We are $300 dollars in on getting my German shepherds ear fixed…she got it drained was in a cone for 1 week then took her in, they removed tub and cone. Another 65 dollars for antibiotics. And still her whole ear filled up with blood. I have been draining it for days then came across this video! I’ll keep her taped up and see if it works 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Thank you so much for this! One of my boys (Frenchy) got knocked around and ended up with ‘the ear’. We couldn’t do the drainage ourselves (tried and failed) so that was a task for the vet. Once home, fashioned a tube/splint and applied it without issue. Your video makes it very clear, surprised the vet said it wasn’t necessary.

Thank you so much for sharing this informative video on how to drain a hematoma. It was incredibly helpful! I do have an important question that I'd love to get some insights on. From the research I've conducted, it seems that there's a possibility of the hematoma recurring. Was this the case for you? If you could share your experience, or if anyone else reading this could provide their personal findings on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you again for taking the time to post this valuable video!

@auriuman78

@@paulherrero272, hi there. I was not able to get the splint to work, but I did end up getting an ear wrap to secure her ears flat to her head. Unfortunately for her it meant having to Lance/drain her ear twice 😔 She didn't like the wrap at first but she adjusted pretty quick. I've also been administering topical tea tree oil on the ear (10 drops tt / 2 tbsp evoo) and turmeric standardized curcumin supplement (100mg/10lb), both once a day. This is working well and she's healing up OK. It's taking time but it's working 😊 The tea tree is for prevention of ear infections while healing and the turmeric supplement is for inflammation. Both were advised by a homeopathic DVM. If you choose to go the turmeric route, make sure it's a standardized curcuminoid extract with a black pepper additive, piperine. Just getting the kitchen spice won't guarantee the strength to be enough to work, and the pepper additive helps absorption and metabolism of the turmeric.

I am so sorry to hear that. My babies ear has started to get hard. And I just did the method yesterday. I lost my job a couple months back and already have my banked over drafted to the max or I would have taken him to the vet immediately. However, my jib job involves training time and not getting paid for the first half of the training. They will pay you once you proven that you want the job and that you can do the job. It's a job I have wanted for SO long. Anyway, I just wanted to give the back story on why some people just don't go straight to the vet. He is an older dog and has a lot of medical issues. And we were keeping up with him. Until now and this thing. That's what I am hoping to prevent him from going completely deaf in his ear. And I don't know if I'm a bad furless mom for not giving him up or finding a way. But the guilt is there and will ALWAYS be there. I just pray that what I am doing is right. And as soon as I get my first check, in August, he is going to the Vet. I don't care if his ear is fixed or not he is going to get a check up

His ear was fully engorged just before the ear met the ear canal. Needless to say it ended up a successful damn bloody mess!!! Looked like a murder scene from the series Dexter! Which is kind of scary and ironic! My dogs name is Dexter!!!Taped the splint on fairly snugly and wrapped his ear flap face up with an ace bandage. I can’t thank you enough for your friendly advice in this video! You allowed me to bring peace back to my overgrown fur baby and my self! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!! Dexter sends kisses as well! Just a question though... how long would you recommend leaving the split in place? I know I should replace the bandage daily though... You saved us a lot of money that we didn’t have! Thank you again!!! You made a simple procedure anxiety free.. well LESS so at least!

Unfortunately, this did not work for me, My dog just shakes the home made splint off n matter how tight I tape it. May work for smaller dog but not for my female pit bull. The ear just keeps filling up again with blood.

I hope someone can help. I followed this protocol and didn’t wrap the ear enough around the splint so the hematoma filled back up. I removed the splint and drained it again and of course splinted it again with a much better tape job. Still the bubble filled where it could. So again I performed the draining, and retaped the entire area on the splint. Now the bubble seems to be forming above the tape (toward the ear canal). At this point I’m leaving the splint as is, I have 2 more days according to whoever said to leave on for 3 days. I could really use advice! Thank you!

I had the splint on for 3 days straight (after 4 days prior of draining 4 days in a row and re-splinting) and I just removed it. It stinks like clams and it’s so sore he went nuts as I was trying to unwind the tape. I’m so sad for him and frustrated! He an Australian Shepherd but his ears kindof remind me of floppy lab ears. All I can think is to just let it be for a while. Also seems to be filling right back up again. He’s so sore! Advice please??

Pendant ears can be laid down against the side of head and bandaged to stay. Be careful using a stretchy bandage to not cut off air supply or ability to eat and drink.

@@auralsplint I’m beside myself because the ear was severely affected by the 3 days in the splint and tape. The edges of his poor ear have lost hair and are still super crusty. There is a space where a chunk literally came out! And the smell when I took the tape off! There is also still a hematoma, smaller but it’s there. I don’t know what to do because I can’t tape anymore, it will destroy his ear! I do not trust doctors, and I do not want them to cut his ear open or put him under anesthesia! At a total loss!

I sure would not be telling people this. it is a very involved procedure. I went to the emergency room. They put 8 draining tubes in my cat's ear. $1,600, one fell out and the dr said its ok. on no, it filled back up with blood so i hade to do the whole operation again with my dr, another $650, plus meds and sedation. for two weeks with a crown. So the first was a waste of money. Please dont tell people they can do this on their own. THis def needs medical attention with antibiotics. This other dr used coat buttons to hold each vein in so blood would not fill

When draining the ear do you put the needle on the skin side or cartilage side? What is the best way to numb the area of the ear?
@LoveMyPups

For me, the hematoma has always been on the backside of the ear so you’re gonna put the syringe needle in at the base of the ear where the bulge is on the backside don’t need to numb it but just use alcohol to clean the area

@LoveMyPups fab, thank you. Tried on my girl last night, but she got really stressed, so we didn't want to do too much. I think part of the reason is we didn't leave the needle in so it could drain. We had it drained at the vet's 2 weeks ago and cost me over £120 😭

It cut the inside a little and seem to have gotten infected so can’t keep it on now I even sanded the highlighter tub so it was nice and smooth. Don’t know what to do now 🤦🏻‍♀️. Any suggestions for how to prevent the head shaking? My dog is a boxer and his giant head and force he uses when he shakes bc of the annoyance of anything on the ear is partially the cause of the refilling.. I tried a splint like you showed, but I think it was too small and the diameter not wide enough to keep the ear tightly pressed up, so I’ll try again w something bigger. I think I’ll have to take him to refrain it first 🫠

@@Javabirdnaturw To be honest with you for me there is no point going to the veterinary clinic because they gonna drain dog ears and 2 days later you have to come back and they need to do this again and again and again ( of course they try to convince you that the best solution is the surgery, my dog cannot go under anesthesia so I refused) you pay like $200 for a freaking drain that is crazy, so I read that you can wait until it heals naturally, yeah my dog has cauliflower ears now but he's not getting hematoma again. Still have problems with itchy ears because of fungus but I try to keep them clean. I bought Ear cleaner liquid that fights with fungus and I clean his ears 2-3 days a week and I use Clotrimazole 1% cream.( both cleaner and cream I bought on Amazon very cheap compared to greedy veterinarians)I think draing dog ears even if you do this by yourself is pointless because you'll have to drain them over and over and over your whole life and it never stops. But once dog ears heal naturally and get like a cauliflower then they don't get hematoma again at leas my dog is not getting this anymore..Of course they don't look that pretty anymore but my dog is still beautiful and heppy hematoma free.
