How to Fly a Go Around | Climbing out After a Landing Approach | How to Land an Airplane

Learning how to land an airplane is hard. Sometimes a plan doesn't work out. If your approach to land isn't going as you hoped, you're too high, too low, or something unexpected happens like a fox jumps out on the runway, apply full power and execute a go around. It will give you another chance at landing, and if done correctly, is one of the safest tools in your kit.

The number one thing ALL new pilots must realize about going around. When you apply full power, the aircraft will tend to pitch up. Forward yoke is need to push the nose down slightly. Then, slowly remove full flaps as speed increases.

If you hold it works just the same. Just do not pull with any authority and you'll have it.

And just as a flight instructor myself, I have always been in an opinion of retracting the Flaps from a landing configuration to a notch up provided my aircraft is a minimum of 100ft AGL soon after the go- around action is initiated, with the attitude selected for the climbout and speed at or slightly above 65 kts and then the others up in stages, preferably by 300ft AGL into a complete clean after ( clear of obstacles, +ROC, Speed 65kts< ) One must definitely be prepared with the attitude selection soon after cramming that throttle with the touch of right rudder to overcome the left turning tendency of the aircraft, also be prepared to overcome that shear pitch up that aircraft can experience in a given configuration. Loved the video♡

Another great video! One comment and one question: I’ve heard some pilots say that on every approach they call out loud: “going around is an option” (or some variation of that). It’s a habit I’ve adopted and a good reminder that - yes - if things get unstable, going around is an option. The question: you mentioned using sight picture on the transition to a climb attitude. But would it be equally effective to just shoot for Vy? Is the rationale for sight picture keeping your eyes outside? I use airspeed a lot as a proxy for configuration. Just curious on your thoughts. Thanks for this and all your other amazing videos!

I just watched "TURN SMART - RESPECT THE SAFETY MARGIN" on the Air Tractor channel. Overall, it's an amazing video packed full of critical information and fantastic visualizations. But specific to this, ag pilots spraying fields really need to understand what's going on when you're doing stuff "low AND slow" so the video has great explanations and visualizations of left turning tendencies and keeping coordinated (along with a great middle section on the "normalization of deviance" problem keeping good habits to fly safe.) It's a video that is on par with the high quality on this channel.

I know the “cool” as “click” as in click the GPS to activate the missed approach. Obviously not applicable for staying in the pattern to try again. Carb heat is part of the “cram”
