The O Ring on our shower diverter valve plunger decided to come off of it's seating and get lodged down in the valve itself.
Needed to remove the diverter valve and remove the o ring that was stuck in the valve itself and replace with a new o ring.

I'm doing almost the same fix - older Waltec assembly OEM 76305 found at local plumbing parts store. The little grommet disintegrated and pieces showed up in the strainer leading to the tub. The replacement parts package included the plunger, a spring, a tiny O-ring and washer... all of it. I'm not a plumber and I have never seen this particular part before, and misunderstood how water flows inside the brass housing with this plunger in action, so I believed it wasn't going back in far enough. Thank you for your video, it's the first one I found that shows how simple the reassembly appears to be.

thank you! the new moen waltec diverter they sell at home depot is missing this piece! i couldn't figure out why it wasn't working and kept pulling the o-ring into the valve past the seal point until i watched this video. I returned it and bought an older version at which has the proper washer on it, fixed the problem!

Of the 100s of diverter fix videos on the internet, yours seems to be the only one with no set screw. I hope you can help me! :) Finally found how to unscrew it, nearly had to rip it out of the wall as the last of the threads didn't want to release. Plunger action seems ok O ring and shelved ring (flew out of hole when I pulled hard on diverter) look fine. Am soaking to hole thing in vinegar in case some crud is in the mechanism.

@@LUCAMTire one last question, should the piston mechanism be greasy? like up past the inner o-ring?

@tallard666 I do not believe it should be greasy no unless it is consiled inside the casing where the water flow will not touch it. As this water that touches the valve will be coming out of your tap and your not looking for contaminated water

Oooo sorry I thought you were reffering to something else. There should be 3 seals on the diverter valve. Are all 3 seals in place? Follow this link to a display picture of a divertor valve. 2 black o rings and on this one the middle seal is white. Are all in place? @nonamebleach should be able to as long as the water valves (taps) are turned off.

One exception - mine is a single larger piece of chrome with spout, and to get it off - I think - I needed to remove the hot & cold valves first. For sure needed to remove the strainer in the middle. It was close - it's possible that the holding rings surrounding the valves might actually come off with valves in place. I wish I had tried that first. Anyway, I found shutoffs nearby and it's all good.
