This product is junk. The inserts are a soft brasslike material that strips out & the screws are stupidly short. The price is insane $6 USD per insert. Wooden dowels, Rawl plugs or just filling with epoxy & redrilling would work much better.

Glued-in golf tees work great, as do wooden dowels. Since I don't have any of the former and don't want to bother drilling larger holes for the latter unless the joint is critical, I often just stuff the holes with toothpicks and put the screws right back in, instead. :) If this method doesn't work just as well, I've never been able to tell. The toothpicks are crushed into the sides, filling every gap, and act as an anchor for the original screw, even without glue. They're actually pretty tough, being made of hardwood species or bamboo, so the screw theoretically has just as much "bite" as before. I've never had to make such repairs twice, in any event. Maybe I just have really good toothpicks. There is nothing wrong with products like the ZZem, of course, but it's kind of overkill for an interior door that was originally installed with short screws that only go into the thin jamb (and really doesn't need any more than that). 3 inches goes through the jamb, jack stud (or trimmer), and halfway through the king stud--that's great for a strong, secure entry door (I use screws this long on my entry door hinges and strike plates, myself), but totally unnecessary for an interior door (unless it's for a panic room!). That said, in a case like this one, sometimes longer screws are all it takes to make the repair, provided that the jack stud is in line with the stripped hole. A 1.5" screw or longer (say at least 2" to be safe, since the jamb might be shimmed) should do the trick. Failing that, perhaps a larger (fatter) screw might work, depending on how badly chewed up the hole is. There are many simple ways to fix simple problems.

This is an expensive way to solve the problem. The door jamb (frame) is only about 3/4" thick and is easily damaged. Buy 3-1/2" screws of the proper diameter (the same diameter as the short screws that you are replacing) and using a power drill, screw the hinge to the framing behind the jamb. This repair will cost about $1 for the screws as opposed to nearly $25 for the solution you mention.

I do appreciate this guy posting the video though as it led me here to your comment. seems like a decent product and if things got bad enough I might use it (like if the 3 inch holes stripped, but simply using much longer screws can also do the trick if you all had were 1 inch screws there

I checked Amazon and these ARE REALLY expensive. My big concern is that one must drill such a large hole and then screw in the anchor thing manually. Even in the video it appears that he's struggling with getting it in. What happens if one can't do it and the anchor gets stripped and common as I envision happening to me, one gets stuck trying to hold up a six panel solid oak door with one hand so it doesn't fall down and kill everything in sight?

Thanks SO much for the video, it helped a lot. Since there’s a spare in there, do you think it’s smart to use it on the door side to stabilize it? My landlord tried to have some cheap guys quick-fix it so the door itself might need some extra support. Just wondering if you think it’s necessary. It seems to be alright tho so I suppose I could leave it for now unless it becomes a problem later. Also just so you know, the door itself is pretty light. It was just shoddy work on the frame side that caused the hanging so it’s probably fine

I had an issue with an ENTIRE upper hinge. The entire set.of screws were stripped. This is a very heavy solid wood door and the previous owner/carpenter probably never anticipated this weight on those wood screws. This door is larger than the other bedroom doors (handicap accessible wide?). Anyway, this kit worked like a champ- three of these and the door is hung well. There's a small amount of strike on the other frame, but I think the guy never put the door together just right. It's a minimal annoyance, but I don't usually slam the door anyway.

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. It’s very possible & will mainly depend on the design of your door. If it’s hollow, you may need different anchors/plugs. If your door is solid wood, these will work great. 😎👍🔧🔩

Excellent Instructions. Why would you need to enlarge the screw holes, when all it was, was a striped screw? Don't you just replace the screws that was the problem from start? Then, as you did, tighten them, but Not Too Hard? This is a Formica Kitchen Cabinet Door. Should it close? If you have better suggestions, I would want to know, Thank You!

Just looked this up online the kit is $23.99. For under $10 you could buy a wooden dowel and wood glue and have it fixed in under 5 minutes. There is no need for a 3 inch brass sleeve that you put a 1 inch screw into. Sorry but don't waste your money on this product

As a carpenter of 40 years i can tell you rhere is always more than one way to skin a cat. Btw that "groove" is called a housing. Your way, may not be someone elses and doesnt make it wrong or right. Consult a profession for better advice. Mow you jave to adjust your striker. Incidently, "this portion of trim" is called a door stop. My way is a lot less expensive , quicker amd permanent. But that's my way, which is also the right way. If your not a carpenter, you wont be aware of the right way alternatives and be prone to buying fixes from manufacturers design to take as much money from you as possible.
