Nice fix. Most of it was Greek to me but I really appreciate your problem solving and determination in getting the job done. I do know that the best lessons are learnt by doing.

Much of it was Greek to me too Dee! But I was happy to sort it out eventually 😊👍

Capacitors have impedance so can act as a component in a potential divider. True, moreso in ac…. I’m going to show my A level students this in the UK. Useful for them to know as we move onto the topic of potential dividers. Thanks as always.

You have to be happy with that. I had a little laugh, when you said that the voltage went up to 11.

Great save Chris, and excellent video. Although the obvious solution was to replace the blown tantalum, think of the knowledge you have gained trying to figure this out. Learning is never wasted. I think you were right about the dead short inside the tantalum too. It makes sense why the voltage dropped across the output. Cheers NN

I watch a bunch of electronic repairs in the hopes of learning how circuits work. I have picked up tidbits, but my brain completely shuts down when diagrams come out. Its like a foreign language, i try to understand it but my brain just isn't ready for it. Thanks for sharing.

I bet Ewaste Ben would have a spare tantrum capacitor or two, Chris. I don't know much about electronics, I would have just changed the part and then re-test it. Interesting you showing all the parts and testing them. Lol cheers Graham.

Thanks Graham. If I had of had a suitable tantalum cap here I would have just swapped it straight away! But I didn't - and I didn't want to just order one without making sure everything else in the circuit was ok.

Really interesting fix! Kudos for digging in and drawing a schematic, a super-important step that I struggle to do 😆 My only tip would be to watch out for the distinction between uF (microfarad) and pF (picofarad) on capacitors. Hopefully you're right that it doesn't matter much here, but could cause trouble in other circuits. I don't have a good answer for what the output cap was doing, but if there was a boost circuit it may have been part of that, I think they work with oscillations that get smoothed out. Hopefully someone who understands it can educate us!

If you are considering cleaning the dial face, here's a quick suggestion. Most of the grime is oil from the fingers moving the dial hands. Basically, it is dirt. Here's the recommendation: First, ensure that the face is not paper or pliable material. Take a small cup of water 8oz. Drop a dental cleaning tablet in the water. let it dissolve. Take a clean, small brush. Stir up the mixture. brush the solution on the dial face. this will remove the oil and grime from the face. wipe clean with a soft cloth.

The capacitor was leaking to ground, if you checked the cap out of circuit then you would have noticed that the capacitor value would have not been stable or even not have been in the range that it was supposed to be (example 100pf would be 30pf to 70pf shorting down ground) alter the smoothing. You dont normally put electrolitic capacitor on the output of a power circuit, this cap is for output smoothing from the LM317T regulator.

A capacitor tries to match and stabilize your voltage - you can use the Capacitors as a Voltage Doubler if your Transformer Voltage is too small then you can reduce that Voltage down to a Voltage you can use.
