Good tip Mike! One thing I always avoided was chicken winging, because I have heard many people got injured that way. It's not worth the risk.

Chicken-winging is an intuitive response to there being inadequate strength/power to do the movement properly. So you need to learn how to fail constructively. If you're not strong enough for BW, use bands to regress load to the point where you can do 6 or 7 good reps. Then do a set to reasonable reasonable failure where your whole goal is to not be able to complete the last rep. And force yourself to just fall back into the negative phase of the movement symmetrically. This will be a lot easier to work with if the load allows you to do a few good reps then get tired and fail, as opposed to having the completion of just one rep as a big performance event - that's too much load.

Just use an appropriate load for your strength/power level, and learn to bail out of the last rep by falling into the negative phase of the movement.

Another easy solution if you chicken wing muscle up, which is kipping half muscle ups, but keep your legs as straight as possible, and try not to kip a lot, don't move your legs so much and aim for high reps (if you're a beginner then it's absolutely necessary to kip even bending your legs is fine, progress when you're ready, you'll know it)
