I think you simplified the task of the arm in a splendid way: stay super loose and feel the lag from the hip rotation. Also the tip about finding a feeling rather than trying to be a robot was very insightful and true. I think thousands of players will benefit greatly from both this video and the hip rotation video. Them combined is essentially all you need for power and control. Thank you!

Leon, there's more quality form advice in this and your last video than hundreds of other yt videos combined. Thank you! I have only recently been coming around to bh form in the way you've described and it's great to have my thoughts (and feelings) confirmed by someone who has been playing much longer than I have. I don't know if you're looking for new video ideas, but I'd love to hear how you think about modulating power in bh throws --how you change the feeling to power down or up from your standard throw. Thanks and best of luck!

I've spent the better part of a year really revamping my form top to bottom. I could tell there was something missing. I know we all see the clickbait titles of "throw 50 feet further insteantly" etc, but man... It kinda happened. Went to the field last night, and in very sub-optimal conditions, threw my main throwing putter 15ft further than I ever have, 40ft further than it's usual distance, and an 8 speed disc 45ft further than it's ever gone. Not every throw was that magical of course, but the ones where it really clicked, it clicked in a way it hasn't before. I used to be really good at staying super loose in the upper body, it's always been a thing I was aware of, but something that I lost when spending so much time making technical changes. These last two videos have been the most helpful ones I've found for where I'm at right now.

Some helpful ideas here. One tiny thing I disagreed with was the part at the beginning about people not really throwing nose-down and actually throwing neutral. There are a bunch of Tech Disc results being posted online now by online form coaches and pros that suggest optimal results with the nose actually releasing with a negative nose angle (both relative to the ground and to the launch angle). I think it's actually true that you want the nose to be slightly nose-down and not perfectly neutral.
@LeonSonnleitner
@LeonSonnleitner 6 ай бұрын
Could be the Case, I honestly haven't looked at what disc golf tech has to say about that. To me it doesn't really Matter what the optimal Angle is, it is about achieving a good Feeling during a shot. Thanks for the Update tho!
@NickCarroll
@NickCarroll 6 ай бұрын
One thing to keep in mind is the nose angle is only down in the first moments the disc is in the air, as gyroscopic forces will bring the disc's angle more in line with the trajectory of the flight.

Another great video! Your previous video really helped a lot of the work I've been doing this off season click and this one really helps clarify how you visualize the swing of the arm through the stroke and its relationship with nose angle and release point! I'm looking forward to whatever concise and profound insights you have in the next video! Hollyn Handley also had a great short video about following through your thumb up as a way of keeping the nose level, which I think also just helps give people a reference for keeping their hand at a consistent position. The corollary though is that following through with your thumb parallel to the ground does help turn the nose up more even if you're swinging through straight, and I've found that this is an easy way to consistently get touchy nose up approach shots.

Your last video was great and so is this one. Time for you to get a sponsor brotha! I'd like to point out just for scientific accuracy, specifically for distance drivers, it's actually true that the most aerodynamically efficient release angle is -4 degrees, but thrown at a slight upward trajectory (-4 is relative to the forward motion of the disc, not to the ground). This makes perfect sense if you understand lift forces and gyroscopic precession but it has also been proven with fluid dynamics simulations as well as WR distance throwers in practice. You already know that positive nose angle causes earlier fade and prohibits most of the effect of turn. Negative nose angle simply is the reverse of that. Negative release angle also coverts upwards velocity into forward velocity actually causing the disc to *accelerate* after leaving your hand. The top of the disc doesn't have a lip unlike the bottom so negative lift (air pushing down on the top of the disc) actually pushes the disc forward (like how a sailboat can travel faster than the wind by "pinching" its keel between the wind and water). This acceleration basically cancels out drag for the first second or so of flight, resulting in a fourth flight period you don't see in other disc types sometimes called "gyroscopic" flight, before the typical turn, glide, and fade phases begin. (You don't do this with anything other than distance drivers because it relies entirely on both the wing shape of DDs as well as extremely high angular momentum from extremely high spin RPM * higher weight distribution around the outer rim)

I have been watching many form videos in the past but it was never explained in a way which my brain could grasp easily. My key information I got from you is that the arm stays loose and the pull of the arm is coming from my hip rotation instead of an active pull. I will try this today and think this is the key for an efficient form. Thx a lot. When can we expect a sidearm video 😍?

Great and well explained video! Keep up the good work! 💪🏻 I'm still struggling to get that looseness when throwing drivers. Putters and mids I can throw with relatively loose arm, and usually I notice that I succeeded when I throw way past the target even thought I tried to throw a "soft" approach. 😄 Trying to work my standstill during the offseason as that may help with better finding the correct sequence of the hips driving the arm. Also it's slippery during the winter so trying to avoid the injuries as well 😂

I like the simple, focus of this video. There are so many videos on so many details that trying to focus on even a tiny bit of it leaves me a tensed up mess. On another front, though I see a lot of content suggesting the theoretical ideal for a throw is a 4 degree downward disc angle. How can that have lift? There's more to a disc than just the overall flight plane, i.e. it's not just a squat cylinder flying through the air. There's a parting line and shape above and below it to consider. I've not worked out the physics, but I assume someone did -- unless the 4 degree thing is just totally made up. I guess we'll find out as more and more people spend time with tech discs.

Awesome tips. I would say it is good to go by feel, but when practicing you also you have to film yourself, look in a mirror, or have someone watch you. For instance I "felt" like I was reaching straight back, but when I filmed myself from behind, the disc was way back behind my body and getting stuck behind me (rounding). I have to really exaggerate changes at first. I've gotten better, but still more to work on. I think staying loose will really help me. Thanks!

Hey Leon, thank you so much for these two videos. I highly appreciate that you clear some myths up that are out there. And make very explicit what is usually just not exact enough. In that regard I have one question: What's with the upper arm / right shoulder? If you keep both of them completely lose, the rotation will just cause your upper arm to basically hug yourself - and the disc just ends up behind your body like you displayed here multiple times. Or do you also keep that very lose and it's on something else with me being off?

Great question! I personally think that "collapsing" shouldn't be a big issue If you 1, stay loose for the entirety of the motion and 2, more importantly, Setting your feet Up in a way where the upper arm doesn't really want to Go too close to the Body. It could be that people who have this "collapsing" issue plant their last step either too far to the front left side or they already start their hip Rotation before their Front foot Hits the Ground! Hope this helps
@moonylo1
@moonylo1 6 ай бұрын
Thank you Leon! That made me try things and I think I figured. If you go into a couch potato position, so spine curled outside, shoulders forward an inside (a common position also for people working on the computer a lot), you can collapse your arm very far in. While if you stay upright, chest out, shoulders a little further back, it's impossible to get far beyond 90 degrees. So the ones of us with this problem have to work on our upper body posture.
@Matarro1980
@Matarro1980 6 ай бұрын
Hi! Two questions. 1: The way I've often heard nose angle explained is that the disc is neutral or slightly nose up in relation to the ground but since you throw it upwards it will be slightly nose down in relation to the air that hits it. Would you consider this correct? 2: I sometimes hear a cue that is to "focus on the hit". In other words, your throwing arm stays nice and loose but as it slings out you explode. Do you think there's any value in this? Is this something that you think about or does it come naturally? I think your channel will be a valuable addition to the youtube armada of form experts. Cheers!
@1981FRUIT
@1981FRUIT 6 ай бұрын
I believe when throwing up or down,(pulling from low to high or high to low) as long as you are loose like he says. The nose angle will be best for the shot. 😅maybe. Just as long as shoulders are at the angle of throw from the start. But as form videos goes, these are the most helpful ones I've ever come across
@LeonSonnleitner
@LeonSonnleitner 6 ай бұрын
Hey! Regarding question Number 1: I'm Not quite Sure If I agree tbh because I never really thought about it that way. There definitely is a scientific answer for this but I don't think I have the experience or qualifications to answer this. To me a good nose angle simply means that the disc doesn't rise Up in an unnatural way, No Matter If I throw a very flat shot or a little Higher. 2, I personally don't think about a "Hit" or anything Like that because I think this could lead to some unnatural "stopping" somewhere. For me, a backhand should feel like one long Motion where I let my limbs to what they naturally want to Do. If "focusing on the Hit" works for you, you should definitely do it tho! The mental side of Form practice will Always be very individual Hope I could help!
@Matarro1980
@Matarro1980 6 ай бұрын
@@LeonSonnleitner I don't know what's correct about the nose angle either so I'm just curious. It's interesting to look at data from Tech Disc though. In the end it's the result that matters so if your advice about being relaxed helps fix the nose angle, that's great. Focusing on the hit did help me both with accuracy and distance. However, after trying to not think about the arm and just relax I have to say that it seems promising. I haven't thrown in a month due to injuries and I'm still not 100% but I was hitting my lines well and it felt effortless. It was hard to stay relaxed when I tried to throw far but controlled shots felt great. I think I'm going to commit to this way of throwing for a while because if it works I see some big benefits. It's less to think about, the more you can remove without losing anything the better imo. The biggest benefit for me personally might be that it solves my tendency to throw before I'm fully planted, that's what I'm hoping for the most. So yeah, this is going to be interesting. 🙂

thanks for the explanation! weve established we are to use the hips as the throwing mechanism and to be as loose as possible but you have to actively use some part of the arm at some point in the throw or the disc will just flop out etc.. so my ? is what part of the arm do you actively use? i only actively use my wrist and as my body is uncoiling i pop wrist forward loose but quick. i assume you do the same but im wondering whats going through your head as you do it?? and how do you keep your arm from collapsing in on itself and making disc tap your chest as you uncoil etc. if 100% loose?

Having No muscle tension in the pullthrough is physiologically Impossible. But with your hips and Core turning there will automatically start to Form some (unconscious!) Tension in your arm, but only in the right places which is the Beauty behind it in my opinion! That is the reason staying as loose as possible works for me because when I start to Turn, my arm tenses up in the right places automatically. I don't even notice it until i See it in slow mo and a short sleeve tbh.Hope this helps!

i see and ive been at form work hard core for a bit now and i just tried what you said and im getting the same type of snap but not actively using my arm at all. i had to do it from standstill bcuz when i do xtstep my hips lose the explosion for now. but i can finally see how i can achieve lag bcuz the hip moves faster then the arm until it doesnt! thanks for video!!@@LeonSonnleitner

I know you focus quite a bit on just staying loose and using the body but I'm curious if you think there's any arm strength put into the throw at all and, if so, where/when? Do you think the arm should add any strength to push the disc out from the pocket at all for instance?

Any tips/drills on how to avoid the second error you mentioned, where you bring the disc in toward your body right at the start of the forward part of the throw? That's a bad habit of mine.

Could very Well be due to a runup issue imo. (planting in a way where you start to get into your own way) will do a Video on this within the next few days!

In the video you're talking about trying to keep throwing arm relaxed, which makes sense for arm speed&control. Often though when I do this, my arm collapses against my body (which obviously messes everything up). So, should I try to actively keep the elbow out or adjust something else in the throw?

Thank you@@LeonSonnleitner for taking time to answer the questions! As matter of fact I noticed how my plant step is very wide, so my body kind of becomes in the way of the disc (& throwing arm). Looking forward to do some adjustment there and see where things go. Thanks again!

I thought the techdisc shows that the smallest amount of nose down is ideal (-3 degrees) But I agree its so small it prob is easier to explain as neutral
@LeonSonnleitner
@LeonSonnleitner 6 ай бұрын
I have actually gotten that -3 degree thing a lot, yes! But tbh I don't really care if it is exactly -3 degrees or not. To me, trying to achieve the most neutral position seems to be the most logical, yes

Excellent video. One thing I noticed though was that in the hip rotation video, you were talking about how we should rotate our front hip backwards but in this video you were swinging your back hip through instead. That confused me a little. great video all the same🎉
@LeonSonnleitner
@LeonSonnleitner 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! By bringing the front hip back it can often look like the Back hip is Going somewhere because it closes towards the target so quickly. Would you mind telling me the timestamp of the throw(s) that lead to confusion? Thanks for watching!

@jamesstables6636 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Leon. One instance is at 3:35 and i can’t find the other but after watching again, I can see that you meant that the left hip turns towards the target as a result of the right hip turning back. I think it was just the way I interpreted the comment you made and the way you were holding your back leg that confused me. but i understand now and can’t wait to practice this more in my training. thank you.

What if your arm is too loose cause I have had a rounding problem from it being too loose unless it was just cause my foot was not planted before I started the throw
@LeonSonnleitner

If you’re arm is completely loose and just follows your body how does your shoulder and arm not collapse inward towards your chest? Something need to be tense somewhere so that your upper arm and shoulder stay at a 90 and not collapse inwards while lagging behind your torso. How can I combat this without actively driving the elbow forward?

I have been trying to stay loose and throw with my hips but i think im using my shoulder now. After a week the pain starts to go away but if i play it comes back and is super sore for a few days. Any jerky type of movements or pressure against my shoulder area will hurt. Am i just using my shoulder to throw and not actually using the hips as i thought i was?
@LeonSonnleitner

Stuff Like this is really hard to diagnose without taking a Look at your form. If it really is an acute pain there definitely is something wrong. If it's Just really heavy soreness it could be due to some faster movements that you Aren't used to yet

i notice you coil on back leg with arm at 90 degree angle and only as you stop coiling do you start to reach out not only with arm/disc but with leg at the same time.. i think that could be a key!
