How to Fly Fish Cheesman Canyon in the Fall // READING WATER with Scott Dickson

Reading water and understanding how to present and fish your fly in a specific section of water trumps fly selection in many ways. We're excited to launch a new SERIES on our KZbin Channel titled: "READING WATER." In each episode of READING WATER, we will tag along with a skilled and experienced angler who will give us insight into how they approach a specific section of water from all angles - GEAR, RIGGING, FLY CHOICE, SEASONALITY, FLOWS, and the like.
For this episode of READING WATER, we joined Trouts Head Guide Scott Dickson as he jumps into one of his favorite late summer favorite in Cheesman Canyon and catches a couple of trout. Scott explains his approach as he fishes through and picks apart this run. The concepts he explains are great approaches for a variety of water along the South Platte and many of our favorite tailwaters. Enjoy in HD.

So awesome! This is really informative for any water. Loved the play by play. Thank you! One improvement might be to add some fisherman POV shots, maybe on especially good casts/drifts, hooksets, net landing, etc. This might be really helpful for the upcoming euro video. And I’m going to have to check out these playlists. This is the I heard of that!

that's a great suggestion! we already filmed a float fishing one that will be releasing in the next 24 hours or so. The carp one we filmed today and we used a chest mounted GoPro and we'll be doing the same for the Euro one we're filming in a couple of weeks!

I go here 1-2 times a week. The fishing the last 3 weeks has been lights out. Great video! Edit: I’m also glad I’m not the only one who will have multiple good fish in that run and have one or two come off haha. I think the different flows in current mess with keeping them stuck. That’s what I tel myself at least.

Great video I was wondering what size split shot he was using and where he placed it on the line? Also how far was the weight from the indicator I know he said he will adjust the depth as needed. I can use all the help I can get fishing Cheesman 😂

Not sure on the exact size of the weights, but typically he puts it 12-16" above his lead fly. Scott generally prescribes to the idea that the distance between his indicator and the weight should be 1.5-2x the depth of the water that he's fishing.
