How to Fix Broken Bumpers on Elite Series 2 Xbox Controller (2024 FIX!)

EDIT: there are wires in the controller on the left side. If you’re opening with a knife, be careful not to cut those. Comments suggest buying a tool on Amazon.
UPDATE: August 2023, I have had to redo this process one time since making the video, but my controller is still working fine as of writing this. Hope it works for all of you too!

Update: March 20, 2023 This still does work even though at first I thought it didn’t work. After putting rubbing alcohol on the bumper, I clicked on it multiple times as said but my LB was still not working properly. I’m using it after like 6 hours and now it works perfectly. If it doesn’t work at first, relax and let the rubbing alcohol fully dry. Hope this helps

The warranty expired a week before my bumper stopped working. I was losing my mind trying to basically punch it to get it to work. Finally decided to try to fix it myself with this video. I used 70%, pressed RB for like 5 minutes and sprayed some canned air on it and pressed it for another couple minutes. Instantly works. Thank you

For what it’s worth, you may want to check if your credit card has “extended warranty coverage.” More cards offer it these days, and it offers a sort of warranty coverage for 1 year beyond manufacturer warranty (technically they just reimburse you when you replace it). I usually find a use for it once a year.

Just did this on an elite 2 that had a left bumper that wouldn’t register about 30% of the time. I haven’t tested it extensively yet, but at the moment it appears to have completely fixed the problem. Thanks for the video!

I had the same exact issue out of nowhere, same bumper too, I tried putting paper under the plastic part to thicken it a little, didn't do a thing, then I did this like a couple of times in a row and it was making my lb stuck, but after like 30 minutes the button is like brand new and I can continue air rolling in rocket league, thank god!

Holy cow this helped so much! I ended up folding the plastic trifold so there would be a bit more leverage for the bumper to lift entirely off the button itself. Now I can ping to a location in apex without saying I spotted an enemy 😂

Just tried this, fixed my elite controller! 🙌 Left bumper was completely out, barely worked even on hard presses. Cleaned w iso heavily & blew out some dog hair with a duster. Works perfectly now! Also killed some minor stick drift I had by dripping a few drops of isopropyl under the joystick, there’s a little box directly under the joysticks. A few drops and spins of the joysticks and no more drift!

Great video. Just a tip for anyone else who has tried this fix and it DID NOT work, there are tiny brackets just under the boxes connected to the white buttons that sometimes get bent down. I had to use a butter knife to gently push up on the bottom of the box and it fixed it. Again, this is for those of us who can’t fix it with the alcohol.

The iFixit tool kit came in handy here, I have seen people do this and leave pry marks on the plastic. This worked well though, my son's controller button wasnt working and works again after following these steps. Thank you. You just saved us from buying a new controller.

It’s almost always my LB but it’s my RB now 😭 Edit: just did this and it worked, I used 70% alcohol & air from a can to dry it and kept clicking and adjusting the plastic piece, to the point of just taking it out and once it was taken out (I had taken the plastic piece out and put it back in a few times) the controller works fine now ! Also kept clicking the button like suggested in the video and after adjusting the plastic piece and realizing it just needed to come out after about 5 mins of trouble shooting, the controller seems to work like new without the plastic piece!! 😎 thx (to anyone trying to fix the controller just keep adjusting for a lil bit and trying with and without the plastic piece, good luck !

Yeah this happened to me when I was playing overwatch the thing is I didn’t have to clean it my rb button was like 1 millimeter out of place and I had to press it with a bit of force for it to work I didn’t even figure it out until I reopened it and took a closer look and I seen that it was very slightly out of place so I gently put a flat head screwdriver under the button and pushed it up

@@GA-ky3lj I just cleaned it and test that everything was moving well. Then waited for alcohol to dry before turning it on. I removed the little plastic sleeves with some tweezers, cleaned with the rubbing alcohol, hit the button a few times to make sure the solution was getting in and sounded good. Turned it upside down hoping it would help drain any excess liquid, I think I took a dry q-tip or paper towel to get any extra solution out and waited to dry before I turned anything on. The faceplate just clips back on. I think I broke one of the tabs taking it off, but still feels solid back together. Sorry for the long reply. I remember I had a lot of anxiety doing the repair, but it ended up working well.

@@mat.b. Not necessarily, it’s worth a shot though if you already plan on opening it up if you don’t have warranty on it. Just clean with 90%+ alcohol after pulling out the analog and let it dry completely before powering up. I would watch a video on it before winging it though. But it fixed my bumper issues for sure, still no issues with that.

Followed this video for pretty much a brand new controller only used once ! Worked a treat I found taking out the plastic made it work better…. Top trick if you like to overuse cleaning solution, and it causes uncontrollable clicks, blow really hard at the bumper component and you’ll get a face full of the solution 😂

@@MonkPain I did have to do it a couple times. You should put the alcohol on and let it dry and then do it again. That's what I had to do. It worked for a bit and then stopped again. So I did it like two or three times before putting the controller back together and I haven't had an issues with it again

Awesome video, made opening the controller very easy! I used an old smallish-kitchen knife with blue tape over the edge of the blade. My controller didn’t become completely fixed by the alcohol alone, seems the switch wore out. WHAT WORKED was stuffing a small piece of cotton swab under the bumper (in the largest opening there) to provide a little extra spring to lift the bumper. The failure to press seemed to occur when the button wasn’t fully released, despite the tactile click of the release occurring.

BEST GUIDE EVER! THANK YOU! I've had this issue for years and the old youtube guides would say how to re-fold the plastic or put other objects in there, but no one said using alcohol! So what I did was use some contact cleaner I had laying around for other electronics and it FIXED IT IMMEDIATELY! I cant believe this whole time the issue was a dirty switch and not something physical as other guides suggested. Thank you so much, I nearly bought a new controller out of frustration.

This worked perfectly for me! My problem bumper was on the right. I did replace the plastic piece after cleaning. Warning: I broke one of the small tabs while taking the face off, and it took me a minute to shake out the broken piece, but it was unnoticeable when I snapped the face back on at the end

This worked! Was having the problem where the button press didn't do anything or you'd have to press extra hard. It came on slow at first but got terrible. Opening it up, and hitting it with alcohol did the trick. When I opened it up, I could see the problem button, where it hits the actual little white button / actuator, the white button would depress at an angle. After the alcohol, it pressed in straight like the others and worked fine. It's mad easy to take the cover off. Just don't put your tool in too deep on the right side near the A button, there are some small wires.

April 2024 here, was having inconsistent clicks with my left bumper, followed this video and it’s working perfectly again 🤙🏻 only thing is I used a plastic pry tool instead of a knife LOL

I’ve done this fix four times now lmao PS, if you have a paddle not working, have confirmed that the paddle is the issue by swapping it to the opposite side, you can just put a tiny tiny bit of glue on the nub on the back to extend it. I had to press mine super hard and now it presses so easily that I actually press it too soon sometimes. It’s lovely.

Thanks for the content. What I liked was showing how to open the controller as well. Just done it to mine and did RB while I was in there. My LB is spot on now
