I do like the hinge idea. Don't have a torch but a HD hinge. May replace the hinge pin with a longer bolt and thread tht thru the hole. I do have a heavy strap hinge. Wonder if lag one end to post and cable to free end for full tension thru 180 degrees to open in or out

Wondering why the cable needs to go ABOVE the gate. Couldn't it go from the top gate hinge to the lower corner?

You certainly could do that. However, I tried did that before, and unless you cable both sides, or reinforce the opposite side with a diagonal board the gate will want to twist. That is why I moved my cable to the top. Thanks for a great question.

Wonder what would happen if you attached the cable to the bottom rail of the gate and the hinge/turnbuckle just above the top rail on the post side to hide the cable...?

LOL. I actually had it like that for years. And it did square and lift the gate, for a while. The hinges were pretty stressed after a while though. And unfortunately, being that the cable was on just one side of the gate, it eventually put a pretty harsh twist in the gate itself. So, that's why I did it like this, this time. Haha. We'll see how long this works. But the wood is starting to go, so I'm not expecting many more years from it. Thanks for writing!

Or attach the top of the suspension cable to the top of the gate closest to the post & top gate hinge & the bottom of the suspension cable to the bottom corner of the gate opposite of where the hinges are. Not sure I explained it clear, but the suspension cable top attachment is attached to the gate top corner closest to the top hinge and the bottom is attached to the bottom corner of the gate on the opposite side of the hinges… Why is that so hard to explain? Both ends of the cable are attached to the gate.
