Had a huge barking issue with my dog while alone in the crate. Tried literally EVERYTHING (except meds) until I watched the first separation anxiety video you put out. Crate and bark collar worked wonders. Now my dog just sleeps and has learned to be calm in the crate. Great video as always. You are helping so many dogs and owners. Thank you so much!!!!!

Totally agree. I found that after put my dog in crate for several times when we were shopping or visiting friends for 1-2 hours, her mild seperation anxiety vanished. We rescured her, we did not do it on the first day, or even first month. During the first 3 months, we put some crate training on her, with positive rewarding. She soon realized that crate is a safe and good choice. No body can hurt her, harass her there and she even can enjoy some best bones in there! Very soon she would like to go to crate when she felt things were getting complicated and she cannot handle it. Then we gave her exercise in the day time, and put her in the crate after dinner, go out for 1-2 hours. Not everyday, but 1 time every week, or even two weeks. She was tired and no other choice, but sleep easily. After about 2 months such crate & leaving, we gave her free when we were out. She obviously felt anxious again and easily bark when stragers apporach to our door, such as delivery man. But she figured it out eventually we will always come back, and her best choice is having a nap on our bed where we usually would not let her get on to... FYI, we walk her about 1.5 - 2 hours daily, with obdience training during the walking. She is a 50 lb, 2y old half GSD.

My friend's GSD/Malamute destroyed one of those wire kennels, as mentioned, and then did $1500 in damage to the apartment, as mentioned, so he went back to the shelter. She didn't crate her other dog while at work because of the barking and whining. Needs to watch this video...

Listen to what he says... he is a REAL working pro with dogs that are serious breeds (GSD, Malinois, etc.) and is not 'baby-talking' dogs. He really does understand dogs. A top-level rehabilitator of troubled dogs says that ALL dogs need 'structure, boundaries, and limitations'. See the connection ? A dog is a 'lower animal'... very different from humans. Crates are like prong collars in that they re what we do FOR a dog and not TO him...

I use raw bones (mostly frozen) as well as frozen Kongs as a reward and almost always start with them in the crate. It associates the crate with good things and recreational (stress relieving) chewing. I leave the door open often as well for this purpose. It helps with anxiety too because to the dog, it's his den.
@nancytaylor91804 ай бұрын
So this is why all of my dogs have not had this issue. I crate train all my pups and even later when I start to leave them out, I restrict them to a small area. This expands or decreases as we progress. The crate is very much still in play as they learn to be out alone, sometimes they would get left in, sometimes not. If I had a camera I believe all my dogs just sleep when I'm not home. Likely on my bed if the indent in the middle is any indication. I've always understood that their crate must be a good thing. I've had a strong calf crate up for almost 30 years now. If I have two, I put up crate #2. My adult dogs don't get put in the crate unless there is a really good reason,, but they will open the door themselves to go in for a nap. Even my wild pup Star (GSD/Dob pup I rescued at 2 weeks old) who took 2+ years before she could be left home alone outside of the crate, was excellent in the house alone once we transitioned.

I have a 1 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback and because of COVID I’ve always been home with him. I’m now having to return to my office two days a week. But because of my commute I’m gone for about 11 hours and I don’t want to leave him in the crate that long. I haven’t noticed any fearful or anxious behavior in him in general but he is very attached to me. The other day he started digging under the fence gate and destroyed the bottom of a couple of fence pickets. That’s the first time he’s done anything close to that. Do you have any recommendations? Do you think it’s ok to leave him in the crate that long? Thanks so much! I really enjoy your videos!

In case Haz does not respond, I am going to say for a 1 year old dog, he will survive 11 hrs in a crate. MUST receive exercise before and after that 11 hrs...It is a MUST that somehow that dog gets a break from the crate in the middle of that 11 hr period. If you keep him in the yard for a work day, expect him to escape if he is digging under the fence. Hope all goes well, not easy making that transition. Also consider testing increasing the time in crate incrementally. Its been a month since your comment, how is it going?
@ashleyreyes35812 жыл бұрын
@@millerj.8448 thanks for your reply! He’s actually stopped digging. He was only doing it in one particular area and I put some barricades so he would stay away. He hasn’t tried it anywhere else and I’ve since removed the barricades and he hasn’t tried again. Let’s hope that continues.

👍 , just one thing about the bathroom following; that is a normal pack type behavior for all dogs, it’s a “I’ll watch your back while you poop” kinda thing. Nothing wrong with that. Now following you Everywhere, That Is a Problem. My boy doesn’t follow anyone anywhere unless I tell him to heel, except for the bathroom that is. He’s always there waiting for me. (No separation anxiety problems at all). Mostly just like to do his own thing, watching, patrolling and guarding the house and property. Just a good guard dog.
@accufab3 жыл бұрын
So my 3 year old Field Labrador loves his crate. Has separation anxiety. Is highly exercised both mentally and physically. Does field work, nosework and obedience. What you don’t address in your video is what am I to do if I follow everything you state in your video, and the result is that if I leave him in the crate alone, he will be extremely anxious, stress, pant, drool, turn in circles, whine, shake, urinate, and this behavior will escalate the longer I leave him. Are you saying I allow him to practice this behavior? This behavior seems to be at least partly genetic as many in his litter have the same issue. The information on treating this issue runs from punishing the anxious behavior, to slow desensitization that might take months. I’m not convinced it’s an easy simple behavior to fix. If it was I’d have accomplished it long ago. I think I’ve tried everything, and I’m not a dog humanizing, this is my fur baby dog owner.

Sounds like the right step now for you is to build up duration in staying in the crate by himself. Check out this video, but ignore the wire crate and puppy stuff. He has a good plan on adding duration. If you add this to what Shield K9 says it should work.kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKStl5urgbKprbc

i have a question about my dogs eating, i currently have a 7 month female German Shepherd. i feed her twice daily, and she has high food drive, loves food. recently her first meals she doesnt seem interested in eating all of it like she used to, she will come back couple hours later and want to eat it, sometimes not wanting to eat at all. and the feeding times have been the same. when i feed her in the evening she has no problems. She gets good exercise every day. I havent changed the amount of food ( 6 cups daily ) in quite a while and she's at a good weight (50-55lbs). Is this normal for females at this stage? Also i have not changed her dog food either. not spayed as well.
@technoboy183 жыл бұрын
Spoke to a vet recently. He said food shouldn't be left for a dog to eat whenever he/she wants it. It should be given to dog and removed if he doesn't eat it all. This ensures dog feeds on time and doesn't just have food there laying about. So if he doesn't eat it all.. stays hungry.. learns that food just won't be there.

I have two gsds they both started this around 8-9 months old. They still do this little over a year. I feed them during training (2xs a day) and then leave food out for dinner. I don’t recommend free feeding all the time but that’s what’s working for us for now.
