How to fix non-working keys with a pencil for free

Just throwing my cents here: The pencil fix can work fine, but if a key is dead, always clean the contact first with circuit-friendly cleaning fluid, then reassemble and give it a try. Sometimes it's a thin layer of dirt what's causing the faulty connection. Adding a coat of pencil graphite can fix the problem temporarily, but that thin coat will wear out eventually.

Not sure if there is a more permanent solution other than that but I'm sure you could use some other material thats more longer lasting but i just have no idea. Maybe $50 buy a new contact board compared to $2500 for a new keyboard in my case.

Some more tips. So on my keyboard, 3 keys went dead. Cleaning the landing pads and swapping the rubber membrane did not cure the problem. Looking at the circuit board, I noted that keys are wired in groups. Although the three keys were not next to each other, they were in fact part of a group. So I traced the fault to a break in the PCB track. I fixed this with a bit of soldering and the dead keys are now alive! However, all three now play louder than any others. This cannot be due to their membranes, as it is not common to all three keys. So I have more work to do!

Hey, you gave me a big hint! In mu case contacts under the keys were totally fine. I found a tiny corrosion on pcb board connector, it made 3 random keys dead with my casio. Now it's fully working again. Thanks mate!

Thanks for saving my Yamaha Keyboard. I tried taking it apart cleaning it everything it just kept getting worse. I was thinking it was going to the garbage can but then I found this video tried it and it fixed all of my dead keys. Plays 100% now thank you so much again. Also I dropped a cup of coffee on my keyboard that's what screwed it up and it still work

I would recommend simply rubbing the contacts with a cotton swab moistened with distilled water to minimize residue (I used the water condensed under the lid of an electric kettle). This fixed 2 non-working keys, and I did the whole keyboard to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

I fixed the same issue with my CTK 3000. Here is the quick fix, you need: 1. Interest in technology (to open the casio) 2. Simple Pensil Eraser. I rubbed the same surface area with rubber and the rubber sucked the entire black dust and now it is working just like before 💯

Thank you very much! It worked on my Korg SP-170DX which was dead for 2 years, what I did was scrape a lot of the lead off the pencil and emboss the contacts with it

I did this as well. The problem is its easy to short out the contacts with graphite "haze" on the non-contact portions. My fix was to go over it after with a Qi-tip and a lighted magnifier to find the shorts. Worked great! NOW my issue is that one Bb ALSO plays the # above it every time! GRRRRR

I've seen a few videos like this, but it works better if you clean the contacts on the PCB board, and then apply graphite to the carbon contact in the the rubber strip

I wanted to give an update that it has been two months of heavy playing and my keyboard is still working perfectly after using the Pencil Trick. After spilling some coffee I had a dead key and the more I tried to clean it more the problem spread until I had about 10 dead keys

Thank you sooo much! I had an old Casio 671 keyboard, not in use fo rmany years. The keys were working fine, but the buttons, that you need to use to select t he sounds or rhythms were not reacting, when pushing them. Also the on/off button did not work most of the time. After cleaning the "contacts" with alcohol and additionally applying some pencil on them it works now like it is a new keyboard!!! Can't thank you enough :) Now my kids can use my old keyboard to practise music

I had that problem. Mine was because the board was corroded from soda. Clean between the solder traces with alcohol and a cotton swab, then scratch the junk out from between connecting solder points with a file or your nail. I even washed it in the sink with dish soap and dried it before putting it back in.

Dear Michele, I have just repaired a Yamaha P85 digital piano. I've spent two hours fitting the rubber (contact) strips thoroughly. Everything works perfectly, However, I have the feeling that the keys on the right hand side (above C3) are louder then the bass keys on the left. I've also noticed that the rubber strips have some labels like T8 or T14 etc, although they all look and feel the same. Do these rubber strips have to be mounted in a specific order? Hi there. You'll never believe it, but I had two keys on my old Roland W30 that didn't work, so what I did was to take a piece of cardboard, curl it a bit with bending, then insert it between the keys (to the left of the key that wasn't working) , then I dragged the cardboard slowly up and down (dragging it towards me worked the best) while repeatedly pressing the key, until I heard the sound of the note come back. I did this to two non working keys (separated by an octave) , and they both came back and are working fine. Maybe there was dust or cat hairs under there ? or loose wires, I don't know. What do you think? I'd be curious to know.

@SunTai Ya, I have a Novation 61SL mk2 and it is a royal PITA to keep clean. First of all, I'm not sure if the keyboard response was ever even. Secondly, I've lost some screws on the way after cleaning it several times. Admittedly, I've gotten pretty frustrated a few times and I vape a lot around it. Still, it stays good for a few weeks then I either have a dead or extremely loud key in no time. Basically, cleaning it works - you can use alcohol or contact cleaner - but that doesn't guarantee it'll stay clean. Oh, and only clean the contact that needs it. If you clean the whole board, you're asking for trouble. And make sure your room is free of dust!

@SunTai Replacing what part, exactly? This keyboard has the standard rubber domes on a strip with nubs inside which hit oval sensors on a circuit board. It doesn't seem like any part is bad, it's just that the rubber should probably create a seal so nothing gets inside the domes but I guess it doesn't seal well enough. Either that or the nubs hitting the sensor shed. Forget this keyboard tho. It should've been designed with maintenance or better environmental sealing in mind - at least for the moving performance parts.

@SunTai Good to know about Yamaha. I was considering an RD-88. Wouldn't that use a different contact system since its a fully-weighted piano action? Korg also makes the D1 which I also have in the running. The keyboard I'm complaining about is the Novation and I think it has a Fatar action. I didn't know Yamaha makes Korg's actions. All of them?

Have just opened my PSR 353. The rubber strip is a conducting rubber . I.E. it is graphite impregnated. With use, the tiny rubbes tits become resistive . Wiping their surface provides a new better conducting surface. Go for it.

I have from middle c down almost a full octave of dead keys .. it started with one getting loud and going out intermittently, then being completely dead for almost a full octave . From my experience, this is not a lasting fix. If youre going to all the trouble of taking it apart, you might want a more permanent solution. A little acetone on a qtip can sometimes work when scrubbed lightly across the contact on the bottom of the rubber bubble strip. The best fix is probably new contact bubble strips.
