1. Don't push your laptop too much 2. Don't place it over soft surfaces 3. Don't trust 3rd party apps (temperature, fan controlling) 4. Avoid using Chrome 5. If you don't know, don't open your laptop 6. Delete apps that you don't use, that run in the background 7. Use original charger only 8. Reset SMC.

Some more tips: - when an external monitor is attached, close the macbook (if you don‘t need the smaller screen). Seemingly this avoids that the GPU goes in a highpower mode. -the Intel Power Gadget gives info about temperature etc. - there are turbo boost apps, that allow to switch off the turboboost mode of the CPU., which reduces temperature by 20 degree Celsius and extends battery life, but performance goes down too. But it is nicely quiet

For MacBook Pro 16, when you transcoding some proxy and it throttled to 1.0GHZ, what you need is put it into a refrigerator, and let it finish the transcoding or exporting, you will see it runs around 3.2 GHz while processing videos. Because Final Cut utilize GPU a lot and Macbook pro use the same heat pipe to cool both CPU and GPU, your CPU temperature will be affected by an overheating GPU, since your MacBook pro is an air cooling system, the cooler ambient temperature you can create for the computer, the better CPU result you will get. Also, you can use icepack, or dry ice has an even better result, but it will make your laptop bottom super wet which is not recommended for those who located in a wet area, but places like California and Nevada, those super dry places, I think it's ok.

Good point! Truth be told, I SHOULD be doing my work on an iMac. And I probably will get the imac, once they make smaller bezels. But I gotta say, me personally, I think my macbook 16 handles my work GREAT.
@devidasa9637
@devidasa9637 4 жыл бұрын
I agree ... partially. I will indeed be moving back to an iMac once an ARM based machine comes out. Then again, I think a BIGGER part of the problem is that Apple markets and sells their 16" MBPs as desktop replacements...but don't actually design them as such...thin over function. My issue is that the 16" i9 / 5500M should not automatically draw 18W+ simply because I connected an external monitor. AT IDLE. Using Bootcamp / Windows with the same hardware...IT DOES NOT DO THIS. Thus it's Apple's poorly designed driver. That said, the new 5600M 16" appears to be performing far better than my 16" i9 / 5500m in terms of heat, fans, etc..despite its superior, more powerful performance.

I just blew out the fan and replaced the heat sink compound on my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, and watched this video in 4k on an external monitor with the lid closed. The fan didn't even come on, when it definitely would have before. Highly recommend replacing the heat sink compound every few years as well for those comfortable opening up the computer. Along with an upgrade to Big Sur through a patch tool it's like a whole new computer! I really believe this is the peak of Apple Engineering, Design and Technology and I really have no reason to upgrade even after 8 years.

Hi, Tom! Thank you so much for your video! I know im gonna look crazy asking this, considering this whole video, but I've had my MacBook Pro 16 base model, for 5 days and Im having this "overheating" issues. Im new to Mac, so Im not sure if this is normal. Taking in consideration everything you said, I still don't understand why it gets so hot!! For now, I've only use it to be on the internet, on Safari and with 3 or 4 tabs open. Nothing to crazy. Im considering taking it to the Apple Store, if they open this week. Again, thank you so much for your video. Have a great day
@TomScryleus
@TomScryleus 4 жыл бұрын
If you feel uncertain then definititly take it to apple store to check. If it doesnt shut down then its not overheating. If it doesnt shut down nothing is wrong. Its normal that it gets hot, because its a powerful machine. Just like a car engine, it will generate heat. Because it is thinn, you can have big fans or large vents, and therefor the heat will linger get the macbook hot.

the most efficient way to clean your mac is to format your mac, and reininstall macOS. Keep your personal files on cloud or flashdrive. and just renstall everything from time to time. Once you've done it a few times, its a simple process. I have no experience with cleanmymac, so I can't comment.

@@TomScryleus Thank you so much, for your reply! That's what I've been doing for the past few years. Normally I did it once a year, every time a new MacOS was released. It was a good chance to do clean install. I didn't even use Time Machine. I installed all the apps manually one by one, and then moved back all my files from an external hard-drive or from OneDrive/Dropbox, and all the calendar, contacts and other apps info from iCloud. This year, however, since my MacBook Air from mid 2012, won't be supporting Big Sur, and the system was starting to freeze a lot, and the fans to spin like crazy with just one or two apps like Mail or Word open, I decided to format the computer and clean install Catalina again. I was using Cleanmymac (the paid version), but it felt that it was consuming more resources when it was working in the background than when it was completely closed, so I finally decided to uninstall it. I am not sure if I am better off with or without it, though.

Now I have a small "wooden pot rest" under the laptop to elevate it from the table and it cooled it drastically! I don't even need to use a cooling fan like I do mostly when in the office. So thank you, I was ready to replace the battery or the macbook itself. I also just set the Chrome to - free up memory from inactive tabs, as I am guilty of having multiple tabs due to work and play. Just wanted to share that info also. Thanks again!

Fan control apps have been super useful for me over the past 9 years. The system fan curve created by Apple is not always sufficient. For a MacBook Pro 16 with an external monitor will make the palm rests super hot, and it's unacceptable. The only way I can keep my MBP open with an external monitor is to use a fan control app (e.g. iStat Menus). Just observe and manage the system resources, keep your intake and exhaust vents clear from obstruction (elevating when you can), and leverage slightly higher fan speeds in some cases and you'll have a cooler MBP. I have to laugh at tip #8 "Reinstall the entire system every 3-4 months" ...you advise against fan control apps but suggest reinstalling every 90 days?!

@philbrening6198

Apple does not have embed a thermal control utility or I should say they don’t have hyper threading control. Apple grants all the resources to apps as they want to grab. No wonder cpu and gpu get hot. Base clock on a cpu can be 2.2 ghz and then with throttle up ...it can go at a higher frequency. This heat thing also is heat pipe...poor thermal grease...dust ....and you’ve also touched on some of these things. The heat is hard to control in MacBook. Fan control is necessary. Hyper threading control is necessary. The operation as you discussed has an effect. We can agree that heat is a MacBook problem. Also it’s control has to go beyond let the system fan control and keep it on a hard surface. I have dropped my temperature 15c by dust removal and regrease the chips with fan and throttling control that I manage. Seems that I’m willing to work slower in some misbehaved apps and only use maximum resources when I want with apps that I want to use with full resources. Rather wear out fans than degrade processors.

The lighting is on point too! Keep following your heart when it comes to the topics you cover. What initially made me subscribe to your channel was your sincerity and honesty. Keep that up! I’m always happy to watch your videos to the very end of your “behind the vlog” segment. Tech videos today by people like MKBHD and Rene Ritchie are fantastically awesome, but they’re almost too polished and sometimes feel a bit...forced. I think that people will (if they don’t already) gravitate toward KZbinrs that are more raw and sincere. In any case, you’re doing some fantastic work, my friend, and I hope it’s bringing you the fulfillment you’ve been hoping for! (And if you’re ever up for bring a regular average Joe...or Rob 🤣...in for a chat for one of your videos, hit me up! I’d love to see you riff a bit on tech and life with someone who gets what you’re doing, which would only add to that honest feeling that your channel has to offer!) Thanks for all you do!!

Thanks for the great tips Tom!👍🏻 I have a question, does an i7 get hot faster than i5? Or the more cores in a processor generate more heat? For example, the 6 core i7 in the 16” MacBook generate more heat than a MacBook 13” quad core i7 processor?
@TomScryleus
@TomScryleus 4 жыл бұрын
in theory yes. the frequency and voltage is higher. BUT remember, the cooling process is important here. and the macbook 16 has 2 fans, where the 13 has 1 fan, and the 16 has bigger vents.
@jordawesome1716

@@TaxingIsThieving I don't own the M1 or M2 16'. I have the 2019 intel I7 version and depending on what you video edit it seems to edit videos fine. I am no pro video editor, but I occasionally run it and runs good enough. But the issue that bottlenecks me a lot is battery life and thermals. ever since the last 2 years of Mac OS versions, my laptop has been heating up like hell. The M1 Pro chip is significantly more powerful than the intel one in the 2019 i7/i9 models.
