Dr. Dave - My background is in engineering and it's great to see your mechanical explanations for "medical" problems. My wife suffers from a recurring inflammation in the second metatarsal and I do leather crafting as a hobby, including making custom sandals. My goal is to make the most comfortable shoes for her possible, but also be something stylish. As such and realizing I am not a medical professional, I plan to watch your videos and incorporate the information you share into my designs. Thanks and keep the videos coming!

Thanks for such an easy to understand, informational, common sense video! I have Plantar Fasciitis and now I see that I need to support my arch, instead of using those stupid gel heel pads.

Love your vids. I did notice audio distortion in my headphones and thought you might consider investing in a better quality microphone. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for the comment. I'm simply using my iPhone. Recently switched to a iPhone 13 - I think that was the issue.

I have suffered with this problem most of my adult life. I had custom orthotics made many years ago. My shoe size used to be a size 10 and 1/2. Now it is a size 13. So my feet over time have flattened out and I think my orthotics no longer fix the mechanical issue any more. Great informational video. Thank you.

Paul Have you had your orthotics redone recently? I was a dance teacher and had to have mine redone every 5 to 8 years. I did have to quit teaching after 25 years as my spurs were so painful.

Great informative video. Would like to point out that buying sneakers with a much more flexible sole has alleviated foot pain I have had.

Dr. Dave, this is the best video on the cause and solution on Plantar Fasciitis on KZbin. But I have another question that I was hoping you can address through another video. It seems that Plantar Fasciitis effects middle aged and older people, like many other ailments. Once the pain and inflammation subsides are there exercises that one can do to strengthen the foot ligaments so that people are not so dependent on arch supports? Not trying to eliminate arch supports entirely, just trying to rejuvenate the foot to more like it was before the middle age breakdown.

Terry: Your best bet is to seek out a good physical therapist. There are different exercises that you can do depending on what you might be lacking in. A good PT should be able to figure that out and give you an appropriate plan that will work for you. Whether or not you will need to continue to use arch supports might depend on what they find. I really appreciate your comment. All the best.

My feet are so flat and I have arch supports in all my shoes, I had one custom made orthotic but they are so expensive. I certainly know when I’ve not been using them.

30 years ago I could not tolerate custom orthotics. In the last year and a half I have gotten the plantar fasciitis as well as an Achilles issue. I am presently attempting to use cork insoles that were given to me by aPodiatrist and they are hurting my arches … usually I just get heel pain, but I started having front foot pain, which she said must be the sneakers being too old. I’ve tried for over a week to wear these insoles and they are killing my arches and then the heels. They are pushing too much into the arch. At first they were OK and were helping my right ankle not lock up but the stabbing heel pain is too much. And my arches are a wreck at the moment. How can you adjust cork insoles to take the pressure off the arch? I have never been able to tolerate hardly any support.

I have high arch feet and hallux limitus. I’ve been wearing custom orthotics form many years which helps with my big toe problem but especially for plantar fasciitis. For the last few months one foot that has bad alignment that can’t be properly corrected anymore because It can’t bear the arch support. I have had 3 pairs of orthotics made lately and adjustments done to them but I still can’t wear an orthotic on that foot anymore. After seing 3 different podiatrists I am hoping you might have solution.

I have always walked around barefoot or in socks all seasons of the year. I am 55 and just this year I have bad PF on my left foot only. I am about 50/50 with active and sitting. If I were to wear arch supports will I ever get back to walking barefoot?

Do doctors still cut the plantar "tendon" to alleviate plantar fasciitis? My foot is sore to the touch right where a bone spur would be from plantar fasciitis and I might go see A Dr.
