In this video, we will be changing the valve cover gasket on our 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5 liter QR25DE engine! After receiving many calls that the reason for oil showing up in the spark plug holes was because of leaking spark plug seals, we decided it was (finally) time to go ahead and change ours. The process is pretty straight forward and involves removing a couple of engine mounts after supporting the engine with a hydraulic jack chocked with some wood to prevent any oil pan damage! This procedure applies to cars with the 2.5 liter engine in the Nissan Altima, Sentra SE-R and Rogue. This provides all bolt sizes and approximate torque specifications when re-tightening. We also went ahead and replaced the ignition coils and a vacuum tube that fell apart as we were pulling it off! Enjoy!

@yovidify hmm, sounds like a massive vacuum leak of some kind. Go over all the hoses and make sure they're all clamped down and they're not cracked like my PCV valve hose was. Is the check engine light on?

My dad made me spend MY $ to buy MY CAR...but he made the CHOICE! His choice was a 1956 Rambler. I was so angry! Now I understand why he did that. He taught me how to do a complete fluid change, nrw park plugs, gap them to spec and change belts and use a timing light. It got me to work and back and i was too embarrassed to be seen driving it do he didn't have to worry about me cruising with friends or boyfriends. I have a Nissan now and I cant afford to pay a mechanic so i watched all your videos reviewed my owners manual and read reviews of oils and fluids. I think I can do my own tuneup!

Guys. I cannot begin to find words I feel would truly encompass how much I appreciate your channel. I have a 2012 Altima and decided a couple of years ago to dive deep into learning the art of auto mechanics. (Never too late to learn new skills!) Trick Shop is my absolute first go to when researching my next project and required repair. Thank you so much for taking the time and putting out the effort to provide such a valuable asset for all us grease monkeys out here. The information is always spot on and I particularly appreciate how you try to make sure to provide a point of view to the work being done that ensures anyone watching will have little to no issue knowing where to go and what to look for when getting down to business on our rides. You rock! And once again. Thank you so freaking much for the help.

Big Huge Thanks!!! You showed me the way.. from the products to the first and last bolt and everything in between . Thanks again... The best video i have seen on this repair. My 2008 Nissan Altima went from running sluggish, oil in the spark plug wells , misfiring, valve cover an oily mess to running like a charm. To those who hesitate and wonder if you could do this, you can with this video and the the right tools and products.

Watched multiple videos to change the valve cover gasket for my 2008 Altima(129,500 miles) after being told it needed to be replaced. Wasn't burning oil or having oil in the spark plug well but decided to also replace the valve cover too as it would already be off. This is the best (imo) of a few very good videos out there. Note that for the engine "lift" / prop up I did have a lift that was taller so ended up using a piece of 3/4" (instead of a 2X4) to place under the oil pan. An other video shows putting a jack stand on a part of the motor just the side of the oil pan (closest to the passenger tire) but I could get under the car well enough to do that. Took me closer to 2.5 hours to get it done, by feel better have done it myself. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and giving other the confidence and knowledge to do so.

Hi Tim! Thank you so much! I'm really glad you were able to get your son's car fixed. Mine just passed 200k miles a month ago! It's leaking some oil I suspect through the oil cooler gasket in the back. Just added some leak detection dye to my oil. Apparently, it's pretty common on our vehicles to leak there as well. Other than that, she's still going strong! 💪

Today I did this job and it was a lot easier thanks to your video. The only thing I would add is the first round of torque should be 17 inch pounds, BUT most likely your 1/4" torque wrench won't go that low, so just use judgment. I tightened it in two rounds before finally tightening to the 74 or 76 inch pounds or whatever it was. Thanks again for a great video.

Uninstalled and prepped everything today, will install everything tomorrow! Video is very clear and informative! One thing I did different was not touching the 18mm bolt at 6:37 (i didnt have the tool for it) but it didnt matter as far as uninstalling goes. Again, video is perfect! Cheers Update: After a day everything looks good! One thing to watch out for: my brittle tube was still intact when I removed/reinstalled it however the clamp was no good and caused a minor air leak. Simply replaced the clamp.

I love how easy you make it to understand the whole process. You got yourself a new subscriber. I Got the same exact issue on my 2008 Altima. It all started as a simple spark plug job but turned out all my coils were dipped in oil. I have a question though, after I replace the valve cover is it okay to use the same spark plugs and coils or it needs new ones after doing all this? Thank you
@TrickShiftGarage
@TrickShiftGarage 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words 😊 It really depends on how the car was running before you tried to change the plugs. If it was running rough or the engine was misfiring, I'd go and replace both the spark plugs and ignition coils as they could be worn out or damaged from the oil. But if you are in a tight pinch, you can try to clean them up and see if it will get you by in the short-term. Hope this helps you and good luck! 😁👍

@@TrickShiftGarage Thank you so much! One more thing, today I just did the prep work while I wait for the parts to arrive. I sucked all the oil out of all 4 cylinders and cleaned them as best as I could. After, I took out some spark plugs just to see their condition but what I saw was a lot of dirt & debris where the spark plugs sit on the combustion chamber. Is there a safe way to clean those without getting stuff into the combustion?

I picked up a 2010 Altima hybrid today wiht 124,000 miles. I had a Nissan Dealer do a complete pre-purchase inspection. One "must do" is the valve cover gasket replacement. Another was oil cooler gasket replacement (enjoyed your video on that repair too). I am now a subscriber. Question is, can I expect your "how to videos" to apply to the hybrid model as well? Thanks !!

Hi Frank! Thank you so much for watching and subscribing, we really appreciate it! I've never considered the Altima hybrid andif our videos can be used. The engine is similar to the non hybrid so it might apply to the hybrid. I don't think the CVTs are the same though since the hybrid incorporates the electric motor in it too. I imagine the brakes, suspension and exterior pieces are probably the same parts. Thanks for watching! 👍

So, I did this yesterday (Sunday 11/27/22) on my wife's 2010 Altima and it was a 3-hour job but could have been shorter with one main issue that I had. Although I did have the jack/2x4 under the oil pan and it was secured, the engine still shifted with it moving forward so the whole engine was off. I had to push the engine towards the windshield to get the bolt on the engine mount connected which took lots of strength, time and luck. I was able to do it but needless to say it took away time. The only other thing that happened which was user error was tightening the 12 bolts on the valve cover. I used my torque wrench on each of those bolts and all clicked to what you stated for the torque spec except for #6 on the diagram you showed. Needless to say, it broke off and I have to now try and remove that. My question to you and is after putting it all back together, having it run and driven for about an hour with no leaks how important it is to replace that bolt. I have the tools to do it, but I don't want to feel like I needed it to do yesterday if you know what I mean. Any insight would be appreciated. Overall though this video made the job really easy. Thanks for this video.

Dang, sorry to hear that man! I would try to drill a small hole into the part of the bolt that's broken in the engine. Then push a small flat head screwdriver into that drilled hole, the purpose of the screwdriver being to get a good "bite" on the bolt, then try to turn it out. Another idea would be to look into getting a bolt extractor kit. Their drill bits are reversed so as your drill into the bolt it rotates it counter clockwise to back it out Hope these helps you. Good luck! 🙂

I noticed you dont have the shield on the Exhaust on. Did you remove them? i had to remove the one thats below because it was rattling. There still a lot of rattling left after removing it. Also, a suggestion on this video is to tell people to be careful with the wires since some altimas have lots of miles and those wires turn crispy and the rubber covering the wires snap, leaving the wires exposed. I have to change the coil pig tails because some are exposed due to the rubber falling off. I have to perform this job too since i get a a little oil leaking on my nissan. I can tell because i can smell burned oil when i accelerate or when driving uphill for a while. Funny part is, i kept telling my mechanic that i have an oil leak and that its coming from the top. He kept telling me that its from the bottom and didnt fix the damn thing. Now i gotta do it myself because i have other repairs to do and cant afford to do all of them lol Nice video quality btw!!!!

Thank you for the comment, really appreciate it! The exhaust cover I removed (and kept off) when I replaced my whole exhaust system last year. It was just a personal choice (I liked how the headers looked lol) That's a great idea on the wires! My wires seemed to be okay but I will keep that in mind going forward for the next time I have to take it off. Thank you! I was getting oil leaking into my spark plug bore holes! I had a few of my ignition coils drenched in oil, only one of them was actually clean. For the car having almost 200k miles, it held up admirably...haha I had oil leaking out all around the valve cover, and once I caught the oil in my spark plug holes, I knew I had to replace it asap. It took a whole weekend to shoot and do mine but if you start early you could have it finished in a full day. If you have any questions feel free to ask! Good luck and thank you so much for watching!! 👍

Just did this job this afternoon on my altima. Memorized your video so i didnt have to re-watch. The only thing i came back to verify were the torque on the nuts. So i did a separate comment with those times i needed to rewatch. It took me around 5-6 hours to do since i did 2 engine mounts (ill do the trans mount tomorrow, and the bottom one ill have my mechanic do), valve cover, coil pigtails, and cleaned out the battery terminals. All those wires were so baked fcs! It took me longer to change the pigtails than changing the rest of the stuff lol. Also i didn't listen to you when you said to buy the hose first lol. Mine almost snapped in half no matter how hard i tried not to break it. I have it taped with electrical tape until the hose arrives lol This video helped me greatly!

That's awesome man, congrats! It feels good getting that job done, and very smart to change the engine mounts out while they were there for the taking! And thanks for leaving the comment with the torque specs, many will find that very useful when they start their own valve cover job. I plan on doing the other engine mounts next year. Also, check the valve cover over the next week for any oil leaks or loose bolts! 😉

I used a bad torque wrench and accidentally broke the first 10mm bolt to fasten the valve cover. I want to remove the broken bolt, but I can’t drill straight down because the intake manifold is in the way. Do you have a video that shows how to detach this part? I found your video to remove and reinstall the air intake system, but it didn’t include the manifold. Thanks for these videos!

Hi Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your bolt snapping. Unfortunately we don't have a video on how to remove the intake manifold yet. You could get a grinder and grind a slot on the top of the bolt and use a flathead screwdriver and try to back it out of the hole. Cover the entire engine with a towel so no metal pieces get inside the engine first! And spray the stud with some WD-40 or PB Blaster to help loosen it up too. Good luck! 🤞

When I tried to take off the pcv hose, the hose broke, which I expected. However, the nubs the new one would go onto came with the hose, they were stuck together and now have snapped off with the old pcv hose. I don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated, thanks. I think the nub is the pcv valve, but both valves have broke off, even the one in the manifold.
@TrickShiftGarage
@TrickShiftGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Wow! Never seen that one before. I would try to look into a small rubber grommet that would fit into the opening in the intake manifold, then a metal fitting that would go snugly into that grommet and stick out so you can put the PCV hose back over it. The PCV valve is in the valve cover so you just need to replace the PCV and you should be fine I think. Whatever you end up doing, make sure there are no air leaks on either side of the PCV hose because it could throw a check engine light or cause the engine to run rough. Hope this helps, good luck!

Well, there isn't any oil in spark plug holes anymore, and I haven't noticed any oil leaking out the sides of the engine either. However, I have noticed a small amount of oil residue around the PCV valve on the cover, so maybe that's the flaw you're referring to? 🤔 I haven't heard of this in the aftermarket valve covers before now, but if that's the case, I would go with the Nissan OEM one for peace of mind. Hopefully, it's not too pricey, lol.

Hey Boss! Unfortunately yes, you have to apply permetex in the corners of the valve cover since they're 90 degree corners because oil leaks could develop there. I'd check the corners of the valve cover for leaks, if it does start leaking, you'll have to take the valve cover back off to apply the permetex. Do you think oil build up in the tubes would cause a misfire?
@TrickShiftGarage
@TrickShiftGarage Жыл бұрын
Yes, it definitely could cause a misfire. What happens is the oil acts as a conductor (through the carbon matter in the oil) and that could lead to high voltage arcing inside the spark plug wells. So basically the electricity that was meant to go to the spark plug escapes through the oil leading to a misfire condition. Hope this helps PV! Thanks for watching! 👍
