I was daily-ing a VC Valiant 225 with four barrel and long runner manifolds till recently - and swapped to twin 2bbls when I pulled the head to start matching ports on the HyperPak clone. Now with all the 2020/2021 restrictions, the daily is a Voyager and I'm wondering, will a Jeep 3.8 fit in the VC?

I am so glad you’re doing this, my grandfather passed down a 84 dodge he bought new and it has a 225 slant 6 in it. I got it and wanted more so I fabbed mounts from a factory ls mount and some solid dodge mounts and put a 5.3/4l60 in it. I almost had it done and decided it took to much away from the truck and I wanted the original slant 6 to stay so I pulled the ls out and right now the slant 6 is sitting in the engine bay but haven’t finished bolting it back in. I’m definitely planning on going to a power adder.

The last /6 I built: Stock bottom end with windage tray and Melling oil pump. Late model head to get rid of the spark plug tubes and also have hardened seats for unleaded gas. 340 vavle springs and the Mopar (Crane) .460 lift solid cam. Accel Super Coil, Offy 4 barrel manifold with a Holley 600. Mopar 6 into 1 header, single 3" exhaust through a Flowmaster muffler. Car sounded like a 340 at idle, ran hard for what it was and was great to open the hood when people didn't believe it was a /6.

I just bought a 85 D150 with a /6 and 833 OD. Really good shape except the bock is cracked. He didn’t have enough antifreeze in the mix when we had single digit temps in December. Shame too, starts right up and runs good. I’m swapping a 318 magnum in it in a couple months after I finish the rewiring my Ramcharger. Slowly both of them and my 340 duster (clone) will be swapped to 3G Hemis. Did a cam, headers and Offy 4 intake with a Holley 600 in a 71 Dart yrs ago. Ram 14.60s at LVMS during MATS.

Milling - IIRC, 120 thou is the heads limit, 90 thou on the block, and if you do, watch the the cam lift to make sure minimum .050 between open valve and piston at TDC. Parts - Clifford Repro HyperPak, Pacemaker tuned headers, Cox Bros make roller rockers for slants, and there's good pistons about. Someone was doing seven inch H-beam rods too for a while, which is the whole 198 rods in 225 block to bring the pistons up higher.

I learned how to wrench on cars working on a slant 6. Those are great engines with good longevity. You darn near have to beat them to death with a sledgehammer to make them quit. I still (after 60 years) have a lot of affection for early mopar cars. I am looking forward to see what you do to that little mill. I assume it's a 225 CI. They also made a 170 CI slant 6 for smaller cars like the old Dodge Lancer (60 & 61). Learning to work on stuff like the slant 6 led me eventually to get my Air Frame and Power Plant license to work on small aircraft as my 3rd and final career.

The Super Six 2bbl intakes can be two piece die cast aluminum top and bottom and what looks like resistance welded or the cast aluminum like featured on this engine. I cut the exhaust manifold outlet off and welded a 2 1/2 inch flange. This also isolated the intake from the exhaust manifold as well as having a 2 1/2 inch exhaust and that gave a seat of the pants feel increase in power. '74 Duster 904 with 2.71 gears.

I don't think so. By the time the Super Six was introduced in the USA all cars had to run on unleaded fuel because they were equipped with catalytic converters. Chrysler had offered the 2 barrel version for export but did not offer it in the US until the late 1970s or early 1980s because they preferred to sell the 318 V8 to those who needed more horsepower than the Slant Six could deliver.

@@1575murray All US cars made starting for the '73 model year had to have an EGR valve to reduce NOX emissions. I do not see an EGR valve on this engine. Maybe somebody put a '77 and later Super Six intake, carb, and air cleaner on an older Slant Six?

Chrysler and other auto companies induction hardened valve seats to make them last when lead was removed from gasoline. This head should have had hardened seats because only one seat was damaged. Induction hardening valve seats was only a surface treatment and after about 45 years of service, I do not think it would be unexpected for this process to start to fail.

from the looks of the exhaust valves, I'd take a really close look at the condition of the exhaust manifold. They're notorious for cracking (early ones are better) and judging by the looks of yours, I'd bet money on a cracked manifold or leaking flange gasket.

use the head as a mold in sand, and then aluminum-cast the head. Once its aluminum, then CROSS-flow it, ripping-out the distributor from the block and putting coils on each plug. The "slant" should cover a cross-flow header dumping straight down, but SPLIT, so you can have true duals, 1 per 3 cylinders, or have each 3 dumping directly into one of TWO turbos, so you can get 750Hp out of your "tower!" Each 3-fed-into-ONE of two turbos'll FEED lots of fuel & air into the OTHER 3 cylinders, so the OUTput from 1 group of 3 cylinders feeds the INPUT of the Next 3. The Output of the last 3, would, of course, feed the INPUT of the 1st 3. Richard, back in the 70s 6-cylinder stock cars used to make 450-500+ horsepower, full-race. Although Inline sixers are not raced before the V-8s {--that I know of}, anymore, WHY can't we almost duplicate the 4L Aussie-Ford "Barra" which can make 1100Hp? I feel you definitely can get 750+ Hp out of your tower, and it will NOT have to be built "full-race, but will be "streetable." Aussie-Mopar had a "Hemi" on some mid-70s 6 cylinders, although they were NOT "slanters". Could an Aussie-Hemi-inline 6 head { head done/cast in alloy }, be PUT on a slanter-block? WHY hot-rod with "Australian parts"? Well shortly, folks can 3-D those parts and better, so if you want, show us what COULD be done. You should REALLY "Blow our minds" and 3-D Aston-Martin DB-6,{--the more popular model made after Aston quit making the Bond-made-famous DB-5} alloy 6-cylinder heads, or TVR would make their own DOHC straight-6 via copying/cutting-up 4-valve Suzuki motorcycle heads from Suzuki motorcycle 4 cylinders to "work" on a 4L DOHC inline 6 of TVR's own, or maybe Aussie-Mopar had a DOHC head to run against the "Barra", or, 3-D the 3.5L-4L Maserati-alloy DOHC head{--from the 40s - the 60s } to fit, perfectly, on a "slant"-6 alloy block. I'll BET there are several 3-D Replicator firms that would WANT you to "3-D" hot-rod parts on your show, and that'd put your GREAT Videos WAY beyond what anyone Else is doing, but that'd Just like you, Richard,--you're Not going to do what everybody ELSE is doing,--you're BETTER than that,--you're "Da BEST!" =

It's always a laugh to watch first timers go to lift the head off a Slant - done it enough to use an engine crane :D Now it's apart, can I suggest the Clifford Performance Reproduction HyperPak inlet manifold, and the Pacemaker 'Tuned Length' extractors. Yes, you can skim the head and the block, bore it, offset grind it, add a cam,... but none of that matters as much as making it breathe.

Looking at the combustion chamber shape, there is no real quench. So zero decking does not really help much ... Yes, compression does help for sure, but taking enough metal off the deck to get to zero with OEM pistons is kinda chasing a ghost ... Better to go aftermarket pistons and leave the deck thick enough to hold the bolts for boost ... The 225 is still a small engine. Almost wish you could grab one of their (Mopar's) big flathead six's like the original 413 twin carb truck motor and do the same to it 🙃

I have gotten interested in the 6cyl engines, after seeing the 300ford with Cleveland heads, cut and braised, that car was beating V8 cars! I want to build a Chevy version, maybe use LS-1 heads, custom cam of course, braise the deck re drill if needed, but just buying a vortec 4200 would be much cheaper!

Everyone blames the lack of power on the head having both ports on the same side . It would be interesting to see an aftermarket cross flow head shoot out before and after. You'll have to go with a Ford six for that test though.

I see Uncle Tony has a video about that too, but I haven't watched it yet. Sounds ominous. Whatever it is, I'm confident SEMA can get it defeated or improved.

I read an article from some BS "union of scientists" made a post not too long ago written from a Clean Air Act anylist stating to abolish all modifications and sale of parts from public roads and restricting (to the effect of) sanctioned racing only, basically in a nutshell. We all know it won't be just pollution control equipment either I'm sure they'll try to tie in other parts of cars saying it affects fuel economy and other crap too. Of course we have stupid doughheads that blatenly shit tune their vehicles to make them run like crap and blow their shit all over the place. That doesn't help either. The EPA is trying to lobby against the RPM act so they can completely control our vehicles.

Offenhauser 5041 intake with a pair of Holley EFI 2300's, dual exhaust manifolds and a pair of tiny turbos off of a Fiesta ST. It makes no sense, costs too much, it's perfect.

that head was designed for "leaded" gas, if run on "unleaded", the valves seats will go away, either harder valve seats are needed or lead substitute must be put into each and every time gas is put in the tank.

new seats cure that-and I would think slants from the 70s had hardened seats

That head is a pre-1968. After 1968, they went to what was called the peanut head. It didn’t have the spark plug tubes in it. So, those valves and seats were meant for leaded gas. Also, if you have 5 core plugs on the driver side, that is a later block. If you have three, that would be an earlier block probably matching the head. At some point somebody’s either swapped the head or the entire engine.

@@RichMander1 Yes, it's an older head. It's also not an emissions era head as it doesn't have a port for a thermostatic vacuum valve so it's pre-EGR too.

Broken pistion rings are mildly common in these things, my 1969 had a broken ring, presumptuously from factory. The og owner said it had a littel miss and shake when he bought it off the floor never could figure it out. Hopeing to get comp. up to 9.1:1.

PLEASE!!! When you start your dyno pulls on this engine, PLEASE start them down in the 1000 rpm (or less) range! Most stock and mildly built leaners are all in by 4500, and a 2500-4500 pull won't show much!!!

What about fuel injection? There's a company called Gill Welding and Fabricating who makes a multiport intake. I've also talked to someone in australia who converted there's to coil pack ignition and if you want to test a roller cam LSM Engineering might have a few blanks left. Either way you go I hope it helps build the slant community. Then maybe people will finally start making more performance parts lol.
