In the early 1970, when I was a kid, I remember news reports each year about how the auto assembly lines were shutdown to retool for the new model. Later in life I learned that was mostly the time it took to rewire the relay logic. That went way down when Dick Morley developed the PLC which put most of that logic in the "silicon", later those PLCs were networked so they can just download the new programming. I recently saw a video on the old punch card programming, something still around when I was in college. And that system has its roots in late 18th century punched hole, line by line patterns, for fabric weaving.

If you've never delved into how capillary tubes work, the only thing that makes them inefficient was lack of control of compressor and fan speed. I recommend the paper, Theory and Field Problems of the Capillary Tube, by Henry Ehrens, Sealed Unit Parts Co (SUPCO), Inc.. Cap tubes are even making it back into larger units with the inverter systems that get their efficiency from controlling compressor and fan speed to match the cap tube's self regulation. As for needing to understand how it works: ‘We just have to keep going until we find out what’s wrong or find out why we don’t know what’s wrong.‘ Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Funny how complicated things have gotten over time. A simple $20 controller off Amazon can do the heavy lifting.

I'm going away for a week. You mind stopping in everyday to feed the dog, the cat, water the plants, and defrost my evaporator coil?
