Using that much grease on the axle splines will have you without brakes again in no time. As soon as the shoes and drum get hot it's going to be all over them. A light coat is all that is needed.

I love Honda. They are dead nuts reliable, mostly due to their simplicity. That being said, their drum brakes. Wow. What a hassle. I don't think I have ever purchased a used Honda ATV where the drum brakes worked even a little. If you ride in areas with a lot of mud/water, you need to either do a disc brake conversion or learn to ride without brakes and just using gearing. Working on a 2003 450 S that I just bought. Rear shows no signs of life. Up front, all 4 wheel cylinders were frozen solid. I have the front brakes functioning now (waiting on new shoes). On to the rear I guess. Thanks for the video!

great video, well though out...however I will add the shaft that controls the shoe movement will and can get stiff almost seizing up if not cleaned and lubricated, Ive ran into this on several machines. if it does not move freely, the control arm will have to be removed and the shaft knocked out, cleaned up and greased before the brakes are installed

I cannot for the life of me getting the axel hub nut off. I've hit it with wd40 and penetrating oil, even tried applying heat for a little bit. I currently have both back wheels off and have a crowbar bracing the other side so the shaft cannot turn. Rather sure the breaks are seized up as I cannot rotate the shaft by hand. Either that or the bearings have seized? I can't tell until I can get that hub nut off. Any suggestions?

My drum brake cover will not slide back on the brakes were seized prior to new brakes I tried putting on. Please help
@RanchLife-dg1in
@RanchLife-dg1in 3 жыл бұрын
It is possible the cover was damaged when it was removed. This would prevent it from sliding back on. It is also possible that the drum is not completely seated over the brake pads; make sure that putting the brake wires back on is the last thing you do. Check the brake lever to make sure it is not seized too. These wear out after a while and do need replaced.

good vid but.... you start off stating that your dust cover seal is shot and I was expecting you would show the install of a new seal.

@@justinlantz6887 to replace the seal, you will need to just pop it out using a large socket that fits around the edge. And grease and replace it in reverse order

It’s fools errand if you ride hard trails. I’ve sealed the drum housing with RTV and still within half a day riding the drum is pooched again. It’s too bad there isn’t a hydraulic disc brake conversion for around $300. The mechanical cable disc conversion is just slightly less useless than the drum, but a hydraulic kit could be the ticket - even if only operable by hand lever and you lose the foot brake pedal

To much grease. Any grease left beyond the point where you need a lubricant, will attract dust and can cause that dust/sand to migrate onto the face of seals or bearings. Just a very thin layer will work just fine. Just saying.

With so much grease on the inside aren't you concerned about grease getting on the brake shoes?

I just dont understand why super atv or highlifter have not made a conversion for the 2014-2019 foremans and ranchers yet. There is a massive market for them but they are just dragging ass on it.

They are still gonna go rite out, the only way to fix that is to actually drill large holes on the bottom of the drum cover so it doesn’t hold sand and water in the brakes

If you service the boot correctly and do it right, the chances of this happening are much lower, and it is also important to take out the drain plug after each ride in water/mud to make sure there is nothing in there. Keeping the seals intact is also very important. Expect more videos on that and other things this summer.
