here are a couple of minor variations to your "using the welder as a preheater" that I have used 1: put the metal in a vise and with one hand i weld the joint and with the other hand i bend the material. I crank up the volts a bit so it gets cherry red quite quickly so it bends very easily. 2: If you want to make precise bends you can cut out a small V on the compression side of the bend and then fill in the V bending while heating. With a notch in the metal it will bend exactly where you want it-plus very little grinding since you are just filling in the groove you removed :)

not sure how long the legs are on your project but in our city if you go deeper than 12 inches you have to let them know at "call before you dig" to avoid hitting any utilities. They require a few days lead time as well...

I did not think of that, most of the lines going in and out of a house out here should be a little deeper than that. I was mostly concerned with missing sprinkler lines.
