How to Fix Leaking Power Steering Line on Chevy Trailblazer or GMC Envoy Step By Step

This is a how to video showing step by step repair of a leaking power steering line on a Chevy Trailblazer using 3/8 steel tubing and compression fittings. This repair is an alternative to replacing the entire power steering line for those that do not have the time or money to do so. Thanks for this video man. I forgot about using compression fittings. My high pressure line blew in two spots where the rubber grommet is and down below where the bottom bracket is in the tire well. I used a 2 foot length of copper brake line because you can bend copper to shape. I replaced the whole length and used compression fittings . They tried telling me a the parts store that compression fitting won't work with high pressure pwr steering , They are full of sht. It works great no leaks ,It cost me a total of $20 and less than an hour instead $200 for new line, Not mention it's a big job on my Envoy to replace that line . A Mechanic would charge at least another $200 for labour so thanks you saved me $400 and a day in the shop.

I had the exact same leak in the exact same spot on my 2005 TB. The video was a huge help. The only thing I did differently was that I used a Bosch multi-tool with a metal blade on it to cut the old tubing. Let the blade do the work. It saved a lot of time. Excellent video!

Dude I have watched many repair videos... you definitely do a well job at explaining things... so well its like I feel like we could be or have been best friends for years. haha anyways great job. I did this on a break line one tine when I was traveling across the country. I slammed on my brakes in my brake line blew. I had an avalanche hauling a 6 x 12 trailer coming from Minnesota to Florida. This happened in Kentucky. well I found a garage mechanic in Benton Kentucky I spent the night at a motel and the next day found the mechanic at the auto store. He fixed my truck in 2 hours while they were fixing my truck they dropped me off in town and I had breakfast and shopped. they called me up and picked me up and i was back on the road in 2 hours. Big shout out to those guys who ever they were.. I think Dave something. when I finally sold the truck I told the new owner about the repair and to fix it properly. I saw him pulling a trailer now and then. Then one day it was for sale all smashed up. I was thinking I told you so. Anyways he got a steal on the truck so Karma for him for laughing at me for selling it so cheap. I think you just got a new subscriber, I'll have to look first to see what your content is

This is an amazing video and it guided me through the whole process on my 2006 chevy trail blazer. A few things I learned along the way: avoid brass nuts on the compression fittings and instead opt for chrome nuts (still with a brass compression sleeve) because they are less likely to bend out the backside when tightening. Also, after you have it all back together and if the power steering stops working, then rev up the engine while in park to get the fluid running and help any air bubbles get out. Also turning the wheel back and forth with the power steering cap open can help get bubbles out of the line. Thanks!

luckily my leak was on the low pressure return line so i cut out the leaking section and slipped on a 5” piece of 3/8” rubber return line hose and used a few worm screw hose clamps at both ends. This video was still very help to me; thank you!!

I live paycheck to paycheck & can’t afford to take it to a shop to get fixed, so I have to do everything myself by watching videos (replaced my own toilet doing that) Anyhow, being female, with slight brain damage (from meningitis) & ADD, a lot of the time mechanics, contractors etc with their “free estimates” have and/or tried to rip me off. I just finished. So far so good. I had a small pipe cutter that is a ratchet type. Worked great. I had to repair the lines on the bottom not the top ones on the shock tops

Good method. I just tried this method and i'll probably opt out for using a hose tomorrow. The nut keeps coming off on one end. It leaked when I started it cause it under high pressure. Was hard to use the cutting thing and get it to rotate. This gave me the stepping edge to get the hose in there and some clamps and a rubber 3/8 hose which I will get tomorrow. If you do this, know that you will spend a lot of time on this so if ur not patient and willing do not do it.

I'm doing this on my rainier. I cut a little bit of the wheel well with a box cutter to give a little more space to get the ratchet in there just above both bolts holding the forward brackets down. Thanks for this video, big help

They sell the whole replacement line on amazon. Pretty cheap and fairly easy to do. Note to everyone remove your plastic wheel well and your tire. Makes it a lot easier than what your seeing in this video

I am aware they sell the line(s) however this repair was under $10 in parts and less labor intensive than replacing an entire line in the middle of winter in a snow covered driveway. No jacking up the car, no laying on my back in the snow. Thank you for watching and commenting.

It is a nice rig due to the longevity of the inline 6 and the fact that it's a full body on frame SUV but yeah living in the salt eats them fast. There are clearly things GM could have designed differently as they are not the most pleasant vehicle to work on. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Used rubber fuel line on my 04 failblazer. The low side held but the high side kept breaking. I'd like to see someone get the rusty nut off the rack and pinion to replace the high pressure line. My lines are so badly rusted I kept cutting and replacing. I'd recommend changing the whole line if its really rusty, otherwise it'll break again.

So this method does for sure work for high pressure lines without bursting? The line on my vehicle is crammed back by the firewall. Fortunately the part of it that broke is easy to get to and is right behind the intake manifold. Othrwise you would have to have a childs arm to replace all of it (which everyone is telling me to do versus repairing) without dropping the motor and its $180 just for the part alone as a DIY so I am guessing probably $5-600 to have a shop do it. I tried using heavy duty hose clamps and some heavy duty power steering hose from the parts store and it just keeps bursting the rubber hose.

I believe the low pressure is the outside and high pressure is the inside (closer to the engine), I may have said it wrong in the video, but the line I replaced was not spraying hard and that is the outer line, however I have seen this method used on both lines, as they both tend to rust in the same area on these trailblazers ( very poor engineering on the behalf of GM for those of us in road salt use areas of the country). Ok to use a dremel to cut line? Having clearance issues because 10mm bolt rounded on bracket below.

If you are talking about the 10mm bolt that holds the bracket that goes over the rubber grommet that the lines run through I don't feel as tho it is even necessary to put it back on so I would just bend / cut the damn bracket straps that go over the rubber, those lines are going to fall anywhere without that bracket, just put the rubber back on the lines to keep them from rubbing against the strut tower and it should be ok

As far as a dremel, as long as the cut is clean and straight enough to slide that little ring that comes with the compression fitting you should be good. Another tip, don't over tighten the nut on the compression fitting, I have actually had the damn nuts split on me before believe it or not, just get it tight enough that it doesn't leak fluid.

Hi I have a 2006 trailblazer with the identical problem. However after fixing the leak by splicing in compression tubes. My starring wheel is stiff and is now difficult to turn. Don’t know what happened. Also now my daytime headlights no longer works. But the regular headlight still works. I may have accidentally screwed up some of the wires when I moved it around to get to the lines.

Quick question - is that 3/8" referring to the thread size of the brake line? When I shop for steel brake line all I see is 3/16" brake line with a 3/8" coupling(which of course would be replaced with compressions fittings - I assume also to be 3/8"). Thanks!

Part # PAX-612 is the part number at advance auto parts for a short piece of 3/8 brake line, 3/16 is standard brake line and will be too small, you need to use the 3/8 line. If you ask any parts store they should carry short sticks of the 3/8 line. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You don't flare when using compression fittings (Note - never use compression fittings for brake lines!!!). I used compression fittings because it was power steering and not brakes.

@@E4EonEbay so basically the fitting tighten them self without leaking fluid. I’m sorry I’m getting familiar with this method. I’ve done brakes line with this but didn’t know you didn’t you ain’t have to flare the line!.

@@doelife yeah, that style fitting doesn't require flares like your standard brake line unions. You could go with that style if you want but fitting the flare tool in that area would be a real pain.
