Thank you for this. I bought two canvases at michael's for next to nothing. I painted them already, but it's nice to know for future. I decoupaged over the tears on the canvas, making them a mixed media collage, so it also worked. But I will patch the back before I put them up for sale~! (New artist here and have my first show in a few weeks.)

HEY. Um so I got a hole in a canvas I already painted in and it'd be difficult to repaint it. Does the gesso dry clear? Or white? Or is there a different way I could fix my canvas without covering your what I've already painted?? I'm dying inside so please help me ;-; thank you
@sandrasvsa6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Most Gesso dries white but you can find Clear gesso also (Liquitex has a good one) its usually advertised on the container. What you can do is seal it on the back side only if all you have is white gesso, just have multiple coats and spread it in an area slightly bigger than the hole. I hope this helped! Goodluck!

Great video and it seems pretty easy for me. I have an old painting of me as a baby (it is approx 60 y/o). There is a tear in the canvas that I want to fix. The back should be pretty easy to fix and I can see myself doing it. I found the clear gesso and unprimed cotton canvas. Is that good or should I go with the canvas duck cloth? But I am afraid to do the front of the painting. How would I fix the tear to the front of the painting? I'm not that talented. Any suggestions?
@sandrasvsa4 жыл бұрын
yes ma'am. you can use any sturdy canvas-like material to patch. lay your canvas down on a clean flat surface, front side facing down and apply this method to the backside only. even few more layers of gesso can help do the trick! and be sure to let it dry before moving it 😊

Would this work if i just put paper on the back if I don't have canvas paper?
@sandrasvsa5 жыл бұрын
i don't think paper would be a great choice to hold it but maybe something thicker like poster board that can hold its shape well. or maybe even doing multiple layers of paper like papier-mache, it's definitely going to take trial & error bc i have not tried that method before. sorry i cant be much help other than that, if you choose either pls feel free to let me know how it worked for you!

This was very good, and I gave you a thumbs up...but not sure it will work for a 300 year old oil painting on very fragile canvas that's more like crisp paper now, and is tearing itself without being bumped. It's from the Dutch Golden Age. Think I'll need to call a conservation expert...it's unsigned, so not worth much, but I still really like it.

because gesso is a filling material in small portions, not for bonding. what you teach there is totally wrong! the canvas glued with gesso will come off quickly.. there are other adhesive materials. learn a little more and then you can give restoration lessons
@esepx7 ай бұрын
@@aalexart i am not giving restoration lessons, simply trying to educate myself, so i appreciate this conversation. I tried the video's method before reading your comment and was curious. I did it on a new painting with a small tear and the gesso seems to have sealed the patch well into place. I tried scratching the patch off after the gesso dried, and it held its position with no lifting off. Of course, a bigger hole and a more fragile canvas would not work with this method, and I can see why, but I found this a practical solution and hope you will not berate me for sharing this opinion as there is intention of annulling or arguing with the facts you have provided and I thank you for your insight.
