This is one of the most helpful videos. I've had my fly rod for 3 days, after watching this video and about 2 hours at the casting pond I was able to do throw a cast that looked some what decent, close enough that I have a great understanding of what suppose to feel like and look like. Thanks Capt. Chris... I owe you a beer......

Sweet training technique! No one on the web really ever impresses me when it comes to teaching skills. Having an ability or talent and being able to concisely explain its methodology to others are vastly different skills rarely shared by the same person. Well done, man! Thank you! I will be making my first flycasts tomorrow and I feel... less ignorant and a lot more prepared to take a go at it.

Just started fishing last month; I've caught a few rainbows in our warm water, but my casting has been mediocre at best. The paintbrush analogy really helped me improve my cast, and the follow-through is only working now that I've focused on these 5 tips. Great videos Chris, thanks.

The flinging paint concept might just be what I've been missing. Been having a hard time getting my casting arm to properly accelerate to a stop, but thinking of it like paint makes perfect sense. It's so much easier to get my arm to do what it needs to do with that in my head.

Really great video Cpt. I was taught a straight line incline for casting, and the rod was used at an incline to show the tracking of the wrist required, similar to the way you used it in the demo. We were to imagine that there was a curtain rail with a ring on it attached to the wrist. First time I have seen someone else using the rod to highlight this too. Excellent explanations especially like the acceleration demo.

This is a fantastic instructional video. Thank you for taking the time to help beginners like me improve their casting mechanics, Capt. Myers. In golf, swing analysis with a dual-camera setup (side and rear view) is incredibly helpful to assess arm, wrist, and club head position as well as swing plane angles. It would be extremely helpful for myself and others to see you demonstrating these casting principles using this dual-camera approach, as well as some shots focused on showing what an ideal loop looks like in the back-cast. Would you consider making this vid? Thanks!!
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. If you view a fly cast from straight on, one does not see the loop shape like you can from the side. I will see if I can do one to show hand and arm movement from the front and rear. You should be able to see the back loop in its entirety here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqmwhKp8nJaWpJI

If you find that you're breaking your wrist while casting, try using a cheap toweling wrist sweat-band with the butt of the rod tucked into it, this allows for a little movement but stops full wrist collapse, another way is to use your index finger where your thumb would be while casting, at the top of the handle and in the direction of your cast hopefully, when your thumb is substituted for your index finger it has the effect of not allowing the wrist to "break", you can try this without even holding a rod! Both methods work and once you and your wrist have learned the casting stroke (you might adopt an advanced distance casting technique) you can do away with the band or substitute the finger for the thumb once more, try these methods, they work :)

YES...your bit on constant acceleration is something that is not properly explained often...my absolute biggest epiphany with fly casting came when I realized that the start of my stroke was way too quick and the end was way too tentative...after that things fell into place really quickly

Great videos! Have any tips in terms of casting and getting used to casting heavier weight lines (7 and 8 weight lines etc.) with faster rods? For me, it is a bit of a learning curve changing from a 4 or a 5 weight rod to an 8 weight. I also find that sometimes my fly is hitting the rod tip on the forward cast as well (tailing loop I'm assuming). Any thoughts? Thanks!

How many meter was your longest distance that you could deliver or send the fly to ?
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 8 жыл бұрын
I have taken plenty of shots over 25 meters at fish that were getting away but 99% of shots do not need to be anywhere near that long. Having a good quick accurate 10 - 20 meter cast is much more important then being able to throw the entire fly line

I just began fly fishing and i feel like I'm doing everything right, however at the end the fly line and tippet just bunches up and doesn't produce a nice long roll out cast. any suggestions
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 9 жыл бұрын
nitro4117 hard to say for sure without seeing it but the main two causes I see are too short of a stroke for the amount of line being cast. This could be caused by forward creep or just a short back stroke. The other is stopping the tip travelling down and not out towards the target. If you can send me a private youtube of yourself casting I can probably tell you right away.
@gmstuart1
@gmstuart1 9 жыл бұрын
nitro4117 I'll check out a video for you too if you'd like. If your cast looks good until the end this could be cause by not having enough line speed (probably from not making a good stop)....could also be on of the things Chris mentioned.....or power may be applied to early in the stroke.....If you do a video I suggest casting very slowly with about 35' of line so someone can see the line well....if you keep having trouble find an FFF Certified Casting Instructor near you at www.fedflyfishers.com - you can email me at gmstuart1@gmail.com

nitro4117 It seems that what you are describing is what I refer to as a pile cast. Which can be useful in certain circumstances when trying to present your fly in a tight area where you want a brief moment of natural float, especially in pockets where micro drag can be problematic. I've seen this technique come in handy when attempting to fish spring creeks, where you have lots of eddy's. Especially useful with 6x or 7x tippet. Pile casting is caused when you slow the cast at the end of the follow through, as though you almost lift the rod at the very end which causes the fly to bunch up and float to the surface of the water, instead of accelerating and suddenly stopping. A good way to practice is to take a fly, clip the hook with a pair of pliers, and practice both techniques in an open field. You will soon see the difference in pile casting versus an accelerated follow through which results in a full extended straight line presentation. Lastly, it my be your leader. Store bought tapered leaders can also create this affect. If possibly, I would recommend hand tied leaders. For a few dollars more they are well worth the investment. Happy Fishing!

I think significant wrist movement is acceptable. I've been practicing for a few days now, and honestly, I think if you focus on arm movement.... like REALLY focus on it, your biceps will be sore after an hour or two when you're new at it. but if your wrist hurts much, then you've used it too much. I'm no teacher, but that's what I've found out personally.
@gmstuart1
@gmstuart1 9 жыл бұрын
Hunter Sibcy Hunter, remember that casting to about 45' or so you should look to the side and see your thumb pointing nearly straight up and you should see your other fingernails.....this will show that you had good tracking (not swinging the rod to the side....watching to see if your reel stays straight works too). If you have trouble getting that much line out you may need to lengthen your stroke. The real problem with breaking your wrist is that it causes power to be applied too early in most cases....and your rod tip also travels in a convex (domed) path like windshield wipers....this causes big inefficient loops.
