I've been DIYing for 40 years and done a fair number of basins. I've never heard of the three part waste seal before. I've always used Plumber's Mait which has always worked after some cussing. Today was different. Nothing I had previously done worked. Worse I had three wastes to do around the house (failed pop-up wastes). I picked the kits up locally and you're right, they worked first time. You've saved me hours of frustration and cussing. My sincere thanks!

Not aware if this kit until yesterday when I saw on your excelent video, bought this morning from nearby counter that Fixes Screws at GBP2.19, worth every penny. Fitted a few hours ago, brilliant. How much hassel this kit has saved. No o-ring or washer between the waste and the basin just loads of gone off putty. Used plastic washer that was originally between the nut and the basin. Did use a smear of silicone gease on the thread, the Back Rubber Seal cone, on both sides of the washer between the waste & the basin and in the face of the nut, could not help myself, it's what i always do. Thank you for your video. To help others plumbing is Imperial, Central Heating can be metric. The 1-1/4 inch is the i/d - bore - not the o/d - outside diameter.

Struggled desperately yesterday with a new waste and accompanying washer parts, plumbers mait and PTFE tape. The waste would not sit central, kept spinning with no proper seal and what a mess. Grabbed the simple kit you recommended from a local plumbers and the job was done in 15 minutes! It doesn't have to specifically be a 'Thomas Dudley Ltd' Waste Seal Kit - just ask for a 3 piece Waste Seal Kit which cost me £3.49p. This time no unnecessary Plumbers Mait, PTFE nor silicone sealant and I managed a perfectly clean job, where the waste will be easy to remove to replace in the future if needed. Thank you so, so much for such a useful video! 😃👌👍

Great tutorial, very clear and precise. I’d never heard of the part before and after taking the u-bend off a couple of times and tightening etc, I thought I’m going to have to use silicone. Saw this video and couldn’t believe the part cost me £2.50 and worked a treat! Brilliant, thank you so much 👍

Dear DIY Guy, our bathroom sink waste pipe started leaking this morning. My partner has been trying to solve the leak all afternoon. I found your video and showed it to him. Initially, he was in denial and said it wouldn't work (lol) despite all the positive comments below. After hours of struggling...and more struggling...he finally asked to see the video again. I rang Screwfix to check that the local store where we live had the part in stock. I also asked my partner to buy Plumber's Mait (just in case) because there were a number of people below that said your solution didn't work for them. Finally at 6.30pm....it worked! No more leaking waste pipe! And no need for the Plumbers Mait! THANK YOU so very much for your video. You're a star

What a find man. Been fitting basins for years, most with no problems but occasionally this particular problem which lots of cussing and sealant usually solves. This piece of kit is a game changer. Used in a problem waste today and bingo. Problem solved. Will have these in my van from now on and will fit as standard on all basins. No point doing otherwise.

Thanks, you just saved my bacon. End of the day, filled up my newly installed basin, all good, taps working fine, no leaks in pipework. Opened the pop-up waste and water was running round the threads, so grabbed a bucket. Tightened up the pop-up waste nut, but that only made things worse. Removed the waste, and on closer inspection, it is clearly a rubbish design (designed to leak). Admittedly, PTFE tape may (probably would) have solved this, but I can't help thinking the pop-up waste should include the conical seal by default. Ordered one and collecting it first thing in the morning. I hope this donation buys you a pint. Great channel. Keep up the good work.

@@TheDIYGuy1 Sadly, this gadget didn't work for me. I nipped up the nut gently, but there weren't enough threads left to connect the waste pipe. I tightened it to reveal just enough threads, and fitted the waste pipe. I still had a leak around the threads. Chucked the conical gadget in the bin, and used PTFE tape. All sorted now. Anyway, the donation still stands :-) It was a good idea, and a great channel. I think the conical seal would be better if it wasn't so deep, and was threaded (mine wasn't). That way, nipping up the nut would compress the threads and make a seal.

Same for me, the seal will not fit right up and into the hole. Got a slight leak on it so will have to take apart and try again. It seems that the black seal is just a bit too hard and could do with being a bit softer so that it is more pliable and can be manipulated into the hole and around the waste thread. Disappointed 🙁

Dudley diagram shows foam washer replaces existing washer under waste in sink, however in my mind the main seal between cone and thread is the most important as water can come down overflow and the rubber cone seals the whole arrangement. Simple but efficient 😀
@Gloucesterx

Agreed in the Dudley diagram the white foam washer sits on top, but I also replaced the slotted waste at the same time using a 32mm flowmasta kit which has a new clear washer, so kept the foam one underneath as a spare.

Just fitted one of these and like the video no plumbing putty or silicone needed. Decided to fit new waste unit and trap while I was at it. New basin waste unit £13.99, seal kit £2.99, new trap £8.90 from screwfix so £20 the lot. Hardest part of the job was removing all the old silicon down to the basin ceramic and the boss underneath . When fitting the new waste unit ensure the slot (if slotted) aligns with the basin overflow hole. I found it difficult to get the rubber unit to the top of the thread and into the sink boss orifice as I have arthritic hands but managed it eventually. Impotant to get the rubber seal fully home with no play and the slotted unit down on its seal in the basin. As I had bought a new slotted waste unit I used the washer supplied with it between the waste flange and basin so fitted it all as shown in the video. No leaks, also fill the sink above the overflow hole to ensure the slotted waste is aligned and the overflow water drains. Thanks DIY man for the video much appreciated.

You don’t need one on a bath waste because the overflow pipe enters below the grating.It’s really only wash hand basins I suppose someone should have by now engineered a wash hand basin is designed like a bath or kitchen sink it would be easier to construct as well with no well.

Also, is there a tool that is double pronged to put through the waste, to prevent the waste spinning so that the overflow holes stay aligned? I've done a couple by sticking a screwdriver through one hole, but I find I don't get the secure grip I would like with that method. Cheers.

You put the foam washer between the black rubber 'bung' and the nylon seating... It's supposed to go inside the basin between the waste unit and the basin. Though I think most people chuck them and use a bead of sanitary silicone.

Main issue I've found with this kit recently is that a lot of basins seem to have smaller openings so the black rubber seal doesn't actually fit up inside it. Regardless of how much you try and push it up and tighten it's 50/50 if it will leak or not.
