And that is what my guy said as well. Our couches are about 11 years old, but we want to retire them to the basement this summer- after we finish it. We are military so we have moved a ton over the years...but have kept good care of our couches. I'm so greatful that you said the same things my guy said because now I feel like we are making the right decision to replace the cushions. The bones of our couch are good and the fabric (while not top of the line) is still in great condition. Thanks for being such a great resource for me and my thrifty family!

Perfect demonstration Buck! The nugget I got from this is to use a smaller hose end and put the nozzle between the Dacron and the foam. Makes perfect sense. Now I can avoid all the restarts from sucking the plastic in to the nozzle.

This was a great video, very interesting to learn the techniques! I believe my cushions are 7" in height. Would the HR-30 be sufficient for the 7" depth?
@Buckminsterupholstery
@Buckminsterupholstery 7 жыл бұрын
Seven inches is a very thick cushion. This sounds unusual... HR-30 is relatively firm. What is the present height from floor to cushion top? 18"-19" is typical seating height prior to compression. Are you a tall person?
@MsKimJim
@MsKimJim 7 жыл бұрын
Buckminster Upholstery thanks for the heads up. I'll re-evaluate and get thise measurements. I'm not unusually tall either, so I must have measured wrong.
@MsKimJim
@MsKimJim 7 жыл бұрын
Buckminster Upholstery, so the seam to seam depth of my cushions is 5.75", the foam measured about 5.25" in the back where it is less worn. The batting was only covering one side but it 1" batting. I think I'd like to do the standard 3 sided batting covering but not sure which depth of foam to order.
@Buckminsterupholstery
@Buckminsterupholstery 7 жыл бұрын
Usually the boxing is slightly under the foam thickness in order to give the cushion some crown. 4 1/2" boxing = 5" foam. In your case I would use 6" foam. Inspect the seams to make sure they have adequate allowance (1/2"+) Often times factory workers get sloppy with their sewing. Loose woven fabrics can slip apart at the seams when subject to a tight fitting core.

@Buckminsterupholstery
@Buckminsterupholstery 10 жыл бұрын
gstric40 There are many places a person can buy the foam. Wholesalers will require a sales tax ID number in order to do business. Prices can vary drastically according to cushion dimensions and distributor's cost. Shipping is an added factor. In this case the foam was of highest quality and the completed repair was $100 + tax.

Great demo. I wondered how the silk wrap worked. Can it be left in place for outside cushions, perhaps? I’m looking to wrap the current cushion material for my patio chairs to replace the worn out cushions. I’ve got sunbrella fabric already. The cushion material is a bit soft. Could I glue a thin, firmer foam to the existing foam to give it a bit more oomph? The cushions are currently 3-1/4” thick. Better quality seat cushions can be 5-6” thick for a seat? Are there any books on upholstery that you’d recommend?
