Water Supply Valve Replacement
Then with Rib Joint Pliers or an adjustable open-end wrench unscrew the water supply hose from the bottom of the toilet's fill valve shank. Now place one open-end adjustable wrench on the compression nut while placing the second wrench on the water supply valve itself. Once in position hold the water supply valve in place with one wrench while turning to loosen the compression nut with the second wrench. Once the compression nut is loose turn it by hand and remove the valve from the water pipe. When the old valve is removed the compression nut and ring will remain attached to the water supply line. These parts should be reused on the new water supply valve if they are in good condition. However, if corroded or otherwise damaged they will have to be cut off and replaced.
Expect water to drain out of the pipe when the valve is removed so prepare to quickly switch valves. The water can be collected in a small bin that has been placed beneath the valve before removal. The new valve, which was made ready, needs to be fully inserted into the water pipe and aligned vertically. Screw the compression nut onto the water supply valve hand tight. Then take the two open-ended adjustable wrenches and tighten the compression nut onto the water supply valve until it is tight. Be careful not damage the valve, however, it must be tight or it will leak. The water supply valve outlet should be vertical when it is installed correctly. Keep in mind not to force the water supply into a vertical position when the lock nut is tight because this may cause a leak to the water pipe joint behind the wall.
With the water supply valve firmly in place, attach the toilet tank hose to the water supply valve and tighten it carefully. Then attach the water supply hose to the fill valve's shank and tighten a quarter turn past hand tight.
With the water supply valve in the off position turn on the water main to the house. Return to the toilet and check for water leaks at the water valve connection, if there are none, turn on the water supply valve. With the water supply valve on the toilet's tank will begin to fill. Inspect the overall assembly for leaks and tighten accordingly. Once the tank has filled replace the lid and the task is complete.

Very easy to follow instructions. I was a little nervous completing this job, but felt more at ease by having purchased a couple of extra parts in case I had the wrong size (extra supply hose, second 1/4 turn valve at a different size). At the end of the job, I placed a couple paper towels down in the area, just in case I couldn't see any leaks. All was fine, no leaks. Thank you!

Good video. Why do they mount the damn things flush to the wall? If you have to crank too hard, you can break a solder joint or unscrew steel pipe behind the wall.

Hi, i recently tried to install a bidet and when i was done with installation, i tried to turn the water supply valve back on. However, i dont see the water filling in tank or any sound of water flowing through the valve. I think I accidentally damaged the water supply valve. You should have explained there are flanges on the inside of the escutcheon rings that have to be bent in to secure them to the copper tubing.

if i replace just the hose that goes from valve to toilet..do i still need to shut off the water(handle on valve)..or is just shutting off the main suffiecient enough?i think i need a new hose its leaks from the top part..probally rubber went bad.

It's a Dremel tool with a metal cutting attachment. Amazon has them as well as any hardware store.

does it matter what kind of valve I replace it with a cheap Veil vs. and expensive when one that you have to turn several times to stop the water or one that only requires a quarter twist? Also is a replacement valve that uses a compression fitting better than soldering it? And if I use a compression fitting and it feels in the future would I be able to cut that ring off and swap over to soldering or some other form? I just don't want to do any more damage to the system. And I'm rather new at this.

You shouldn't have to turn the water off to the house. Just the toilet. And Darin it. Grab a bucket, for excess water, then replace it.

I'm getting ready to tackle this project but the quarter turn valve doesn't completely turn off the flow of water. The tank fills back up with water after I tried to sponge it all out. So now I have to shut it off at the curb while I replace the valve.

Hmmm...if the home owner is paying for a plumber to replace the valve, why not take off the old ferrel. And do the whole job??? Why re use the old nut, thats just stupidity waiting to happen. You must be some kind of DIY'er or a handyman. Obviously you've forgotten a few steps.
