To Fix Microsoft Word Documents Not Opening in Windows 10 or Windows 11, even after making Word Application as the default app, follow these steps:
Open the Windows Settings - Click “Apps” then “Installed Apps” - Click on the three dots towards Microsoft Office Application.
Now select “Modify” - then in the opening window, select “QUICK REPAIR” and then click “Repair” - in the next window too click “Repair” - Wait until the repairing process will be completed! That’s all!

PERFECT! I just installed Office 365 and I couldn't open Word documents either by double clicking on them (even though the definitely are associated with Word) or by right clicking on the Word icon on the task bar and clicking the document I just had open 10 seconds ago!
