Biggest problem I have where I deal with over 300 of these in the park I work in, Is the brass screws that break off inside of the stem when trying to replace the seals. packing nuts can just be tightened up to stop leaks from below the handles most times.

Since you've got the stem out, take the handle off and remove the packing nut and seal, then some careful torch work to heat the washer end of the stem can help- before you break the screw, that is... Once the washer starts smoking, yank it out to reduce smoke. I usually put some silicone grease on those washer retaining screws when reassembling...may help postpone corrosion, may not.

As someone else mentioned, up north we have a lot of frost-free valves, Woodford and Prier seem to be the two most popular. I’ve always just bought the kits as needed but since going full time this might be something worth keeping on hand.

If they come off, most of mine do, then I repair. I don't waste time fighting a packing nut, I just replace the whole bibb if that's the case. Most of the time they just need a new washer without risking a shoddy plumbing job at the elbow inches away.

Very useful and practical content presented very clearly! The last time I was asked to replace a hose bib I thought I was going to break the copper pipe that the hose bib was threaded to (even with a backup wrench). I didn't have the know-how or the parts to repair it. I had to throw in the towel on the job and not make any money on it. Now I plan to get the parts needed for repairing them. When the fix is to replace the washer or the O-ring, do you automatically do the other too?
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
Typically yes, I do that for most jobs. If I already have something opened up and all it needs is an extra minute or two and 12 cents worth of parts, I'll go ahead and take care of both at the same time.

I can't believe you just wasted a brand-new vacuum breaker. 😀 I worked in a factory where they make millions of similar compression valves, and what you call vacuum breakers. (We call them check valves). Anti-backflow is very important in case the water main pressure drops for any reason, like someone opening a fire hydrant up the street, and nobody should NOT want to have one on their hose bibs, as well as their supply line. Great video.

You might want to remind people to always have the stem backed away from the seat when screwing the bonnet in or out, so the coarse drive threads on the stem don't work against the finer bonnet threads.

You're right, I should have mentioned that. I actually have that in my written instructions but I didn't cover it in the video.

Excellent video with great details! Also, I really appreciate your approach to the business side of being a handyman (kits & processes)! I'm stuck with a vacuum breaker that looks identical to the old one on your sample hose bib, including the rusted set screw. How can I back out that screw to remove the old vacuum breaker (it's leaking)? Thanks!
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
Technically you can drill them out, but you'll likely damage the threads for the hose. If I need to remove a leaky vacuum breaker then I just replace the entire hose bib.
@decastring

@@bulletproofhandyman Well, darn. I was trying to avoid replacing it for the very reason you stated in the video. It's stubbed out of a stuccoed wall and I've been afraid of breaking the pipe inside the wall.
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
If you can't get a backup wrench on it, then you can still try to drill it out. The metal that the set screw is made out of is pretty cheap metal so it's easy to drill through, you just have to be careful not to destroy the threads of the spigot.

I'm hearing a lot about your hose bibs up north since I posted that video. It makes me want to order some to do a video comparing them and showing a similar breakdown of how it's put together.
@michaelmolter8828
@michaelmolter8828 3 ай бұрын
@@bulletproofhandyman Yea, ours are quite a bit different in shape, but have the same parts. The idea is that the valve is in the warm side of the spigot be that deep underground or through a wall, and a handle on a long shaft connects a the handle to the valve. After the valve shuts, all the water in the cold side that's suseptible to freezing drains out. Only real difference is we think a lot about sloping spigots so they do drain. They still get blown up all the time, because if you catch an unexpected hard freeze over night and didn't disconnect your hose, they don't drain and freeze.

Thank you. Is it best practice to just replace both or all 3 including the Teflon gasket if we are already there? I’m sure the customer would be disappointed if a couple weeks later the valve starts leaking somewhere else. Also, once the vacuum breaker set screw breaks off how do we remove an old one? Drill it out?
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
I drilled a few out when I first started, but now I just go ahead and replace the whole valve. It's pretty rare that you can drill it out without damaging the threads.

If the vacuum breaker leaks, do you have to replace the entire bib since the set screw is set?
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
That's right, at least that's my policy. You can drill the screw out but you'll nick the threads on the bibb.

How can remove that vacuum breaker to replace when they go bad and leak under pressure
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
The only way to remove it is to drill out the set screw. Doing that is likely going to damage the threads and you'll end up replacing the hose bibb so typically if I need to replace the vacuum breaker then I just replaced the entire hose bibb.

I have seen an old plumber who used some other methods it was a while ago about 1983 he had a leak on a hose bib and used lamp wick on the stem threads to resolve a leak under the packing nut. He used a drill to remove a frozen screw in the end of the stem the water had corroded the steel screw threads welding them together. He once used a seat reamer for cleaning up the scored seat caused by over tightened stem and crushed washers are these still viable methods for repair or do you replace the hose bib rather than put in that level of effort/ time?
@bulletproofhandyman
@bulletproofhandyman 3 ай бұрын
I wouldn't do any repairs to the body or stem given how affordable they are to replace. If the repairs I showed in my video don't get the job done then I would replace the whole thing.
