Hey mate , nice and simple video. Really helpful for us newbies! Can I ask where you got your Aerator/what Aerator you have? Only Ive tried two of those rolling-aerator design models so far and they just lock up (and so don't roll) if I just roll it in one direction, or fall apart if i roll it back and forth.

Hiya Jack, I'm going to returf the top of my garden on a hill, it's in the shade where there is a lot of moss,what sort of turf should I use? Also should I use staples.....Do I start nearest the grass border, and do I lay horizontal or vertical..thankyou

You would have too dig a section out, prepare that section then lay, however it will stand out! Seeding means you can get a seemless fix to the existing lawn!

i would use screened topsoil so there are no big stones in in.soil was used to fill in the uneven parts and seeds germinate better under soil as they are easier to keep moist which causes germination.

Also people water in the morning and before right before sunset so then the water does not magnify the heat on the grass and burn/ dry it out👍

Not true. As a commercial irrigation tech for 30 years I can tell you, the best time is early morning. Evening watering can lead to mildewed plants. I constantly watered stressed lawns mid day in the middle of summer to save them. It is an old wives tale that water can burn a lawn, sorry.

Any advice/help plz chap? I followed everything you did, but we are 14days now and nothing, not one seed has germinated, I watered twice aday, morning and evening, not sure if I didn't use enough top soil, my lawn was exactly like the one in ur vid, I did a light covering of top soil all over, seeded, went over all garden with back side of rake to push in the seed abit, not to much, but so they not sitting on top, the seed was covered alittle wiv top soil, I just don't understand. Its is a new build and it was turf lawn, the dirt underneath the turf, well that's just like every building site garden, full of rubble and really poor soil, reason turf is used, wud it be the turf that's stopping my seed from growing??

Persistence! All these methods will work even on a larger space! You could get bigger tools to make it easier

The main problem I have at my place is the birds eating the seed. I covered it with some shade cloth and pinned it down but the birds some how got under there and still took the seed.

Hi Jack. Thank you for your information on lawn recovery and I will bring the instructions to my lawn. The biggest problem I have is that the topsoil was scraped off down to clay by the builder in the late 80s. The garden is around 17 m x 12m wide and there is a 3.5 m circle in the centre for plantings. From the patio the lawn is quite good for 4 m x 12 m to a small slope then the next 6 m x12 m is always having surface water after rain which drains very slowly because of the clay problem. I have an old style plug cutter and have done the right side of the circle which is included in the 6 m x12 m area and filled the holes with sharp sand. It is no better and still has standing water. Every year I electric scarify and use lawn feed spring and autumn using a rolling seed spreader. Also I cut with a petrol mountfield

Sorry Jack I cut of my last blurb prematurely. Just to round up, the garden is surrounded by conifers and in the worst shaded area moss is abundant hence the scarifying. There is no depth of soil under the lawn which means I am fighting the same battle every year. Any guidelines would be very helpful and thank you in advance. There are a few options You could replace some of the soil with some fresh top quality top soil Then I’d advise using a shady lawn seed mix A1 seeds do an amazing shady area seed! Hope this helps

I did it on 3 acres of grass, just not with top soil over the whole thing. Transplant from your good areas, and use topsoil for the very worst areas
