NOTE: There are two styles of resister part - One for heating systems with automatic controls (as in this tutorial) and one for the models with manual controls. They are not interchangeable. And the prices are WAY different - $35 vs $105. Text lookup under "Blower Motor Resistor" at your local auto parts store but make sure you get the right one for your type of heating system. Also, this video doesn't show the re-assembly, which is not straight forward. None of the current replacement parts are a plug-and-play replacement - they all needed some splicing. Instead of a built in pig-tail plug to the fan and a female plug for the control console wire plug, (with the thin purple line) my replacement unit had a 5-line female plug on the body and came with a snap-on pig tail that had the 2-line connector to the fan, and 3 bare wires (red, black, and purple) that I had to splice onto the existing 3-wire line from the control console. I used quick splice connectors - the thick wires used the blue size, and the purple used a red size. A PITA when working under the dash with the door open on a cold winter afternoon, but not all that difficult. Never-the-less, once all wired up, it solved the problem. Thanks for the video NNKH!

I just replaced the resistor on my 2004 Buick Rainier, with the climate control system. I worked perfectly for one day. I’m not going to spend anymore money on it. I will just use a 40amp fuse and a 40amp switch to straight wire the fan to FULL ON. All this technology is great if you got loads of money to keep it going. But, honestly, old school is the best.

@MJS.283 жыл бұрын
Thanks for vid. Fyi when people measure the purple from red youll see the voltage fluctuate. That lets you know the pulsed width modulation is working coming from the climate controller, therefore its your blower resistor module like he said in the video.
@rlvtrader8 ай бұрын
Thanks for this. Mine was fluctuating and not at 0 (just near it). When I increased the fan speed on the controller to max, the voltage was over 12V between these 2 wires, which made me think climate controller was doing what it was supposed to do. I'm going to buy the resistor module, fingers crossed that totally fixes it.
@MyLifeThai3712 жыл бұрын
I did the permanent fix for it my blower motor turning off and on intermmitently on my 2003 Silverado. I bought an "add a circuit." I bought the 30 amp one. I pulled the 30 amp fuse out in the cab for the heater/AC hvac system and plugged in the add a circuit that has 2, 30 amp fuses in it with a pig tail coming out of it. I connected 8 ft of 14 gauge electrical wire to it with a butt connector. I ran the other end to the blower motor on the passenger side of the cab. I cut the pig tail off of the blower motor(the blower motor just has 2 wires coming out of it. A red and a black wire. I connected it to the red wire. The black wire on the blower motor I connected an eyelet to it and connected it to one of the glove box hinge screws which was a good ground. I cut the 8 ft piece of wire right above the transfer case shifter and installed a toggle switch from walmart. Now I can turn my blower motor off and on with that toggle switch. I only have high fan speed, but I don't care.

So, what if you replaced both the resistor and the hvac control unit, and the blower motor still runs full speed. My current issues are .. Blower motor keeps runing with key off. ( replaced resistor ) Replaced hvac control unit. Just a little unclear. My key is out of the ignition and it keeps blowing. When I do what you showed on the video (key still out) it stops. But when I plug it back in (key still out) it turns on again. Would that be the climate control module? Sorry I know I should be able to figure it out but I’m not the best when it comes to cars
@NoNonsenseKnowHow4 жыл бұрын
More than likely it is the blower module. That is by far the most common failure. But the way to verify would be check if the purple wire coming from your climate control head harnedd has a ground or not. When the blower is turned off there should not be any ground on the purple wire. If there is then you have a bad climate control head.
