How to Fix a VW Door Lock Module PERMANENTLY

Hi BMACVAGS here again. In This video we fix the problematic VW door lock module which is and its well known failures. Symptoms include, doors not locking, central locking failures, interior light malfunction, alarm faults and many more. These faults are developed by the shock fractures in the solder from the continuous opening and closing of the doors. Great video. Just too much hard work... ;-) I opted to just get a replacement door lock from Ebay for £22 and it did the trick. Saved all the hassle of of opening up and repairing the original (2007) unit.

Thanks for the video, I just repaired my Porsche Boxster module which is almost identical. My problem was a cracked solder joint on the PCB. If I had to change the switch I would not open the module, just cut the wires and solder in the wires from the new switch (or use but connectors).

When you unsolder, consider using a 'solder wick" (braided copper ribbon) or a "solder sucker" which is a spring loaded plunger which creates a vacuum to suck up the solder. Also remember that solder flows toward a hotter area.

Thank you for the video. On your soldering make sure the wire then the pcb pad is hot. If the solder joint is dull instead of shinny, it is probably a "cold" solder joint, heat the joint again.

A little contact cleaner on all the other microswitches that you didn't replace is also a good idea. I've had one of these modules fail on me because one of these switches got stuck closed, and since it's a load of work to get to these modules, better be safe than sorry..

+Hiya Pal Thanx for the reply. I had a look at the circuit board but all the solders appeared whole so I went to the wreckers. They only had one complete unit with the window motor. That bitter pill was £50 but the dealer wanted £750 + parts so I guess I came away light. Everything works like a dream now. I replaced a rotten radiator at the same time. Whew.. what a job. One day to take it all apart and a day to put it all together again. Awesome ride though. No regrets.

I bought two micro switches from you left and right, I have 25th anniversary MK4 golf and the microswiches didn't fit the two holes they are different sizes so I had to drill all of that to get the microswitch to fit, Also, I used superglue and it ran down the switch and glued the actual microswitch so I WOULDNT recommend using superglue, I did however manage to get it all working as I stripped both switches down and used some internals from the left switch to fix the right switch and then I glued it in with araldite, which is much thicker and stronger bond. Waited 1 hour and put it all back. All good now. Thanks

First of all, use less solder, it will produce a cold solder because of the mass. Second, replace or at least check the other microswitches. Mine where dead and that was the problem with the alarm, so i open them up, clean them with some alcohol and voila, there back to life. I can make a video with 3 door modules i bought, all with the same problem.

At position 2:10 mins of your video you show removing a retaining clip that holds the micro switch onto the lock body. This clip was not present on my lock, the ends of the plastic pins were molten and flattened, I have done the same with the replacement micro switch using a soldering iron. There wasn't much plastic protruding though and I hope it holds.

Thanks, once again an informative video. I think this might be what's wrong with my passenger side lock. The driver's side (rhd) doesn't lock or unlock every time with the fob but you can hear the locking mechanism actuate. It's like the actuator is going far enough. Any clues? It will lock and unlock ok using the key.

I have a golf mk5 that will not unlock from keyfob but will lock. Its four door. The key in drivers only unlocks drivers door, and if twisted to the right twice it still wont unlock the other doors. Does this sound like the fix in your video will cure it? If so does it mean I have four door lock actuators to remove to change the microswitch on each of them? Thanks James

You will end up opening it again to clean the inside of the electric motor..very common fault..so this is not so permanent :)

Hi all! I have an audi a4 b7 2.0tdi (140) which iven owned for a few months. Great car but ive noticed that when I start the car in the morning when the engine is cold the car shakes quiet badly whilst cranking then the starter catches the flywheel and it starts with a puff of white/blueish smoke then everythings fine. strangely enough if i start the car let it run for a minute but not fully warm then start it again it still shakes whilst cranking and keeps starting this way untill the car has reached 75-90'c. Once its reached that temperature when i turn it off and start its perfect no shaking whatsover. Now i dont think this car was regularly serviced as the fuel filter was really dirty as was the air filter so i changed them both a while ago made a difference to the pick up but still have the starting issue. Then I thought it could be the glowplugs so had it scanned with vagcom and two of the glowplugs where at fault. changed all four hoping it would fix the problem but it was still the same. Now when i changed the old fuel filter i poured out the diesel that was in it into a glass jar and it looked like there was oil floating at the bottom of it so thinking maybe the fuel is contaminated with oil, tandem pump? I ran liqui moly through the injectors and the moly that was returning from the engine was nearly black very dirty so dont know if its just soot from the injectors or not. Im thinking maybe valve stem seals but would the initial start not clear the oil straight away and wouldnt affect subsequent starting? It definately seems to be temperature related. There seems to be some blow by from the oil filler cap smoking and what not. dont know if the two are related tho. As ive said no drive-ability problems just the starting. Holy too much solder, batman... A lot of people just beef up the cracked solder joints and this solves their problem without having to change the micro switch. If that doesn't work, then I'd say replace it.

The problem is that when I unlock the car the right rear door does not want to open up I have to open it in from I have tried to turn the child lock but they do not help. GUYS clean THE MOTOR (ACTUATOR) WITH wd40 ...the comutator and brushes are full of old brush dust and the RESISTANCE SHOULD BE BELOW 10ohms ....clean it with needle wd 40 until wd40 liquid coming out of motor is clean..that also fixes dead lock issue

why not use the solder wick braided wire to de-solder and suck out the solder out of the board socket without fear of damaging the board? its pretty cheap stuff I used to desolder and change out all the GM pots for the 2004 Yukon speedometer and gauges. speeds up the repair and ensure new solder fills the joint. and keeps temps lower on the board. (my pardon - im repeating minnesnowtan's advice - Yeah, do that..)!

Nice video! I have a question. I have a Golf mk4 1.6 16v, Im having problems with gear shifting. Its hard sometimes to shift in first or reverse. What could be the problem? Other problem is that when I shift gears car responds very hard (its hard to explain). It's jerking a little when shifting and I have to be in very small rev range to smoothly shift. My college has 1.6 8v and he says that hes car shifts smoother.

Nice update to the first door lock module video you made. I already sourced out a few of the same microswitches for the mechanical lock (for cheaper than you have, however they took three to four months to arrive!). The ones you have are an exact replacement vs the similar, stock switch part I found. I'll have to use small bolts to attach mine, and possibly drill new holes to do so. Did you consider melting the plastic pegs, like how they do with the original switch, instead of super-gluing it?

I watched this trying to get some clues about my sudden door locking problem. (Just to mention that, if anybody can help, here's the gist of it. The problem is with the driver door. I suddenly found a situation where the driver door was unlocked when all doors were supposed to be locked. After running through trying things, the basic simplified summary is that when the driver door is supposed to lock, it unlocks, and when it's supposed to be unlocked, it locks. The result it that I can't lock the car. Extra note- the key cylinder is broken so I also can't do anything with the key. After running through the possible conditions, I realized this. I could lock all doors with the fob, which then leaves the driver door unlocked because of the mystery malfunction. Because pressing the unlock button on the fob once will unlock the driver door only, and it now works backward, pressing that once will lock the door. But because of the annoying programming of the car, so that, if you unlock the driver door, and then don't start the car within a minute or something, it goes "oh, you've unlocked your door and wandered away and forgotten it, I will 'help' by relocking!", it will then send a signal to relock the driver door... which, now, unlocks it (and still arms the alarm). But... SOLDERING! Around 5:00 you solder on the wires of the new switch. You say "my soldering isn't perfect". No. Sorry. It's just WRONG. It's TERRIBLE, JUST PLAIN AWFUL. You can watch the video and see plainly and clearly the solder frosting over making a cold joint, with a blob of solder sitting on the pad, not flowed across the PCB pad and bonding. It seems you're a pretty handy mechanic, and you should get much credit and thanks for doing this video and others to help people out. The video is overall very nicely done, people can see what's going on clearly, etc... But please find somebody local in person and learn to solder, and if you're watching and have never learned how to solder properly, IGNORE THAT PART and find somebody to teach you properly. Not a KZbin video, either. That's a whole topic. There are obvious clues right in front of you. Look at all the other solder connections on the board. First, notice how shiny and smooth they look. Next, notice how the solder on the connection sort of smoothly tapers from the end of the wire sticking through down to the circuit board pad where it is being connected, tapering out to almost horizontal as it flows down and out across the pad all the way to the edge of the pad, because the solder is flowing properly and bonding to the work. ("The work", to spell this out, being the bits being soldered together- the wire and the pad on the circuit board.) Then look at the rounded crusty blobs you made. NO! The ugly irony is that all this work, the bulk of it being the ugliness of the task of getting the module out of the door and reinstalled, is because of an electrical failure. It's a process that obviously you don't want to need to do again, ever, if you can avoid it, and the soldering job here practically guarantees another failure of the same kind- a failure of the function of this switch, except the failure would not actually be a switch failure, but its connection to the board going bad because of a solder connection failure (which, to make it worse, would probably be intermittent, making the resulting problem and diagnosis of the problem a real nightmare). Sorry, but this one is so bad I can't let it go and let unsuspecting people be misled by that. You reminded me of a friend, an old retired master mechanic, a great, extremely knowledgeable and skilled and experience auto and truck mechanic, who I watched do some electrical repair one day, and was horrified that when he got to soldering something, he had no idea what the hell he was doing. That's you. Sorry! Aside from that pretty serious problem, nice job.

If your fob can lock but not unlock, try replacing the fob battery bc that is a sign of a failing fob battery. I changed my battery and it worked.

So, when you say "permanent"; are you saying this because you replaced the microswitch? That is the only difference; in this video vs. your other one? I guess; as long as the solder joints don't crack again and the switch doesn't fail again, it will last longer?
