Exelent video! Thank you very much for this. I have N63 engine, recently installed catless downpipes and I can hear my wastegates rattling now 🤦🏻♂️ Thanks to your video, I will try replace my wastegates. Can I ask for a link where I can buy those wastegates? Thanks

I get infrequent codes but my N20 makes a whining sound at boost. I don’t think it’s the timing chain, as it makes no noise at idle.

I posted on Facebook about the marking to locate the arm and there was a comment that more needed to be done. Part of comment included ( You need to tune the rods to correct specs. Using the marking will never be exact. Two or three turns too many is enough to reduce the power of your turbos. Use a vaccume with a gauge to set the correct) Not sure I need to do more? Mounting auxiliary equipment after buy a reman engine from BMW.
@bimmer.doctorАй бұрын
I have never had a problem as the DME can adjust the wastegates independently to hit the boost it’s trying to target. If you want to take it a step further, you can use a hand vacuum pump to check that the wastegate closes.

@@bimmer.doctor thank you for the reply, progress is a bit slow, trying to figure what part to replace from the donor engine and which ones are useable. But still advancing!

Where do you get the new retaining pins for the bushings?
@bimmer.doctor2 ай бұрын
My supplier gives them to me with the arm, but you could just as easily use a cotter pin instead. Anything to prevent it from moving should do.

Install a thin wave spring washer in the shaft and flapper? Correct me if I am wrong. Rattling is due to the worn shaft and flapper that when it is not closed, it is rattling. As long as certain vac is applied and the flapper can seal up the wastegate, there is no code (30FF) or performance issue, right? Even we can hear the rattling (during idle or when turbo is not used), if we adjust the rod (correctly so to the right Hg), flapper can ALWAYS seal up the wastegate, am I correct?
@bryanderksen44488 ай бұрын
The adjuster rod isn't the issue. When the bushing is worn, the flapper doesn't always lay flat over the hole in the turbine, allowing for boost loss. Adjusting the rod will change the pressure on the flapper arm but if the flap is out of alignment to the hole, boost leaks occur. I had the same issue on my N54. Under medium or heavy throttle it seemed that the rod was more able to pin the flapper shut to facilitate the boost demand, and it didn't leak. The problem occurred most often during part-throttle or throttle adjustment situations when the boost levels were lesser and the actuator rod wasn't applying as much pressure on the flapper arm, allowing it to move around more randomly. For me it was adjusting from 110kmh-130kmh-110kmh when moving with the ebb and flow of freeway traffic. Suddenly the dreaded half-engine symbol would appear (reduced power) and the wastegates would immediately be sucked open, eliminating any boost. That's annoying and also dangerous when you're in the fast lane with all the big dogs.

i have loads of rattle when off throttle but put foot back on throttle it goes away. guessing its the wastegate
@bimmer.doctorАй бұрын
Yeah, that’s exactly what happens because when you’re on the throttle, the wastegate is closed so it won’t rattle, but off throttle it’s open so the flap is rattling

Yeah, this is the fix. My 2015 X5 has been getting drivetrain malfunction events, with a "low boost" code. Wastegate rattles up and down a crazy amount. Sounds like i have to drop the subframe... or the whole engine to fix this. Sigh.... For those wondering, it wasn't the bpv or the MAF. Dang wastegate. I've also replaced the ewg, and that kept me going for another 2 years without codes.
@robertmassmann228Ай бұрын
Well I got the waste gates out as well as the bushings. End up measuring the grove width to determine the drill size diameter, although even after grinding, it is still hard the tell where the pin center really is?
