Do not put silicone between the valve cover and the gasket. This will make the next replacement nearly impossible. Does not add any additional protection. Add only on the corners of cylinder head surfaces.

My 2003 Altima was facing the same issue - oil leaking into the first cylinder (just like the video!), causing it to misfire. Unnecessary use of gasket maker that will only cause more problems down the road. Use gasket sealant to hold a new gasket in place and only use rtv where the manufacturer service manual says to do so.

Applying gasket maker all the way around the valve cover and on the head surface is a very bad idea. It will not give you "extra protection" and usually causes leaks due to the gasket not being able to seat properly. Do you think you're smarter than the engineers at Nissan? If the facory doesn't do it then neither should you. It will also greatly increase the difficulty and time requried for this repair the next time around. Only apply a small amount of gasket maker(and use the grey, not the black) to the two corners as done from the factory.
@DIYtime10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input, gdb 544. 1) You are absolutely right, it's not necessary to do it, just as I said in the video and it will take longer cleaning up next time 10 more years from now if I still have the car and it's still alive with the same engine... It may not give much "extra protection", but it wont cause problems either. Excess maker will be squeezed out as long as you put in the engine cover before it hardens. Mine doesn't leak till this day. 2) Black maker is pretty much the same as grey and works for same temperature and applications. The only difference is a sales pitch of aftermarket manufacturer. It is supposedly has "higher oil resistance". 3) Respect to all Nissan engineers. I wish I was half as smart as they are. They've done incredible job with that GT-R and more.... I'll consider putting your recommendations on my video. Thanks again. Have a great day.
@cosbyutube10 жыл бұрын
on a 2006 nissan altima you cant buy these seals. you have to buy the valve cover. so to answer your question.. YES i am smarter than a nissan engineer. $5 oppossed to $140 for a needless part. again. yes i am smarter than them. also i'd like to add that my daughter will not be buying another nissan if she expects me to ever work on it. what a piece of poorly designed junk.

Bullshit!, in reality based world "the proof is in the pudding" factory way fucked me good! Besides Factory way says to treat "Head Gasket" this way but not "Valve Cover" (Upper one) what since does that make when Valve Cover is made to keep out oil but ends up leaking anyway? Instructions else where based on REAL WORLD BASED REALITY say you can get 200,000 out of Gasket seals when applying the Sealant so....do it the right way because every video about head gasket BY MECHANICS FIXING customers problems says and show them doing it period!...what the WORLD's wrong but the factory is right?...same idiots who produce manuals with ALL KINDS of improper steps and advice that they retract and update in their later versions so...

Hey anybody I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with 193,000 miles and I was just doing preventive maintenance by changing the valve covers because when I changed the spark plugs at 170,000 miles one spark plug was covered in oil the ceramic and where it sparks at and changed the 3 rear ignition coils but anyways this week I replaced the valve covers front and rear and that took me 4 days since it’s very cold in Chicago and it was snowing and so when I was working on the front one I had the front ignition coils in a drawer and they were kind of getting snowed on so I just wiped them off and closed the dresser to dry them and install them tomorrow so when I put the car back together I had a code that read P0081 then I looked around the engine and I just reconnected a harness and I reset the code then it was running fine for 30 seconds then it got to running rough again and got a code P0300 and wonder if it’s the front ignition coils but I replaced all the spark plugs at 170,000 miles and only the rear 3 ignition coils

How did this solve your leak into the plug hole? This gasket has nothing to do with that part of the cover.......and all that extra sealant.. cringed a little bit.
@DIYtime7 жыл бұрын
Well, the thing is, when I replaced valve cover, it came with new PCV valve, which I believe was the root cause of the problem. Stuck PCV doesn't releave pressure builtup, causing gasket and o-rings failure. On that particulat Altima plug holes gaskets are built into the valve cover, thus directly related. As far as extra sealant... yea, totally unnecessary, but it won't hurt eather. I saw someone doing it... shouldn't have listened...

Hmm. I have a 03 Sentra SE-r and had oil with my plug as well. Built in seals to changed V/C. Two years later the same thing happened. I didn't change the PCV valve though. That might have been my mistake, not checking it either. I found this customization of the cover but haven't fully got the dimensions on it other seals and spark plug cylinder to match up. yhst-13387653796039.stores.yahoo.net/diynivqvacor.html

Yep. Those plastic v covers warp easily. Many people think that gaskets are the problem
@ricebike4 жыл бұрын
ugh, so just get the whole valve cover from the git-go?
@DM-hw4cr4 жыл бұрын
@@ricebike worth the 90 to 100 dollars, comes with seals and guarantees no leaks. Look online. Not a part you will get from an auto parts store

Did it cause the car to jerk and move before it was replaced ?
@DIYtime9 жыл бұрын
Delorian Glenn Yes, oil in spark plug well could possibly cause cylinder misfire, and the symptoms described above.

Is the gasket maker needed? I have the same problem with my 2006 nissan altima 2.5 s, But my car shoots white smoke out of the back any ideas if changing the gasket would solve this?
@DIYtime4 жыл бұрын
It’s required in some of the places (rounded and raised parts of the block), but not everywhere. I would suggest you checking compression....

This looks fun. I’m dreading changing my bmw gasket smh.

Well I just got screwed by the dealership. $600 for valve cover replacement. . I wish I watched this video first.

Sorry to hear that. When I first realized how much money you can save by doing some simple things by yourself, there was no way back. That's how basically I started this channel. Thank you for checking my videos.

I have 2009 nissan altima 2.5s.. there was a leak in one of the spark plug well.. I tried replacing the gasket.. but I later found out that the tube seals are embedded in the valve cover.. can anyone tell me how much the valve cover would cost and wher can I get them? Thanks

My car hesitates (when under heavy acceleration) but runs fine when not accelerating hard. I found oil on one of my spark plugs. Could this be causing a cylinder misfire?
@DIYtime4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can.

Hello I'm trying to replace a valve gasket on a 94 crown Victoria and the one they have in store is totally different from the one replacing...it's a blue rubber without the holes thats on original one And auto parts says that the kind my car uses...so how do I apply this one...thanks #stumped

I just replaced my valve cover gasket and now the engine turns over but it does not start! I replaced this gasket before no problem. I don’t know what could be wrong.. no oil in plug tubes, put everything back in order.. help

What car is it? Did you do anything else besides valve cover gasket?
@cazimmerman2114 жыл бұрын
The torque wrench step is a bad idea. Those screws are too small to torque down. I followed this video step by step until I used the torque wrench and snapped the screw off in the head. Now I’m really in trouble. The bolt snapped at 20lbs of torque.
@DIYtime4 жыл бұрын
Did you use in-lbs or ft-lbs? There is a huge difference. 20 in-lbs shouldn't have strip that bolt. These are the specs from the official Nissan repair manual.
@john2024killuminati5 жыл бұрын
You dont need the rtv that's is what the gasket is for.
@DIYtime5 жыл бұрын
It is required in a few places only, but overall yes, it is not necessary, but it wont hurt either.

so why did he mentioned that it was needed for that one side of the valve cover?

Nice job and great editing!, mine is leaking next to Thermostat housing (2001 Chevy Metro LSI - but is oil so... I replaced With kit but following stupid OEM directions per Costless employee advice, finding out hard way, it slow leaks to outside EVEN MORE! Re-doing Permatex Hi-Temp (650F) Gasket Sealant (Red). I liked the way you smeared it after applying to 2nd bottom-engine block, and I will do the same. Update: So sealant went great but wasn't the Oil Leak problem, because it's still leaking and more apparent now. It's leaking from outside the valve area down from underneath (Magnetivity/Gravity) directly from highest area...the Sensor directly ABOVE the Thermostat Housing; catching onto the bolt-on metal ledge of Thermostat area. Don't know the exact name but EXACT problem and pic can be found on the Blog covering the problem..... geometroforum.com/thermostat-housing-leak-t30186.html

It was my oil sensor O-Ring area seal basically exactly like bad seals in vid but bigger ...costless tried to match it but just couldn’t and that SEAL ONLY COMES IN $75 entire engine seal & gasket kit for rebuilds, breaking-down entire engine block, A different long time experienced employee this time said he would trust Permatex high-temp sealant over a new OEM RUBBERY SEAL NOT made for long-term anyway...I agreed, made a heavy duty fat seal squeezed into round groove, stopped leak, headed to Hollywood south driving 1,000 miles 10-days ago, and still running strong!

Hi there, Is it compulsory to fasten the bolts into numeric order. What can I do if I got 3 cylinder engine with 6 bolts. Thanks
@DIYtime2 жыл бұрын
The main purpose of that is to tighten them evenly and not create too much pressure on one side, while other side is loose. That could displace rubber gasket. If you tighten bolts across from each other gradually, you should be good.

I ordered a gasket oem from Nissan but the one that came with the new valve cover I ordered looks and feels stiffer and better quality. The Nissan OEM one looks good also but feels more soft and stretchy. Should I stick to the stiff one or to the soft one?
@DIYtime2 жыл бұрын
I would use OEM. Usually are they better. It probably better to have it soft, to contract & expand from heating/cooling off.

Would these problems cause the car not to start? Iv had the misfire already but never got it fixed and now my car cranks but doesnt start. I know doing this would fix the misfire, but would it also make it start again?
@DIYtime6 жыл бұрын
Do you have the same Altima? I had no start when Crankshaft positioning sensor broke. Scan your car for error codes to get a better idea what's wrong.
@triplebogeysallday8 жыл бұрын
The video is super helpful, but Can you explain or show how to do the temporary fix with the gasket maker on the spark plug tube?
@DIYtime8 жыл бұрын
You can put some gasket maker around spark plug tubes to stop oil from leaking out. It may not work if O-shaped seals already fell off like it was in my case. In any case, replace valve cover as soon as possible.
@triplebogeysallday8 жыл бұрын
ok, also another question came up earlier today. is there any other inner tube lower gaskets that can be part of the problem? if so, what would you recommend?
