Thank you kind sir. Very clear and helpful. I do have a question though. In my case. I have an Ibanez TMB-100. Just a begginer bass and I've been attempted to get a good set up on it. My low E string can't be made any longer at the saddle but it's still sharp at the 12th fret. I've tryied 100 and 105 gage strings but they even the thicker string is still flat at 12th fret while in tune open. Any idea how I could work around this?

Did you ever get a work around for this? If it's only a little sharp, you could remove the string, and take the spring off that strings saddle to give you a little more room to work with.

One thing nobody seems to mention is the starting position of the saddle when putting on the new strings? Regardless of whatever a particular saddle/screw may have previously been adjusted to for old strings, before you put on a new set/or single backup, should you re-adjust the saddle/screw to a preferred starting spot before re-stringing?
@goldmidwest10 ай бұрын
So I'm not a professional luthier or tech or anything (although I am a professional player & teacher fwiw) but, I'd bet you a nickel that the short answer to your question is "no" but the long answer is: if you're re-stringing your bass with the same gauge of strings - and if your bass held good intonation before - that you would probably want to leave each string's saddle where it was. I mean in practical terms, it wouldn't even really matter if you did or not *before* the new strings were on, because you're going to be checking it *after* they're on, for sure.
@mikechecka29210 ай бұрын
As long as youre not changing the gauge of your strings you shouldnt need to adjust anything. Even if you change gauges it will likely be easier and quicker to re-string and make small adjustmemts after rather than moving all your saddles only to have to move them all again once the strings are on.

I feel stupid, but when you tightened the screw on the a string shouldn't that make the scale length shorter and the tone even sharper?
@RinkevanW Жыл бұрын
When you tighten the screw, it will PULL the saddle closer to the bridge (end of the bass) , thus making the scale length longer :) If you loosen the screw, the saddle will be pushed away from the bridge since you're releasing tension from it, and thus shortening the scale length.

I'm a little confused on trying to figure out how to fix the buzzing that's coming from my strings, at first i thought it was the frets being unlevel with each other but then it might be the intonation cause it only buzzes when pushing down on certain parts of the fret.
@thebassbench56782 жыл бұрын
Have you checked the neck relief? Hold the string down at the 1st and 12th fret at the same time and then look at how much space there is between the strings and the 5-6th fret. If they are touching or very close that might be the issue.
@thatguylego76672 жыл бұрын
@@thebassbench5678 there is very little, to no space in between the frets and the string When doing this. Would this mean it's a truss rod problem?

@E_MZ_7 ай бұрын
I’m kind of confused as to why you loosened the already flat string and tightened the sharp string. Isn’t that counter productive. Does anyone know?
@aaronfordfishАй бұрын
Loosening makes the string length shorter (raises pitch) and tightening makes the string length longer (lowers pitch).
@E_MZ_Ай бұрын
@@aaronfordfish that’s literally the opposite of how it works. I play every single day. Loosening the knob lowers the pitch.
@aaronfordfishАй бұрын
@@E_MZ_ Yes loosening the intonation screw on a string initially lowers the pitch but when the string is then retuned to the correct pitch with the tuner, the note fretted at 12th fret will now be higher pitched. Repeat until open string and 12th fretted note are both in tune.
@aaronfordfishАй бұрын
Yes it's confusing, loosening lowers the pitch since the string tension is reduced. But when retuning the now shorter string to correct pitch, the note at the 12th fret will be higher than it was before.

@adityabali19392 жыл бұрын
Same problem here
@leandrofod2 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna point out some question that might help you figure out, and they are ordered in how much you are gonna spend to fix them: TL;dr: if you don't wanna bother with DIY adjustments and fixes just seek help from a luthier and hear what he has to say. I would at least try the solutions for step 1 and 3 before taking it to a luthiery. I'm not a luthier btw, I'm just an enthusiast that likes to study and do things on my own instruments. Here we go then. 1. How is the string action? If it's too high and you have to pull down the strings too much, that can affect the length of the "string pull" towards the fretboard to the point it's out of the intonation "sweet spot" Solution: adjust truss rod tension and the saddles height. 2. How is the neck nut looking? If it's too worn it can affect the string pull just like the problem mentioned before. Solution: you can try some MacGyver stuff and fill the crack or hole present there but the outcome is mostly random, with luck AND if this is actually your problem, it might do the trick. I would just replace it if it's too old, by a professional (IMO), but maybe you can just buy a new neck nut and replace your old one if you have knowledge and/or balls to do so by yourself. 3. Are your strings new? Old strings lose consistency on mass throughout the length of their body and that can massively affect intonation. Solution: quite obvious. 4. For how long have you been playing on this very bass guitar? Worn frets along the neck have inconsistent intonation (compared to one another) as the height on the string pull towards the fretboard differs way more than it should naturally. Solution: just like Q2, if you detect that that's the problem and you wanna fixing it by yourself, then go ahead. I paid for a luthier to replace the frets on my old chinese guitar (not a dogshit guitar tho, kinda decent one) and it still cost me the same price I paid for the entire guitar new from the shop 5 years earlier. You can buy the materials and probably do it on your own, if you wanna bother. Another possibility: if it's from a cheap brand, maybe the frets' height could be incorrect and ruining the intonation by disrupting the string pull. 5. Is it a from a cheap brand? Maybe it's simply built wrong and the bridge placement is "not ideal" and doesn't match the needed dimensions, as it was probably never meant to be professionally adjusted anyways. Solution: this is harsh. I would just give up and seek for professional help. He might have to drill new holes to find a new placement for the bridge. Depending on the price of the job and the price of your bass, you could just go and buy a new one (that you know doesn't have that problem, by testing it maybe or probably reporting to the seller this issue that you had in the past).
