I work on the helpdesk, I tell people to turn it off and turn it on a lot. I had one lady turn off her monitor and then turn it back on. She said it didn't work within a few seconds I was like computer won't boot up that quickly. Told her to turn off the computer she said the hard drive (facepalm) I said yes she turned it off and then said how long do I leave it off for, told her a few seconds is good. She turned it on and it worked.

Definitely the easiest fix...wouldn't you agree? This had to be said, there had to be a video for this in the help desk series. There's so many people in the field and outside of the field that do not understand this one important fix.

Funny you mentioned this... Netflix has a show called IT Crowd from the UK. The IT people say the exact same thing when they get calls. It' s a funny show. The show reminded me when you talked about it.

you didn't explain WHY this works; It's because the PC goes through it's POST (power on self test) procedure everytime it is turned on. It checks the keyboard / display / cpu etc is there and working, and resets certain processes. I always explain this to users who say "Uh, coulda done that meself." Yeah but you didn't.

Im studying IT in college, so I get all sorts of family related phone calls about tech. My dad calls me almost daily about tech stuff. Hes the picturesque "boomer". One day he called me about his gps malfunctioning on his phone. Turning it off and turning it back on fixed it. The volume button on my end saved me from his rantings about how stupid technology is. It was a win - win. XD

Hi, is IT helpdesk mostly on calls? Or you gonna help the agents face to face to fix the computer?
@Itcareerquestions5 жыл бұрын
That's always determined by the business. I would say as a whole it's probably 50/50.

I am of the belief that if users are calling the help desk before performing simple troubleshoot steps is the fault of the help desk. Training is so important for these users and they should at least be able to perform simple self help steps.

It's okay if its not a recurring problem. Of course if it is a recurring problem, further investigation is needed.

It works because it discharges the capacitors. I guess in the circuit they act as a roadblock, but you clear their charge and free up the flow.

Brian H A server reboot.Quite possibly yeah. Especially when the service being run on said server is down and it needs to be back up quick. You can always do root cause analysis later.
