maintain it. I probably should have waited until saturday with this big long comment, but I had to leave this because this is the problem with the car, it cranks too long before starting! Thanks once again for giving away your hard earned trade secrets and making these vids. Live free or die!

heck, on that beater, as long as it starts, live with it. But you could do my video "how to clean fuel injectors on your car" as dirty old ones often do that too

Hey Scotty, I have a '07 Dodge Charger with a 3.5L engine. Ever since I've had it, the car would sometimes take longer than usual to start (roughly 4-5 seconds). I've had it for roughly 5 years now but I'm just so tired of dealing with the issue. No CEL has came on for it-no codes. The only thing that I feel may be tied into this problem is that when I'm at a stop, the engine would shudder a little with the RPM's slightly fluctuating but it doesn't happen as often. I keep up with the maintenance as best as I can. What I've replaced on the car since I'v had it: ALL oxygen sensors, BOTH catalytic converters, alternator, starter, PCV, spark plugs, air filter, water pump, battery, shocks and struts, and timing belt (I know some of things listed or irrelevant but I just wanted to show how serious I am about my car's upkeep :)). I was thinking it might be the camshaft sensor and/or crankshaft sensor but thought I'd ask for your thoughts. Thanks!
