FYI…that ignition switch isn’t supposed to come apart. That was a huge recall issue back in the day. The aluminum part and the white plastic part are all one switch. Take out the two screws right above where you pulled on the harness and the switch can be replaced for about $12. What you did will stop working again after some vibration from driving it. You may also start having issues with the car shutting off or the radio stopping to work, etc.

23 June 2022: Thank you so much for this turn signal trouble shooting video. My trim panels were a little different than shown. My ’88 convertible did not have a metal panel under the plastic trim panel, but it may have simply been missing. I cleaned the contacts, which looked good by the way, and reassembled. It did not fix the issue, but I notice the switch mechanism was loose and would not snap together tightly. When I pushed it into place it worked. Now, with a few zip ties around the switch mechanism and the column, it is fixed! And like others, my HVAC blower motor and the top retraction mechanism is working again too. Whoohooo! Thanks again!

Blinkers stopped working entirely, no blinker lights on dash, but hazards were good. Ended up being a loose wire in the hazard wire harness. I believe it’s either the light blue or yellow/orange wire. They didn’t appear loose at all, but after pressing them in firmly (didn’t appear to actually do anything with the naked eye), my blinkers worked again. Edit: went out again, ended up being the ignition switch.

Im having this same issue but even trying those wires behind the hazards I still cant get them to come on
@von970 Жыл бұрын
@@paulzimmerman1227 so my blinkers did end up going out again, I didn’t bother messing with it after that. I don’t know too much about wiring, but my car wound up dying on me as I was driving on the freeway, which signaled me to check my ignition switch. It was pulling apart so I replaced that and somehow my signals worked again. My issue with the blinkers were no signal light on the dash, and no signal. Hazards worked, sometimes only one side of the hazard signal on the dash would come on, but both hazards were flashing. Replaced the ignition switch and now both blinkers are functional and the light comes on on the dash as well. I would suggest checking your ignition switch. With that said though I’m by no means a mechanic, this is just what I’ve encountered.

@@von970 After days of sitting in that drivers seat and pondering what it could have been…I finally got somewhere. I had bought this car second hand and while I was working on it I noticed on the fuse panel it looked like one of the fuses burnt up so I took my voltage tester and tested the fuse that goes to my turn signal and…no power. I just temporarily hooked a jumper up to see if it would work and it did. Looks like a new fuse panel for me
@von970 Жыл бұрын
@@paulzimmerman1227 glad you got that sorted out! I appreciate the update. Let me know how that works out when you replace the panel.

If you're having trouble getting it back together, use some grease to adhere the little metal ball to the spring socket of the slider and fiddle with the slider in the ignition till it stays in place, some grease may help. Then locate the forward retaining finger for the contact rail block up in the steering column housing, its the one closest to the firewall to the right, bend outward slightly. Then insert the rail block without the electrical connector with the rearward metal fingers first and then rock it forward into the front fingers. Then use a pair of channel locks and grip the right rear finger and right front finger, while keeping pressure on the rail block, squeeze the channel locks to bend the front finger back in place.

If the plastic breaks or cracks, it probably won't snap back together. You can try to use a couple of zip ties to keep it together.
@caseygtr7 ай бұрын
@@KarzKreated I got it back in, had to get creative, I updated my original comment. I had to slightly bend one of the forward retaining fingers, it would not go back in without this maneuver. Sorry for my earlier comment, I was frustrated. Thank you, this did fix my blinker and HVAC system, I would have wasted money on a replacement switch.

Will this affect the reverse lights not working as well and the air conditioning not blowing?
@KarzKreated3 жыл бұрын
That I'm not sure about. If you have checked fuses, relays, and wires themselves and have not yet resolved the problem, checking this switch wouldn't hurt.
@garzilla89813 жыл бұрын
@@KarzKreated When I turn the key to the on position there's no turn signals but when I turn the key slightly backwards I have turn signals and also the air conditioning blower turns on so it has something to do with the ignition switch I'm guessing.
@KarzKreated3 жыл бұрын
@@garzilla8981with that said, it does seem like the copper contacts inside the switch aren't making a full connection. You can try to remove it and clean it up and see if it helps. Even though this can resolve the problem, I would still recommend that you buy a new switch.

Just had this same exact issue down to the tee. No blower motor, no turn signals, no reverse lights, no convertible top motor. Pressed the key in a certain position after taking the dash apart and everything worked. Thanks for helping track down the issue.

Are you sure that white piece comes apart from aluminum part. Cause when I pull down on black tab it just releases the wires ?
@KarzKreated3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's supposed to do what you experienced. For me, pulling the tab on the side towards the firewall disconnected it from the top half. As stated in the video, this may not fix the problem and you may still have to purchase a replacement piece.

The switch was the issue in my case as well (for the air blower too). HOWEVER, taking the switch off it's mount and apart made it worse. I ended up having to ziptie it to the steering column so the signals would work and the car would stay running. I totally missed the comment by @thefoxlife3431 down below. It definitely appeared to not be meant for disassembly after the fact. Oh well it works now. It kinda seems to be running a little better too.
