How to Fix a Dead USB Port in Windows

For those who don't have the USB option in Regedit: 1.Open Control Panel. 2.Click on Hardware and Sound. 3.Click on Power Options. 4.Under "Preferred plan," click the Change plan settings link for the plan you're currently using. (If you change the settings on the power plan that isn't active, this won't work.) 5.Click the Change advanced power settings link. 6.Expand USB settings. 7.Expand USB selective suspend setting. 8.Select Disabled from the drop-down menu. 9.Click Apply. 10.Click OK.

@@Robertson279 I didn't find it either that way. I did find it however. Go to Control Panel.... Power Options... select Change Plan Settings (to the right of your current plan).... select Change Advanced Power Settings.... choose USB Settings... choose USB Selective Suspend Setting. It will either be Enable or Disable. Click on it to highlight it and open the drop down menu. Now you can change it to whichever you want (in this case you would choose Disable). Click Apply. Click OK and exit all windows. I know your comment was a year ago, but I thought I'd leave this here for any future viewers. 😉

This fixed my tower USB drives. I had power but devices inserted into the USB ports were not being recognized by the computer. I uninstalled in device manager and then scanned for hardware changed and it worked! Thanks!

I had 4 ports in the front of my Lenovo desktop that suddenly stopped working. Restarting, etc. was not going to make them start working either. I had 2 ports in the back that worked so I plugged in my mouse & keyboard (that I had had in the front) there. Followed your video instructions on typing in new key "USB" and then Disable Suspend. My USB ports worked for a long time, but then suddenly ALL 3 stopped working. I tried all of these and it still didn't help :( Edit: I fixed this like a year and a half ago (and I don't even have that laptop), but all you have to do is go to device manager and uninstall all your USB ports, and then reboot windows. Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers

I deleted all of the usb that I found on my device management and kinda had a mini heart attack because I couldn’t use my mouse or keyboard after and had to push my power button to turn off my pc. But it worked once I restarted my pc the usb reinstalled and my usb headphones and Xbox controller started working from my front usb 3.0 on my case again.

And as I was actually able to repeat the process, I'm not very sure It should, but if so, there would be no overload... So that's an oddity, can't really figure it out Maybe that's just the motherboard and too consuming devices being plugged but... A keyboard A wired mouse, and a dongle for wireless An amp (It's using USB only to transfer the data flow) 2 joysticks (not sure they are very consuming) A port is used for the headphones Last one basically for the phone

@@TimurSokol Yes, you need to unplug it, then reboot And try another port for your phone (though… I would not recommend) Just plug it to sector and you’ll be good to go, or just tell the phone to stay for USB file transfer instead of charging 🤗

At the end of the video, you are suggesting usb hub. But if all the usb ports of a laptop are damaged physically, then we can't use usb hub. Is ithere some sort of adapter like vga port usb port adapter? I have asus laptop, it has 2 usb ports and both are damaged physically because of inserting pen drive the wrong way.

If you have a PCMCIA slot, you could get a USB3.0 adaptor card. Sadly, if all your laptop has is literally USB ports and display port, then no, you cant add more ports.

Sounds like a hardware problem, either a short circuit in your keyboard (spilled something in it?) or not enough voltage being supplied to the ports. Have you tried the keybaord on another device?

I have issues in relevance to this video, but the brokenusb ports aren't in my pc, there in a speedshot ultimate (keyboard and mouse adapter). Last night they were working fine, but i had an xbox one controller charging on a venom charger (xbox one docking station) whilst plugged into a usb port to the adapter, so i think the issue revolves around that. Now none of the 3 usb ports are responsive, however the LED's still come on on the device. I've opened up the adapter to look for physical damage just incase but there are zero physical signs of damage. I also toubleshooted the device twice in my PC, and it says that it can no longer support USB 3.0. Any advice at all would be really appreciated.

Hi, I have a dead usb port which its on my laptop, this usb is in a USB+SDCARD pcb conected through a flex to the mother board (already changed the flex), the voltage for the usb is 0.28v but the sd card works perfectly, and some times I got the error message "power surge on the usb port" and already tried all the fixes for this error... the pcb looks ok with no sign of shortcircuit or any phisical damage.

Hi something very odd is happening with the USB port where I connect the USB flash drive. Everytime I connect it the notebook can't find it for some reason then I turn the notebook up on the right side and the flash drive gets recognize but if I lower the notebook on the normal side, it will not recognize it again. what is going on? Type "Front panel PCI USB ports" and see what can be done to add USB ports to your PC. Chances are you have a PCI slot to conveniently do so.

All but 1 of my usb ports on my acer nitro 5 laptop are damaged physically, the one closest to the screen is missing the chip thing completely, the other one on the same side has a missing chip thing but its metal prong plate things got mangled when my dad had his foot on the cord for my mouse and i stood up, they might be disconnected from the motherboard but that wouldn't matter because they are trashed anyway

sounds like a windows usb driver issue, have you tried booting in . safe mode or done an install repair? I believe you need a windows 10 install dvd/usb stick nowadays for that...

I have same issue. But can't log in because safe mode requires use of keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work perfectly in repair mode. Then all go dead at log in.

Very likely - it iether shorted out a circuit by pushing the connections around, or shifted the entire motherboard and ripped away from the power port perhaps. It's difficult to tell without actually taking it apart. Might be an easy fix, but you'd need to get it opened up.

when something mysteriously stops working, it usually means windows update has broken it. try downloading and reinstalling the official drivers. even if you don't remember windows updating, it does it silently in the background.

Well i had i cooler for my laptop , at a time,cooler wire has broken...i changed the wire.....that wire has broken too! After that i didn't repair it again, i used a mouse on a usb. I wanted to play on my keyboard so when i pluged the keyboard it wans't working! I changed the usb location,it worked...i tried all of these options, but none of them worked...i had to change the usb! Have you tried inserting a bootable USB stick, to see if it's recognised by your BIOS? If even that doesn't work, it'll be a hardware issue, possibly not user serviceable. If you can get into a live linux boot USB, you may find it's just windows that's messed up.

Re-install drivers. If nothing appears, the drive is dead dead. Hardware issue.
