How To Fly A Modern Hovercraft!!

Last month we did the Honda Goldwing vs BMW K1600 review and as part of that review we went across to the Isle Of White on the Hovercraft. On that crossing we were lucky enough to get access to the cockpit of the craft and a full walk through of all the controls from pilot Steve Attrill.
I included some of the crossing my my bike review but there was just too much info not to do a dedicated video of this incredible engineering marvel.

I was on shift that day I’ve been working for Hovertravel for the past 6 years as a cashier, I started out as an apprentice I’m known as a HSA (Hovercraft Service Agent) I’m responsible for ticket sales answering customer queries the general up keep of the Ryde terminal. As a small child I remember being transported from Dover to Calais in the huge car-carrying hovercraft that used to run. One of my earliest memories - obviously made quite an impact. That was great, thanks Chops 👍

That was a really interesting walk through and description on how to fly a hovercraft. By comparison with an aircraft it’s a dog’s dinner. I really enjoyed the pilot’s description and learnt a great deal. That was really interesting. With regard to safety, I found the most surprising thing was that ground staff were wearing HiViz jackets (quite why during daylight I don’t know) and despite knowing there was a hazard with flying stones, wore no eye protection. Wow!!! I never knew hovercraft had VP propellers, I always thought they had ducted fans. That is amazing so that means the engine power useage is much more efficient across a wider Eng Rpm power range. Great video👍

These hovercraft are absolutely amazing - I spent a whole day once to just experience the Griffons and I have to say it was one of the most fascinating rides I have taken! Very interesting to see the cockpit and hear from a pilot also - Lovely video

Used to maintain a hovercraft for the fire service was only a small 3/4 person one with a volkswagen 1.9tdi engine. Had to go on a course down in Portsmouth I think it was and they had the old channel crossing hovercraft there. They were huge.

We took the hovercraft over to Ryde last weekend, a first for me, it's a fabulous way to cross. Interesting to hear about the ballast, as the hovercraft we were on was definitely lower on the RHS, which we assumed to be the wind, so we were surprised to find it was still RHS low on the return crossing. I guess the pilot doesn't always adjust the trim? Over in Ryde we saw a medivac to the mainland happening - it looked to a bit of a draughty stretcher ride from the ambulance across the slipway to the hovercraft!

Yeah it's costly to run and maintain I think is the biggest limitation. Its why the channel crossing one's were retired 👍
