My family can afford a windows laptop but they won't understand. if I give you 1000$ would you give me that 16" Macbook pro? I'm not telling you to give away. I know it's worth 3/4X the price. But If you have any extra I thought you would be able to give me one. People are saying I'm begging and a fraud. Man, I'm a Student of IIT (Institute of Information Technology, University of Dhaka) I'm a Bangladeshi. So, please don't mind if I've disappointed you.. Sorry sir. The root problem is that external displays are routed to the dedicated GPU because current generation of Intel GPUs cannot drive the displays at this resolution using the right version of display port standard. I expect this to change in the eventual 10nm chips that have support for DP 2.0 in their iGPUs
@MaxTechOfficial
@MaxTechOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if thats true Zygmunt. The 2019 base model MacBook Pro ($1299) which uses an 8th gen intel CPU with intel Iris 645 graphics can run the LG 5K at full quality or the ProDisplay XDR at 5K 10bit HDR. Same with the 2015 MacBook air can run it at 5K. The 15 and 16-inch MacBook Pro's don't use IRIS so maybe that's why but that 645 says it supports up to 4096x2304@60Hz but Apple is getting it to run way more. The UHD Graphics 630 in the 2019 16" MacBook Pro also list that spec but who knows maybe they can't get over that from the non IRIS intel GPU's or maybe its software. If its hardware it might be time to start putting IRIS into the higher end CPUs if Intel would do it, or just time to switch to ARM.

First, your suggested fan curves caused overheating and made my 16" mac unresponsive. Second, this does NOT fix the macbook pro 16". There is something wrong with it. You used istat to check power consumption on the GPU. As soon as you connect an external monitor, the discrete AMD gpu is activated, and consumes 20 Watts with the lid open on idle. In clamshell mode with 1 display port monitor it uses only 5 Watt at idle. But if you use HDMI, consumption at idle jumps to 20 watt. Why does the GPU require 5 Watts to run a 4K external display, but suddenly jumps to 20 Watts when it has to support the small internal screen, at idle? This design flaw is the reason the fans are noisy and the mac gets hot. The same issue occurs on Bootcamp. It is not a software/driver issue. It is a firmware/hardware defect, present on all 16" macbooks. If I play a light video game, the GPU and CPU pull more than 100 watts of power from the wall, and the mac DISCHARGES WHILE PLUGGED IN! Apple forums, reddit and macrumors have hundreds of reports on the above behavior. Apple claims this is normal behavior. I've never seen laptops discharge from 100% to 50% while using the laptop plugged in... This is a serious power issue, Apple is selling a defective product, and your cover up is not helping. Stop blaming Intel. This flaw is purely Apple's and AMD's fault.

Like he mentions in the video, is that Apple’s fault or Intel’s? Intel have such severe marketing fluff when it comes to the performance of their CPUs that it should be illegal. They would advertise that a CPU capable of 4.5GHz, but fail to mention that’s on 1 core, for no more than 15 seconds and only when the laptop is plugged in. Other than that it can only sustain 3.8GHz over 4 cores (again, when plugged in). The thermal limits of their chip are so low they easily hit 100c, so they throttle down to 2.7GHz as that’s all they can sustain. 2.7GHz isn’t 4.5GHz. Apple should switch to their own ARM processors. Intel have gotten slack at making good CPUs....

Yeah maybe you could blame intel more than Apple, but for me this is the first MacBook Pro that’s actually doing what I expect in 4 years - pro power with loud fans to keep it running smoothly. @@Spazza42 it is not Intel's fault. The problem is the disrete GPU by AMD, which has a defect, and consumes >20 Watts at idle, when it really should be consuming 5 Watts or less. This is really a fault of AMD and Apple, not Intel.

Completely agree. This is not a senseless complaint as the guy is implying. It's kind of offensive for him to be treating it like that, when people have spent a small fortune on a device that should do something as simple as use an external monitor. There is a clear overheating issue on external monitors that is a defect, not an issue of preference. Fans running at 5k rpm and 90C is not tolerable for playing one 4k video and browsing a couple tabs of chrome. There's no reason for the gpu to jump from 5w on the igpu all the way to 20-30w just to use one external monitor. I dont know why people give Apple all the excuses in the world. At least acknowledge the problem and say you're cool with it instead, not completely pretend as if the users are the one that should change standards. So frustrating.

Max, we all appreciate your big effort to help the MBP 16 owners to find a solution. But, I think that there is something I need to point. The exact problem is the watt usage of the GPU while connecting an external monitor with open lid. The watt usage rising immediately to 17-18 watt, which leads the cpu temperatures to rise as well to 60-65 degrees in idle state. The fans noise is a direct result of this issue, because while doing basic tasks like web browsing the cpu temperatures rise, so the fans need to take a control of that.

Thanks for your work on this video, but my fear, however, is that this will cause Apple and others to ignore this issue, as there is in fact a heat problem when connecting this MBP to an external monitor. Plugging in an external monitor spikes the power to the Radeon 5500 up over 19 watts. It doesn't come back down until the monitor is disconnected. This was not normal behavior for previous generation MacBook Pros. I appreciate the recommendation to run with turbo boost off (I have been using Turbo Switcher Pro) and to tweak the fan speed profile to resemble previous temp/fan speed profiles. These, however are all short-term solutions, or they should be, since this behavior can't be as Apple has designed the machine to operate. How do I know this? Because again, I didn't witness this behavior for any other MacBook Pro I have owned since 2006, except when there were identified issues that were resolved through software updates or hardware swaps. This isn't a "don't hold it that way" issue, like what was experienced with the iPhone 4 antenna. I would be happy to use my MacBook Pro in a way that would cause it to operate silently as it does without an external monitor connected, or in clamshell mode with a monitor attached. You can't ask users to not use an external monitor. If you would please try a test with the lid open and an external 4K monitor attached, I would appreciate your noting the results. Again thank you for the work and time you put into your videos.

As a MBP16" owner, I was pretty shocked by the fan noise. Having upgraded from a MBP15" late 2013, the difference is very noticeable. Thanks so much for the video - your deep analysis is valuable. Having said that, I'm not comfortable with the idea that these machines are working correctly. While the suggestions you make will "work around" the issue, I think perhaps there is a little mixing of cause and effect. Two things really stand out: plugging in an external display causes the dGPU to jump from 5 W to 20 W power consumption... when doing absolutely nothing. That 20 W gobbles up most of the thermal headroom, meaning that even the slightest bit of effort by the CPU causes excessive heating (and consequently fan noise). I can't think of a good reason why the minimum power consumption of the dGPU should jump so dramatically - this seems like a cause to me. Secondly, the "as designed" behaviour, which means high temperatures and fast running fans, can't be good for product longevity. I've never had a Mac that runs so hot or fans so fast. Both of these things are the enemy of long electronic lifetime. So I'm really struggling with the idea that Apple intended for these new MBPs to behave like this "out of the box", particularly when it is in such stark contrast to pretty much every MBP that came before.

That is so well said, Nick. Agree, agree. And, adding 3rd party apps to either throttle down performance or to maintain expected performance with less fan speed are not only unreasonable for a brand new $3000+ machine, but the workarounds will likely reduce long term hardware health and possibly limit warranty coverage.

I always used my 2019 16 inch Macbook Pro with an i9 as a desktop replacement on my desk with an monitor. After getting a Razer Blade that acts as a desktop now, I am using y MBP 16 inch in the living room and noticed battery life was like 4 hours max with light tasks. Just noticed I turned my dedicated graphics on all the time for slightly smoother animation. I turned that off, installed turbo boost switcher and turned off turbo boost, turned off spotlight indexing, now my battery with battery health of 79% literally lasts more than 10 hours of light tasks. because I always had my dedicated graphics on in my whole life I never experienced this long of a battery life until now. I honestly don't notice that much of a difference anyway with the animation smoothness other than application folder opening animation and I don't notice ANY performance difference with the turbo boost off. my fans are dead silent and it is always cold now. I was at one point not happy that I went with an i9 instead of an i7 model because of power consumption issues, but with turbo boost off, I am glad I went with 8 core CPU so it can handle things without the turbo boost.

It would also allow a lot of people to extend their battery life quite a bit when they aren't doing things like video editing. If I'm just typing stuff I don't need 8 cores or turbo boost, just lemme crank everything down and get like 15 hours of battery life at that point. An option to run externals with integrated would be cool too, I know they can handle it my old Iris Pro model did just fine, just gotta start putting a decent option back in the MBPs for it is all. I had this plugged into my XDR watching 4k KZbin and the gpu was sooo hot the screens started to flicker. If you reduce this fan speed your machine is going to fry. When I use my 13 inch integrated gpu I don’t get this insane issue. Tinkering with the cpu isn’t going to do anything it’s hardly doing anything when watching videos. I warn you guys from lowering your fan speeds and watching videos on a external display. You can tell it’s the GPU because all of the heat is on the right side of the chassis when you feel it, which is the location of the GPU.

There's not a single day where i don't use the Activity Monitor to shut down apps and check the reasons behind the fan extreme acceleration. Terrible experience all around. Impossible to play media content or have any write/read activity on hdd (dropbox/icloud etc) without hearing the fans blasting at crazy speeds. Tried Macs Fan Control (hangs the entire OS), tried disabling Turbo Booster. Makes me want buy an Ipad Pro, but then bye bye decent mouse/external display support

This needs to be stated more often. Apple's 2016 redesign was on the promise of their CPU partner delivering much cooler processors. Intel did them over, hard. Everyone thinks Apple just chose to make things super thin for the same TDP processors, which is false. They committed to a design with all the complication that entails such as supply chain things and factory tooling, they couldn't go back.

If you have the technical capability to figure this out, I'm sure Apple has been aware of this and should bare the responsibility of addressing these issues. Especially with the terribly expensive price tag, there should be no reason for a customer to purchase patches and waste personal time and effort for this. After being a loyal Apple customer for many years, I cancelled my order for the MBP after researching and realizing that these mentioned flaws were not the only issues. Apple has to do better if they expect to continue selling their product.

Max, i think there is something overheating in these machines, besides cpu or gpu. My experience with my 15 inch macbook from 2018 is kinda similar. For example, when i'm working in Lightroom and using external 1440p monitor, my cpu speed decrease below base clock, but when i'm exporting without external monitor is fine. Mac doesn't draw much power and the temperatures are below 90c, but the fans are on high rpm. My other experience is when i'm playing Forza Horizon 4 via bootcamp, cpu throttles below base clock immediately when i'm entering the game. While fans are spinning at max speed i think, cpu and gpu are staying in the 80c region. So, cpu and gpu have room for better performance but fans are spinning like crazy and the power draw is not high. This tells me that something else throttles. Having custom curve for fans i think is not recommended. Better let the mac do his thing.

MBPs have been absolutely plagued with issues for years now, and it isn't good enough. I'm on my 2nd 16" because of popping sounds in the first one. Thanks for the video. This really helps make the MBP 16 run smooth. The one issue I ran into is that battery temperature seems to be a bottleneck too. I set up my fan profile to what you had in the video and noticed that I would get massive CPU throttling after running for a time. I realized that the Macbook's internal temperature controls don't like the battery getting much over 35C so I added three speeds to the fan profile using the battery sensor: 10% at 33C, 15% at 35C and 30% at 37C. This seemed to prevent the throttling though I'm guessing it could be tweaked a bit more.
