How to fix a hissing toilet. Two causes.

This video saved me such a headache. I was about to go to bed when I heard a nonstop hissing from the master toilet. I cannot sleep with a noise like that and didn’t want to wake up my husband. So I found this video and had it fixed and silent in ten minutes.

Thanks for posting this. My toilet been hissing for a while now. I was going to either get a plumber in or try to replace the whole inlet myself. I tried to the first tip, dismantling the top valve to clear it of debris, and there was a piece of plastic stuck in it. I think you can imagine the joyful frustration I felt when my tank not only filled up, but stopped flowing. My house is silent again.

Saved me from losing my mind. I hate noises at night and the first one did the trick! Literally a small pebble on top, preventing the valve from shutting off. Threw it away, flushed out more dang rocks and got my toilet working again. THANKS JENSEN!

Sometimes a combination of debris & high water pressure causes what you are describing. You may want to check your water pressure as well. I have a video on how to lower water pressure. Thanks for watching!

@@Takingtheredeye Glad the video helped! After a water line is hit the toilet is usually the first fixture used once the line is repaired so it gets most of the debris. Faucet aerators are another common spot for debris to gather.

To anyone afraid of pulling out the white rubber gasket / filter at the bottom of the fill valve tube - I removed this and it solved the hissing noise. On the next fill, there was a bunch of debris in the tank. Seems like there was a backlog around the rubber gasket. Thanks Jensen! 🎉

Thanks for showing that flow limiter, I was was puzzled why my toilet was filling so slow after I replaced the flush valve , I thought maybe the shut off had a restriction. I removed the flow limiter and it and it was slightly blocked, I just left it out, works great now. Thanks again

This worked for me! THANKS! One thing, getting that cap off was a hassle. I found using a finger or thumb in that front opening to pull upwards popped it off. Mine absolutely would not come off pulling the side tabs. Once the cap was off it was literally 3 or 4 minutes to clean and flush and it is fixed. Thanks so much for making this video, saved me time and money!

Some caps are definitely more difficult to remove than others. I’m glad the video helped!

there's actually no need to take the cap off. just lift the float arm up and twist. it comes off and goes on just like he showed, just wtih the cap attached. taking the cap off only makes it easier to line up the grooves and drop it in place without whiggling it a bit to find the grooves because you can see the mating

This video worked for me. After flushing out i still had the hiss so i took off the black cap and turned the water back on slowly. It started to squirt upward through the black valve seal, so i removed it, bought another valve seal, and the hissing stopped after putting it back together. Thank you for the tutorial!

It could be the flow restrictor but l have seen debris in new fill valves as well. Sometimes when the water gets turned off & on a bit of debris from in the shut off valve gets lodged in fill valve.

so to remove the flow restrictor, you would have to remove the entire fill valve? or do you remove the restrictor while it's still inside the toilet, kind of pulling it out w the needle nose without being able to see...?

You can usually grab the restrictor with needle nose pliers while the fill valve is still in place even if you cannot see it. You could try using a small inspection mirror to see if there is a restrictor in place.

Omg that hissing was driving me nuts and was intermittent and after squeezing between the toilet and the wall and replacing other parts and FINALLY getting all the parts and the bidet screwed back together and NOT leaking, I was not looking forward to doing half of it all again just to replace this!
