I Did a video about 4 years ago on this same topic. I recharged my AC system and had cool air for about 20 minutes...It didn't take long for the refrigerant to leak out. This time around, i show you how to replace the 2 o-rings located inside the AC compressor. Months later my AC is STILL blowing cold air. You have got to try this, it's about a 3 dollar investment plus the cost of refrigerant. I can't believe it was so simple to fix afterall.
I used a generic bottle of R134A from Autozone but you can also find it on amazon. (links below)
I also bought the o-rings directly from the dealership. Again, Amazon does have them as well, but a bit pricier.

The mechanic wanted $550-$600 to diagnose and fix my ac. I spent less than a hundred bucks for r134a with dye, glasses and a uv light to indent icy the leak and o-rings. I love KZbin!

I fixed my 2011 Forester a/c today by changing the O-rings. Part numbers for this vehicle are 73039TA040 discharge side, 73039TA020 pressure side. You can energize the compressor clutch by disconnecting the wire on top of the compressor and using a jumper from there to the battery +. The system had no pressure so there was nothing to recover. After the fix I used a vacuum pump for 20 minutes, then let it sit for 10 more to see if the gauges moved. After that I charged the system. Tools used were from Harbor Freight, Pittsburgh Automotive 3 CFM Two Stage Vacuum Pump, Pittsburgh R134A A/C Manifold Gauge Set, a R134a can tap, and R134a refrigerant. The system takes about 16oz, check the sticker under the hood. You can also watch the low and high pressure gauges to make sure you stay within the pressure limits for the ambient temperature. The compressor stopped buzzing as the pressure approached normal. I used LocTite blue on the bolts, I'm pretty sure they had thread locker residue on them. Just torqued by feel, they are not big bolts.

He's absolutely right, it is illegal to vent refrigerants into the atmosphere. One can take their vehicle to a local shop and have the refrigerant properly recovered for $55 or so. I have an EPA MVAC Technician Certification, I don't recommend "leak sealants" as the refrigerant passages are so small in modern automotive ac systems that one may end up with more problem than they solved. The O-Rings are a know leak source (definitely use the OME parts). I do like the video but I would never use the stop leak and apparently/fortunately he didn't either!

I agree, I always get mine vac'd out. Depending on whether or not if I add oil, compressor ect. I'll do that stuff myself. But the vac and charge, I leave that to someone with a machine. Don't have the space for a machine bit of a gypsy. But to anyone else. Everything but the gasses you can do yourself unless you've got the recovery and charge unit.

Curious if the EPA told you about their colossal failure with the DEP system in semis? Did they tell you about the lithium mines making these bullshit electric cars? How about how precious metals in your cats will conserve on greenhouse gases while the mining to get those materials is FAR worse than what all cars are putting out? Dude fuck outta here. Just like hair spray was the cause of the hole in the ozone layer back in the day. Oh no! Couldn't be major corporations getting subsidies while fucking our environment to hell and back. Must be the everyday person... Using hairspray... Dude fuck outta here. You and the EPA.

When reading the pressure, the correct value is when the compressor is on, when it's off it will read much higher than it really is. From empty it would need at least 2 cans of 12oz, so it seems like you've read the high value when the compressor is off rather than the real value when the compressor is on.

A vacuum really should have been applied before adding any refrigerant into the system. Any moisture in the atmosphere when the lines were disconnected is now inside the A/C lines which will eventually cause corrosion inside the lines or even compressor failure. The proper way of recharging the system should have been done with A/C gauges on the low and high side..
@charlesmartinez2999
@charlesmartinez2999 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, I worked for Snap-On Tools equipment technician a few years back. Our A/C refrigerant recycling machines would pull a deep vacuum, hold the vacuum to verify for no leaks. Then shoot the proper amount of R134a into the system. I live in Las Vegas and this would not fly in the desert.

@06wrxdude maybe the same temporary results, but in addition to now having the moisture from the atmosphere in your system which can turn your oil acidic in time and eat away at your system, you also have a system full of air that you dumped refrigerant on top of, that now runs a high head pressure and will eventually cause more leaks down the road. So not the same result. Vacuum is absolutely crucial. But I hope she's still holding up for you man! Great video besides that🤌
@bmc5180
@bmc5180 11 ай бұрын
@@jordanriggs2745 You mentioned the possibility of his oil turning acidic, but is there really any oil left in the system to begin with? I figure he lost pretty much all of his oil and refrigerant due to the leak. I guess it's possible there could have been some residual oil, maybe an ounce or two at most. But I would assume if (when) his system fails prematurely it will be due to the lack of oil...as well as damage from the moisture and air in the system. But I'm still learning this stuff, which is why I wanted to ask a follow-up question to your response.

Nice job man :) I also like that Sony head unit you got there. Been running a Pioneer AVH-X5600S from Crutchfield with steering control hookup in my 2015 WRX. I could not stand the base head unit I had on my car. I'm normally not a complainer with the head units in cars but I hated it enough to get that around 6 months after getting the car. So far it is holding up well. Though if I could go back I'd just not bother getting that same unit since it has a DVD player I NEVER use lol. Waste of money. Another critique of that stereo is it doesn't have great active noise cancellation so it picks up much of the road and cabin noises. Audio quality is pretty good though. Stock speakers and rest of audio system is stock.

@06wrxdude

Thanks for watching! Since my system was empty of refrigerant, the pressure switch would never be activated because it needs some pressure to function and kick on the compressor. Jumping that switch allowed me to start filling the system right away. I’ve heard you can indeed damage the compressor if you try to refill without it being kicked on first. I hope that makes sense…

@06wrxdude
@06wrxdude 2 жыл бұрын
The compressor won’t automatically turn on without proper pressure in the AC system. Therefore the pressure switch had to be bypassed which turns on compressor and allows the new refrigerant to be pumped in properly. Once you have sufficient pressure in system, the switch no longer needs to be bypassed.

If your system has lost all of its refrigerant, your AC compressor will not engage. You can test it by using a jumper like i did in the video around 6:00 mark. This will rule out any question if your compressor is bad or just not activating due to zero pressure in system. Good luck!
