How to fix the noisy jammed pump on the Zojirushi hot water boiler

If you press the dispense button and the water doesn't come out but the pump is making a grinding noise, this likely means that the pump is jammed by scale deposits. This video shows how to fix this problem and get the water boiler working again.

Thank you for this video; you just saved me about $200 USD. The irony is that this was caused by cleaning the machine using their official citric acid cleaning kit. The most difficult part was getting that initial security torx screw to come off. It took multiple flathead screw drivers, but I finally unscrewed it. I decided to replace that security torx screw with a regular screw so that I don't have to spend another 20 minutes trying to get it removed if I ever have to open the boiler up again.

I had the same problem and your video helped me fix it. I shook the pot with the water still inside taking the chance it might allow some water to pass through. It stopped making the noise and the water that passed had black water filter particles causing the obstruction. I will save your video in case I need to do a more thorough cleaning at some time in the future.

Exactly what I need to do. It was time to clean the boiler, I waited too long. When the pump started acting up, I did not know what problem was until I found this video. Thank you. Done, completed. The only problem I ran into was that my model did not give access to the screw for removing the pump assembly--I thought I would have to remove the entire circuit board assembly to gain access to the pump holding screw. I tried taking the third screw off with the screw driver sideways and it worked--I did not have to remove the circuit side of the pump. There was so much crud, no wonder it couldn't pump.

3 years later, your video saved our boiler! Ours also had the pump jammed because I was trying to do some serious descaling with citric acid. For my model (CD-LC440), I couldn't figure out how to detach the outer shell which was held in place at the spout, but we freed up enough room so we could detach the pump and clean it. A lot trickier but it's fixed now!

These in instructions worked great. I have a newer model (CV-DCC40) that is not quite as user repairable. The screw holding the pump is not as easy to reach as in the video. However, your guide was close enough to make the repair. The official citric acid cleaning solution also clogged the pump up in my situation, similar to comments below. Thank you very much. I just fix my Zpjirushi CD-CLF30 water boiler and warmer from your excellent tutorial video. I have exact the same problem with noisy pump without water flowing out due to water mineral dust stuck inaround the thermal pump area. It is my own careless without inserting the little metal filter back after cleaning several time. This little metal filter is very import and must be inserted back after each cleaning. I will rate your video with 5 stars.

I purchased this tea pot a few months ago I started brew some herb teas and because of that the tea pot water indicator got stained which I didn't realize it can happened but everytime I boiled water the previous tea stained residue came up throuh the pump I couldn't drink the water I tried wash and rused many times but no matter how many times I wash and rised it wont get remove the tea stained I think this video helped me to breaking down the tea pot and I will needed to clean that clear water indicator like you did.

I had the vaccum insulated one. Amazing design but the pump could easily be gravity fed. Another pro and con is the 750w heating element for a 4L kettle, saves money but overworked and burnt out. The worst thing about these are the non stainless boiling interior and even worse is the plastic degrading and flaking behind the metal plate in the lid, along with the seal. I used a standard stainless steel lid instead and worked okay but created rust on the top of the aluminum water chamber.... just a bundle of health hazards, but you can down 8L of tea a day to make up for it lol

I made the mistake of pouring out hot water at the end of the night instead of waiting for it to cool. When I turned it back water from the pump came out and burned my hand! There should be a stopper when it's turned off to prevent this from happening. Was wondering where all the excess water came from (cause I emptied the tank part) and this video confirms how much excess water can be stored in the pump mechanism. The manual says to pour it out in a specific way so that's where I messed up, I should have read the manual better : (

Thanks. I fixed my pot with your video instruction on how to open it up. Mine was slightly different as I have two screws to take out the base plate. My tube and pump were all clean as I believe I used Citric Acid to do self cleaning first but that didn't work. However, it was the spout assembly that you didn't do was dirty with some scale and rusty stuff that I flushed with nitric acid and water hose. It works any way. Thanks again.

Make sure the flexible connectors at both ends of the plastic tube are fully seated.

Mine leaks at bottom after a heavy citric cleaning. And water is not contacting to heater element. HH error displays despite lots of water in pot. Is this also scale pieces clogging something?

It's best to remove calcium buildup from any moving parts. You can try gently scraping it off or, if the scale doesn't come off, use citric acid solution to loosen it up first.

I used citric acid a few times which helped remove some, but not all, of the deposits. Note that this boiler has a special mode for descaling: press and hold the reboil button until it enters that mode. Some of the scale deposits will separate from the walls and the sludge may clog the pump again, so be ready to repeat the procedure from this video.

Please use the Citric acid cleander: CD-K03E-JU or CD-KB03-J ( I guess these two are the same), frm Amazon or directly from Zojirushi web. I work nicely.

Yes, you need to disconnect the wires in order to remove the cover. It's just two screws - no big deal.

My Zojurushi leaks at the bottom. Not sure why? It was constantly reboiling the water and water was just leaking out. Do you know why that might occur?

I suggest disassembling the boiler as shown in the video and checking the water connections around the pump. Perhaps one of the hoses is torn, or maybe a plastic connector has a crack.

So an update. hoses are in tact....but I noticed one area where there is a lot of rust and calcium build up...but I can't find a leak...not sure what to do. What do you think?

I think I figured it out....turns out the inner cap isn't completely tight....so when the water condensates if the inner cap is not tight....then it will start leaking water......I might just order a new water boiler inner cap. Thanks for the video!

What can't you flood the pump chamber with strong citric acid?

That is an option, but when it gets to a clogged pump you may need to wait for days or even weeks until all that scale is dissolved. The video gives you a much faster option.

In my case it was the cleaning process that caused this. There was calcium built up under the fairly useless mesh filter; I used the official Zojirushi citric acid cleaning kit which loosened up that calcium and got it stuck in the pump chamber. When I took it apart; I was surprised that it was just a tiny piece of calcium smaller than a grain of rice that was preventing the water from running, and causing that annoying sound.

Salts dissolved in water precipitate and form scale on the walls of the boiler. Some of that scale falls off and manages to pass through the filter. Over time those hard particles can accumulate in the water pump and clog it. This problem should not occur if you descale the boiler periodically.

Nothing should leak if you put things together correctly. There's no sealant between the rubber tubes and the water pump - just make sure everything is wiped clean and dry before reattaching.
