Hi Jon, thanks for the great video, it bought back a ton of memories, I got my private flying out of Teterboro airport in the late 70's, the Hudson river was my playground, Stewart airport and Hudson Valley RGNL were regular stops, the wide area of the river north of the Tappan Zee Br. is where I did spin practice and laps around Ms. Liberty was a must when carrying passengers, lots of changes since those day, more traffic, more rules and too many helicopters...

We used to do this in FAR121 passenger ops with B1900D VFR from EWR to ALB it was so cool!!! I have not done that in such a long time and it was so nice to see and hear this again, so I can do this in my C172 soon! Thanks!

Yeah, I made it! I flew today Hudson Exclusion and Skyline routes as a PIC! :) At 7:00 am it was nice, smooth, and quiet on CTAF, we were the sole aircraft on the route :) Thanks, Jon for the video, it helped a lot! BTW, a night before I flew this route in new MS Flight Simulator 2020 and found it very helpful, it was almost as real as it is in real life!

Excellent video, important to take the FAA SFRA Course beforehand, as it reviews everything you need to know in preparation. Also, very important to check for TFR’s prior to your flight up & down the Hudson, as TFR’s occur frequently with the Trump Tower and nearby golf course, as well as local baseball games. Hudson River Corridor is definitely a Great Flying Experience!

Awesome video. I am planning on flying the Hudson SFRA soon because MMU is very close. Quick question, it seems like you descended from 1100 to 900 to circle the statue. The FAA recommends that you leave the transient airspace and re-enter under 1000 if you want to circle the statue. That seems like it would be more dangerous but I'm not sure. Did you descend straight through 1000?
@akfox38
@akfox38 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, he technically didn't followed what's outlined when flying the transient route between 1k and 2,999. You're not supposed to make any heading or altitude changes without first flying outside the corridor past the VZ bridge and then drop down and come back in lower to circle the statue. You can then fly back out again and climb back up to head North. I guess people kind of do a mix of what they want though. I'm going to be flying this tomorrow hopefully.

Westchester (HPN) is perfect, 11nm from the southbound entrance (Alpine Tower)...Orange County (MGJ), Bridgeport (BDR), Danbury (DXR) or Republic (FRG) are secondary options, but all of which will be a bit more than hour, about 35nm from Alpine, esp FRG as you have to circle the Bravo...some options in Jersey I'm not so familiar with: Essex (CDW) and Morristown (MMU), and there are a few untowered strips 20nm south of Verrazano Bridge, but again, I'm not familiar...Jon I hope you don't mind the link, no hard feelings if you have to delete it :), but here is the video the HPN flight school made. It was peak COVID May 2020 so I'm sure traffic was light and not as much activity the GB and Westside highway were dead!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5-YZWd7hKl4i5o

Great informative video. Although I will never be up that way flying, I noticed Nikko had a Statue of Liberty video about a month or so ago, and he alluded to the congestion around the Hudson. The fact you call out as a Super Cub, brings up something I’ve been wondering about. With reporting aircraft make, when reporting as a Piper, how would someone know you’re in a high-wing or low-wing? In this case wouldn’t it be better to call out the model instead?
@feetgoaroundfullflapsC

Good point. I have been trying to bring this kind of reporting Oskosh style, but conservatives in ATC dont care. They like to see more mid airs and scares. Which makes them argue to hire more ATC..

If the exclusion of 1000' - 1300' is for transient operations, and it's expected you won't make major deviations in heading and altitude, how do you account for descending 300' to circle the statue? Did you exit the exclusion, descend, then come back in the way the FAA materials recommend? This flight is on my bucket list, but it has to wait until I retire, since I'm 1500 miles away.

I COULD be wrong in what I am about to say, but I have done this flight many, many times myself. Here is my understanding of the rules and how they work, I would advise you to look into it to make sure. So you were NOT transitioning the area north to south or south to north. If you had done that, you would have been required to stay between 1000 and 1300 feet, and you would have picked up a clearance too. But being that you were pretty much sight seeing, then circling the statue of liberty, then even turning around and going back up northbound, you were certainly not transitioning the airspace, and therefore flying above the altitude you should have been at for most of the time. I see the VFR sectional list an altitude for local flights from surface up to. but not including, 1000'. I believe you can go higher north of the GW bridge, or south of the VN, but look it up! I could be wrong. You would, of course, need to stay at least 500' agl to make it all legal too. Thing is, around the statue of liberty, you can not be ABOVE 500' either! That would put you right into the airspace for Newark! Anyway, I have taken many, many students up and down the river, but this was well before I started flying for the airlines. Things could have changed! Happy flying. Jan.
