Did you know that flushing your motor with fresh water after salt water use can significantly increase the lifespan of the motor? Well the answer is a huge YES.
Your outboard uses water to keep itself cool. Salt crystals and particulates from water sources can be left behind by evaporated water and eventually restrict flow. Even though your motor may have coated cooling passages and has sacrificial zinc anodes, salt can still cause corrosion over time. These symptoms can lead to poor circulation and overheating which cause substantial damage.
Small motors can be flushed by running them in a bucket, bag, or bin. This can often be done simultaneously while you are running your fuel out. Many portable motors have built in or removable attachments that allow owners to utilize a garden hose.
