I like it when you start with a very simple classification of the problem, too much air or not enough gas. But it's experience, knowing that on that engine the intake gaskets fail, that allows you to jump right to a definitive test. It's why the more challenging problems are more educational, since the veteran can't take shortcuts.

This helped ALOT ! My car was showing a P0171, So I jumped into youtube and saw this same clip, ran back to my car, did the spray cleaner test while the car was runing and indeed it afected the Idle and behavior of the engine while running. Now after, observing colsely, in my case , it wasnt exactly the mainfol gasked that was leaking in the air. It was acctualy the injector seal that wasn,t doing its job (i have a 2.3l ford escape2006 and the injectors are on the front of the head), and a replacement of the dount shaped little plastic pices made all of the difference. similar to what you demostrated here but slightly diferent area hat was not sealing properly. any way it was trough this test that i found what was happening to the car, so thanks Scotty.

Scotty, a few things, is it important to disconnect any electrical lines? I've seen demonstrations of this where people disconnect as many things as they can and others where they disconnect as little as possible. Do you need to disconnect the negative battery line after the job is done to reset the computer to take off the warning light or will that disappear on its own after awhile?

I had to do this on our 2002 Windstar. Just a tip to those of you who may attempt this - this video is exactly what you do, except if your intake has a coolant passage or two (you can tell by the coolant color around the hole), you must change the oil and filter before you crank the engine. Otherwise, you'll have some coolant in the crankcase which will destroy your engine bearings. As always, this is an awesome Scotty tip though -- those gaskets are cheap but paying a shop to do this simple task can cost a ton!

GREAT VIDEO THANKS! When you put the gasket on before you replaced the manifold, how did you assure it stayed in place while you turned it over to reinstall it? My luck it will fall off or not seat right. Just wondering if it will just stick there in the groves or if i will need to put some kind of sticky gasket sealant or something to hold it in place? Thanks again!

Scotty, I have a 1999 Ford Taurus with 100k miles. It has the 3.0 Duratec V6 and has had a P0171 & P0174 code for the last year. I have replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, fuel pressure regulator, pcv valve and elbow, multiple vacuum lines, fuel injector O-Rings, upper and lower intake gaskets, mass air flow sensor, and all 4 Oxygen sensors were replaced today. Fortunately the car runs like a top but still has a P0174 code. I don’t want to get rid of the car because I don’t want a payment. My mechanic does a great job and doesn’t charge much so what do you recommend?

Perfect, this was served up to me, after I cleaned my MAF sensor for the third time. I suspected it could be air cleaner (but cleaned that twice) or vac leak, but couldn't find anything. Now I have a backup plan if this last cleaning doesn't do, I've been hesitant to buy new MAF but others say they do go bad (just unlikely for Toyota). If the light returns (or might anyway) can of carb cleaner is ready. Thanks!

I'm having this issue with my 2007 Toyota Camry. I'm hoping that my issue is the gasket because I'm excited to try this DIY and finally get my car back on the road. Next is figuring out if my AC has a leak (I hope that's all it is) so that I can get it fixed and not have to take it to the shop where they'd have to remove the entire dash. Oh and I don't have a lot of tools so if you could tell me which sized tools you used that would be great.

Scotty, how can I try this on a 2011 Chevy Malibu 2.4L? The way it is designed is that the engine cover is part of the air intake system and so if I take the cover off to reveal the intake manifold, the throttle body is completely exposed, is that safe to do or will it cause problems?

Great tip about spraying carb cleaner by gasket and listen for idle change! Probably an old trick but new to me, like using cheap cigar for vacuum leaks or spraying water on running belts to isolate noise..hehe I'd swap the throttle body nitrile gasket...my toyo one was well shrunk/rotted after 12 years.& likely leaking coolant into air intake..just for added fun!

So I have a 2009 GMC Sierra and it only throws a P0174 Lean in Bank 2. I’ve ran fuel injector conditioner (Lucas) as it says on the bottle every time I get gas till I empty the bottle. I’ve done that twice and if I quit and fill up a few times without Lucas and eventually my service engine light would reappear. The truck does have a Volant cold air intake just to add. Could I get your opinion on what you think I should do. I just poured a whole can of sea foam in the gas tank and filled it up today.

Hi Scotty, I have an 01 Toyota Celica with codes P0171, P0301 - P0304. These codes have been hanging around since I bought the car. I thought that I would be able to fix it without too much trouble. Boy was I wrong! The previous owner said that he changed the MAF twice but problem persisted. I changed the intake manifold gasket, spark plugs, and air filter. Car really bogs down when accelerating. Per live data on diagnostic tool, O2 sensor and MAF appear to be at least functioning, really don't know what readings to expect. Tested output of MAF with Volt-meter. Appears to be changing with RPM. Problem may have gotten a bit worse when I added fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank. Was considering connecting a hose from another car's fuel line to the injectors on the Celica, however, I can't figure out where to connect and disconnect fuel lines on the Celica. I have a fuel pressure gauge but cannot find a way to hook it up. I am out of bullets. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dale P.S. I have a question Scotty, I have a 2005 honda accord lx sedan 2.4l it keeps getting the p0171 and p0139 code I have changed the o2 sensor, the air intake hose from the engine to the air box, spark plugs, mass airflow sensor, pcv valve, and some other thing related to it doesn't hesitate on acceleration at least I haven't noticed . I was wonder what advice you could give me because I have been trying to get these codes to go away and just can't seem to get them to. I will check the intake manifold gasket when it starts to warm up a little bit.

Nice video. I had this same code and could never detect an air leak. After replacing manifold gasket and MAF sensor, I had to ask a shop to check the fuel injectors. One was partially blocked! Do you know any easy DIY approach to detecting fuel blockage to an injector?

check the spark plugs, blocked plugs would run leaner and hotter than others and be a whiter color.

Hey Scotty, I have a 2010 Honda Fit sport that is running the P0171 code with a check engine light. I recently put a k&n cold air intake on the car. Should I get rid of the cold air intake? If not than how would I fix this issue?

I have a 2009 suzuki sx4 sport and a code p0171 is on and i already changed the intake manifold gaskets and mass air flow sensor. I look and sprayed everywhere to see if there is a leak somewhere else nothing. The check engine light is still on. Any idea what it could be?

Hey Scotty, I have a problem with my car and I think it might be this! I have a 1999 Lexus ES300 V6 and the Front bank is definitely leaking because there is some oil buildup coming from the top of the engine. The engine codes are many, including misfiring on all front bank cylinders, the P0171 code, P0441, and P0136. The fuel filter needs replacing. I already picked up an OEM filter and will do that next. My question is, do you think a head gasket leak could be causing all these trouble codes? The car has 172k on it and I'd like to make it last since it still drives reasonably well!

Scotty, I have this code intermittently but no power loss per se. We have noticed that we think the gas mileage has gone down, and I just found a hole in our Muffler. Could that be related? a mechanic replaced the MAF but I'm not so sure it was even bad.

Scotty. I have a 96 Accord, Automatic, horn stop working some time ago. Don't heard any clicking sound from a relay, that its supposed to be on the driver side.I have another issue that is, got some "diesel" sound at the very start. The car idles at 1500RPM, perhaps more. Then, 5 minutes after, it goes down to, 800-700, a bit slow IMHO, the engine shakes very little. this iddling improves after taking the car for a ride, it feels smother. The last question is, havin 205.000K, from a only a one owner, will this car turn into a problem soon or I can use it without worrying by now. The car is automatic, autos are so rare here, I;m a bit frigthned about this gearbox going bad. Final information, no check engine light. Thanks Very much Scotty. Love you channel. Saludos y un Abrazo.

Its sad because here nobody rebuild autos, that's the point. Here are almost manual. Scotty, the horn issue, have you got any clue ?/ I use the horn a ton. Its a shame since the car in pristine shape and its nice, but is likely to be a paperweigth. Any chance of doing this car MANUAL instead of an near impossible rebuild. Gearbox shifts nice, and fluid is clean, red color. The car has been well manteined, but I don;t want a problem, well, I got one now I think.

Ok but what if u have bank 1 and 2 system too lean. I've fixed the maf sensor. Fuel filter. Air filter. Cleaned iacv. Still idles low usually when I stop it wants to drop down to about 400rpm then goes back to 725rpm

Hi scotty, I have a 2006 Subaru Wrx Sti, the turbo went im pretty sure, it is rattling when boosting. Along with that popped up this exact code. Could it be related to the issue or is it a completely different issue. By the way there is no smoke clouds so I think the seals have not gone bad yet on the turbo.

@frankderuiter811
@frankderuiter811 8 жыл бұрын
+RBM569 Are you shure your turbo rattles? The sealing of the oil is the first to go. There is a big chance that it is caused by your exhaust (manifold or down pipe). Another possibility is that your engine starts detonating. That would also explain why your car is complaining that it is running lean.

I used everything...smoke, carb cleaner, gas, hell I even went to the trouble of buying a tactrix cable and software and learned how to tune(perfect excuse I wanted to get my hands into tuning without being yelled at by my wife) trough the tune fixed the problem i was still hearing that whistle sound so I used common sense since you cant see air i got a scope and found out that the pcv valve hose was loose, makes sense since oil wears rubber out, so i could have solved the issue with a 75 cents clamp but i got ahead and put an oil catch can (another excuse) runned some cleaners, re-tuned the car and now i am making money tuning Honda fan boys modifications and got a perfect smooth running car!

Hey Scotty, awesome video! Quick question about a 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo. When you start the car in warmer weather (60 degrees plus), the car has a hard time starting and takes a couple cranks. But in colder weather, it starts like a champ. The car throws no codes, could it be a CSI? Thanks

Hey Scotty, will a bad oxygen sensor cause p0171, too? I did the maf replacement, feel pressure seem fine, sparkplug replaced, no leak that I can find. It's a 2000 corolla. I'm afraid that the acetone might be eating the fuel system up on a side note.

it can, but normally the sensor just feeds back to the computer that such a problem exists, not the thing that creates the problem. On those most often a leaking intake manifold gasket

I recently replaced my intake manifold gasket on my 02 Celica. Although I don't have the check engine light or P0171, I can still hear hissing around the intake manifold area. The sounds like it's sucking air whenever I step on the gas. I only have a drop-in K and N air filter.

Hey Scotty, I'm having some car issues that are intermittent. I have a 2005 Ford Ranger 3.0 L v6. The other day my truck did something that didn't make sense. I was driving it and it seemed like it was getting power half of the time, then no power at all. It would cause my car to jerk violently while driving. I was able to make it to the mechanic immediately (one that I usually take it to). This same engine code, p0171 came up and they replaced my spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, and the MAF. They also smoked my vacuum lines to check for a vacuum leak. There wasn't one. I got my car back and it seemed to run fine for a couple weeks. Then all of a sudden, I took my truck on the highway at higher speeds. After about 20 minutes it started jerking again, but this time my truck completely died on the side of the road. It's in the shop yet again and the mechanics are puzzled right now. I'm not really sure what to do about this since every mechanic I talked to seems puzzled. Do you know what this could possibly be?

I should also mention that it idles fine. Nothing wrong with the idle. They said I may or may not need new fuel injectors, but that can be an expensive job and I wouldn't want to go through with that and it ends up being that it still wasn't my fuel injectors.
