How to Fly Over Water Safely - DJI AVATA 2

Flying over water can be quite daunting but I'm going to give you all the tips you need to do it safely and help put your mind at ease. You can capture some beautiful shots with the Avata 2 flying at the beach and over water if you just know how!

Thank you for another cool video! Just on a side note: flying over water is one thing... but land drone on the boat :)))) Even if boat is anchored, it is always moving because of wind and currents, but drone has stable GPS position. You will need to learn how manually grab drone and stop it. Especially if it has obstacle avoidance. Especially if you are on sailing boat with mast, sails and a lot of lines and almost no flat space to land safely.

Hey! Thank you! Yeah, flying from a boat is a different animal. It's something I'm going to cover in the future because I believe it deserves its own video. Hand launching and catching it is a key skill for that , and signal loss action will change depending on what kind of boat you're on. Either updating the home point periodically or set to hover if you can control the boat 🚢

Pretty good advice. I always attach floats to my quads over water because there is always a chance that they'll still drop out of the sky with no warning.

Highly recommend to fly at least 50h is simulator to feel confident to fly above the water 😊😊

it's a bit irrational to worry about loss over water compared to some cliff side or high trees, but I've felt it before for sure. Even flying my Avata 2 over my small pool is a bit nerve wracking. Great tips in this one! Also, if flying from a boat, keep updating your home point or it will return to where you were and hour ago.

Yeah, it's understandable to worry about it. Yep, flying from a boat is a different kettle of fish, but yep, either update the home point or set it to hover and then go back to get it.

I'm just getting into drone stuff.. I want 2, lol the mini 4 pro & avata, I like cinematic shots but also want the diving n fastness of a fpv.. and also combine those shots, but my biggest problem is, I have zero need for this stuff lol.. so do I burn 5g on stuff I have no use for? Lol.. (it's alot of stuff, vloging & streaming equipment for drone flying n stuff)

Yeah it's tempting to want all the cool toys, but if you don't have any need for it then it's just a case of if you really want them. I travel around with so much equipment for filming, but I've just accepted that that's how it's going to be for me 😅

Do you have ND filters for the Avta 2? If you don’t, do you need them with this drone for quality shots shooting at 4k 60FPS, 100ISO, 120 shutter? Typically shooting at sunrise on this ideal setting with other DJI drones you will definitely need ND filters - any ND filters available for Avta 2?

Yep I have ND filters on the Avata 2. During sunrise/sunset you can actually get away without one and still have the right shutter. I didn't have an ND filter on here and still got the correct shutter and exposure. I reccomend the freewell filters. Hey bro! Sure thing. Just turn everything on, drone, goggles, fpv radio. Link the radio to the goggles by holding down the power button on both until they beep. Once the beeping stops, they're connected. Then connect your goggles to the fly app via the cable and it should give you the prompt to update the radio once everything is connected 😃🤙 let me know if you need more help

Great video, very informative! Just wondering , when you fly drone in Bali (Sanur, Campuhan Ridgewalk, etc) do you need to pay fee for permission to the local authority in the place. I am an Indonesian, and sometimes they ask for unofficial retribution fee to fly drone in tourism places?

Thank you! Nope there are a few places that will charge a fee, Tanah lot, Jatiluwih rice terraces. But most places you just fly with no problem 😃

Second that. Flying over the water does give you a little tricky feeling on how close you are to the surface. Wildlife eg birds a quite an expected obstacles at a time too

Approximately how many degrees of tilt have you set your gimbal to?

I vary my gimbal depending on the shot by my go-to is around 10° for slow flying, 25 for normal flying, and 35 for fast stuff. Past 35, the drone really struggles to pull out of dives, etc. The majority of this footage will have been around 20/25 degrees

What do you suggest to avoid that legendary "yaw tumble"? I am using your rates, I was happy with the settings so far. On a random day I was flying, nothing crazy, was descending and turning in a U shape, but nothing "acro-like" and it tumbled :(. Luckily it was only a little touch with the ground on a field full of grass.

It's a funny one, because it can just come up and surprise you, but the best ways to avoid are to fly smoothly. Make sure to bank into your turns, also increasing power during turns can also help to reduce it. You basically are trying to avoid flying through your prop was or to cause too much momentum without a properly orientated drone. Maybe I can make a video about this as it gets asked a lot. What sort of height would you recommend as a minimum over water to be safe but still create cinematic footage?

You can still be a couple metres up and get some lo level footage, but mid level and high shots also look great over water with much less risk.

Good instructions, better safe then sorry. The max RTH altitude is a big one, and worth mentioning if the drown starts descending on way home due to low battery one might manage to rescue the drone by walking or even swimming towards it, happened to me and I've seen other good examples, rather than just waiting and hoping at the beach front. lol This video is a good example kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWOymaCIfNd_gqc "EPIC Drone save over water. Close save" Btw. probably would be good to have clarity on DJI's care refresh cover/limitations in context of flying over water/ocean, fly aways & issues vs operator fault. =)

Yep, very true. You can override the descent manually to try and keep it flying longer, but having extra height in that situation always helps! Haha, yeah, I've seen that clip before, comedic, but we'd all try our best to save the drone from the drink. They tend to look at it on a case by case basis and they're normally very good with that sort of thing. If there was a malfunction with the drone, they'll do a warranty replacement, if not then it's Care refresh. Care refresh doesn't really have any limitations in that aspect. If you send them back a drone, it's a replacement. If you can't, then it's a flyaway 😃
