Freezing is great. I got in the habit of freezing pretty much any virtual instrument or tracks with high-latency effects (like amp sims). It's quick and undoable! Right-click the freeze button, choose 'Freeze Options' and you can choose whether to include effects in the freeze. This was not the default behavior when I started using it, not sure about new installations of Cakewalk. Also extend the 'Freeze tail duration' if sounds like crashes ringing out are getting cut off. Thanks Mike!

Since I work completely in virtual instruments at the moment, I do this every time before starting the mix. I'll first bounce all the track MIDI clips to one clip, then extend the head of each track clip to the beginning of the timeline. That way all of the frozen audio files (which are rendered to the Audio project folder) start at the same place for archiving. Once that's done, I close Cakewalk and reopen the project (which loads really fast) just to make sure all the program memory is cleared out and recovered. Then I'll start my mix.

Ooh! Didn't know about freeze tail duration. As someone who likes things drenched in reverb that'll be a very handy setting I think.

Can you or Mike please help me. When I un-freeze certain virtual instruments the track moves/shifts out of time. I keep having to realign the track with the rest of the song tracks. It's super frustrating. Can someone please explain why this is happening and what to do about it . Thanks guys!

Disconnect from the internet when you are recording music. Some people don't think about this but there are apps that run in the background that people don't know about. these apps check for newer versions of the software. In the past, I have ruined good recordings simply because the Windows operating system was updating and I was unaware of this going on while I was trying to record music. You can turn off the update feature but the simplest way to fix it is to just disconnect from the internet. While the computer is on the internet the operating system will use system resources that could be used for recording. Use Task manager to close down programs that run in the background and programs that start when you turn on your computer. You got to be careful here because many of these are needed by the operating system. You can shut things off like google crash handler, Adobe startup apps, update apps, print spooler, and Microsoft office. You will be amazed at what this does for latency. They will all come back when you reboot your computer.

OK, that's fine but how come when I record its always late on playback too! I'm not even listening to myself playing through the daw, I'm listening through the direct signal on my interface. I've tried everything to fix it with multiple different daws, and there doesn't seem to be any information on this online. I get sooo tired of recording something and then having to drag it back afterward and line it up. PLEASE HELP, I'M LOSING MY MIND.

Annoyingly I have an issue where when I record into bandlab it plays back in time and in sync with everything else. But if I then do some more recordings it's then out of sync by a small amount but noticeable. If I refresh the preferences it then goes back to normal. I am using wasapi shared. What's my solution? Use asio?

Question for you. ASIO is two decades old, and so are most DAWs and audio interfaces. How come we can never bring the latency at the minimum setting without the clicks and pops? Why is there always a trade-off, even with a powerful system? Haven't software developers and hardware manufacturers found a way around this? Lots of questions. Sorry! I've always wondered...

Mike, you excelled yourself with this video! Great topic and even greater explanation! Question on the Task Manager measurements: I expected that freezing would reduce CPU and memory consumption during playback. Why does it help while no audio is playing? Do all the plug-ins process silence the whole time?

An additional tip for the latency part. If you apply the delay timing concept here, you will get the same results. Anything above 10 milliseconds will become identifiable by the human ear. Anything that's 10 or fewer milliseconds will not be distinguishable. In essence, all you really need your computer to do is hit 10 milliseconds for latency, and then you're good. Just balance that out with sampling. There's a super old and classic 80's/90's looking video on KZbin called the art of mixing. It teaches this concept along with a lot of other mixing ideas extremely well!

I have found that the best way to deal with latency without rearranging your computer settings every time you want to record is "OUTBOARD MONITORING", this is a little more advanced but, it really isn't that difficult. You just need a good interface with more than two outputs and a decent mixer, and this is not as expensive as it may sound.

Great video, Mike. I stumbled on another method of removing latency while recording vocals or guitars. I arm a track for recording in Cakewalk with the echo turned off. Then I open up the standalone version of IK Multimedia's Mix Box and load the effects I want to hear. Then I go back to Cakewalk and start recording. I can then hear my Cakewalk tracks and whatever I have going into Mix Box at the same time with zero latency. It is glorious. I wanted to share that with you and your viewers. You might make a video of that process, sometime. Thanks for all you do for us independent music producers! Mike Wilhoit, Dothan, Alabama, USA

10:50 When Mike suggests to change these settings during the course of a project he means BUFFER SIZE only. Do not change bit depth or sample rate during a project. If you have weird stuff happening, like audio playing slightly fast or slow, then you can try playing with sample rate to reset audio.

The reason why using 48kHz (IMHO) there is something called the "NYQUIST FREQUENCY" when you are doing digital sampling.. The Nyquist is the frequency that you digital bit-deptch will wrap around an create latency.. the Nyquist frequency is half of the SAMPLE rate frequency.. 44.1kHZ Nyquist is 22.05kHz.. imagine having your odometer in your car, it only goes up to a maximum of 99,999.9 miles, as soon as the next 0.1 mile, it goes back to zero 0.. then what happens to frequencies above the Nyquist frequency? those samples will show up digitally ast LOW frequencies, and it will ruin your quality.. it's called digital Aliasing.. If you use 44.1kHz you will have a Nyquist frequency of half that.. 22.05kHz.. which means you CANNOT sample a frequency above that with out risking really aweful Aliasing.. 44.1kHz should never process an audio signal above 22.05kHz and although the human ear cannot hear it, your body can sense this 'Presence' your bones and things around you will resonate, and your brain will pick it up. If you use 48kHz, your Nyquist is 24.0kHz no one can heare this, but it will be recorded in your track.. if you go to 96kHz, it's 48kHz audio signal, if you go to 192kHz your Nyquist freq is 96kHz, you will NEVER hear this.. but I warn you.. My dog CAN hear it and he'll run out of the room and outside.. :) truth.

if you use the onboard 192 affects, it requires you to set the Universal Control to use IT's own mixer to do this.. I have always disabled it, so I have full control of mixing inside of CWbB (cake walk by bandlab).. Question: would just a super fast motherboard in your computer handle this? I'm about to build another new DAW computer, and basing it on the Ryzen 9 3900X, 12 cores, minimum.. I'm hoping that with Faster CPU more and faster dual access memory (64GB.. can go to 128Gb eventually) I should be able to speed up the Computer processing to and from the PreSonus 192.. (not found a better ADC and Ihve tried many of them .. cheap.. and up). Hope youre' well.. looking forward to some inspriation on this.. cheers, Mike

Hi Mike, love your videos! I have a weird latency problem that none of your suggested fixes addressed. I have a very simple project where I recorded a single 2-minute midi track chord progression. I disarm recording, set a loop on the first 12 seconds, hit play and then experiment with various melodies using my Yamaha keyboard. No latency problems on the first three iterations, but midway through the 4th iteration a latency shows up, and gets progressively worse with each iteration. By the 6th or 7th iteration it takes more than 10 seconds between pressing a piano key and the time the sound is heard. No latency if I click keys in the piano roll. I am using Windows 11 ver22H2 with the WASAPI Shared driver. I have no hardware audio interface. Tried ASIO4All and other software audio drivers, no joy. Fiddled with all the settings you mentioned, no joy. Nothing out of the ordinary in Task Manager. I'm stumped. The only workaround at the moment is to loop no more than three times, stop and start the playback again for another three loops. Suggestions?

OMG... Thank you for this video. A million times. Freezing the tracks fixed everything. Now I have to drive into the details, explain my situation, and ask a questions If anyone can answer and help others please reply. I was trying to redo a directly recorded piano track from my electronic piano. I didn't like the sound but I didn't have the versatility of midi tracks available to change it so I wanted to redo the track using midi. The latency made it impossible. I thought 'that's strange, I didn't have such latency before'. I created a new project and confirmed that I don't really have a latency problem. If i delete all of the tracks the latency goes away. Freezing the tracks fixed all of that. So my questions are... -What is the payoff? I presume that freezing a track is using up storage space to pre-render the tracks. Pre-rendering several tracks uses a lot of storage space. Is this accurate? -If the previous question was accurate, does unfreezing a track free up that space? Or does it use up space every time you make a change and freeze again? -What effects does freezing a track have on other aspects of the mix? Are there situations where freezing a track stops providing information to other tracks or bus's in the mix? EDIT: And again. Thank you. This video didn't only confirm my thoughts as I attempted to fix my problem, but ended with EXACTLY what I was looking for. I can now move on to creating music instead of digging through forums/settings because of a hangup. (I had about 25 tracks. Only 12 were necessary so I deleted the others but the problem persisted.)

I'm using the most current version of Cakewalk (2021). It doesn't appear to have a "Preferences" option (none under File, and typing P on the keyboard doesn't do anything). Even if I summon the "Help Bot" and type "buffer", "timing master", or other related terms, it comes back stating that "I couldn't find any relevant articles", meaning there is nothing in their Help menu that acknowledges any of these functions. Where are these functions in the 2021 version of Cakewalk?

Generally: ASIO will NOT share with other software concurrently running that wants to access the external Audio device, which is great, because that would cause a lot of latency, so they block it from being shared (well there's an option, but it's not a good idea) ASIO4ALL will share, so you risk the possibility of latency. Also, I have noticed if your latency buffer is not just right and the number of samples per millisecond, I've seen the Audio engine completely drop out during playback and during recording. OMG that is just not good.. when it drops out, and a very fast dialog box comes up and disappears faster than you can read it tries to re-connect to the Audio device and it will test every channel's profile.. this is annoying; Cakewalk was confused, the developers couldn't reproduce it, and they also use the 192 for their development ( a very very good reason to buy that device.. it's what CWbB was programmed to work with perfectly.. good advice there). If the latency is adjusted with samples, and the lowest millisecond latency, you will never notice any latency..if you have ever tried to 'over-clock' a computer, you have several parameters to adjust to fine tune it.. I do not recommend this, but with cakewalk you only have two parameters, buffer size and number of samples.. so it's conceivably easier.. the human ear cannot detect latencies below 3 ms, we have sensual limits and computers beat us big time.

Timing Problem, maybe relatet to this here as well: I use Band in a Box and Cakewalk by Bandlab, newbie. I generated a basic for a song in BIAB at 120 bpm, and imported the single tracks as wav.file into CW. And here the 120 bpm are much slower than in CW. This then finally also results ion the fact, that I cannot use vocval, sung into BIAB and then to use in CW, because the timing is so much different. I have no idea, where I can make the settings to match both programs at the same speed.

ASIO4ALL is a very useful tool. It's the only way to get onboard soundchips down to 15 ms or less input latency (depending on your CPU). Whoever is starting out without a standalone usb audio interface needs it. I used it for many years successfully. It reminds me, that you, Mike, could add another criteria, should you test other audio interfaces in the future: how good the ASIO driver performs. Especially in the low price segment, drivers are often outdated and don't work that well with Windows 10. Such a test should be a real life session, where many vst instruments and effects, tracks and busses are in use.

Pls let's get into the latency tutorials. The speech is too much and it's taking the beauty of the practicals tutorials away pls concentrate on the practicals with less talk. Thanks my opinion though.

Thank you so much I did what you did and it fixed my problem straight away, I didn't think it would be that easy, I had my studio set up then moved house's and then I started getting the delay once I set it back up

LOVE your videos. You have such a great way of explaining things and showing things with just the right amount of "getting to it" but still hitting the supporting information necessary for real understanding.

Extremely useful tips especially with freezing tracks. What i used to do is mute them and turn off the plugins. It helped but will freezing be more effective?
@rickrockzyootoob
@rickrockzyootoob 4 жыл бұрын
Of course when you mute and disable, you can't hear the track. With freezing, you can, and you might be able to turn in a better performance in relation to the other parts playing in your song.

hi Mike, thanks for this valuable information on latency. Just a newbie in Cakewalk and a lot of learning curves and frustrations. Have not reached the vocal recording and still figuring out audio interface on my guitar and keyboard. Yesterday just received my audio interface Komplete Audio 2 and another thing to figure out. Decided to your channel because your methods of teaching the technical things seems to work for me. Let you know how things workout in one of your videos. Great tutorial. - allan

I am just starting my "home recording adventure" and after watching some of your videos about Cakewalk, I abandoned Reaper. I really appreciate your ability to explain complicated things in a clear and interesting way like Freezing for example, I keep watching :))

Thanks for the tops. I found this video two years after you put it up. You mentioned that certain plugins on the Master Bus could cause latency. Sure enough, when I disabled Ozone 10 Essentials on the master bus, the latency went away.

Hi there. I was mixing for one of my projects when I randomly wanted to try using the hidden 'Drum Replacer' plugin (I'm an idiot) on one of the tracks which in hindsight I shouldn't have. Cakewalk immediately crashed, and upon reopening, audio wouldn't play for some reason. I have absolutely no idea why. I can see the tracks are technically playing, and I can see the volume on the individual tracks but the master bus isn't responding. I've tried multiple things, plugging in/out my soundcard, rerouting tracks, etc, but the audio just wouldn't play. All I hear is a popping/crackling sound when I hit 'play' and 'pause'. Audio otherwise works for new projects, so not sure what really happened post the software crash that was triggered by the drum replacer. Not even sure if that was what caused it. Can you/anyone PLEASE advise because I'm absolutely lost for ideas?

Cakewalk crashed because you tried to use the Drum replacer as a vst in fx but it only works as a region fx. select the clip right click it, and then select apply region fx it will show multiple options like vocal sync, melodyne, drum replacer.
