I work at an airport as a baggage handler of sorts, specifically I fix the jams on the belts when the bags get stuck. The heavier it is the more of a beating it will take, the system is rough on heavy bags. You’re better off shipping the bike commercial, less variables that could damage your stuff. Only send stuff down the belts if you’re prepared to lose it forever. It’s a miracle more bags don’t get lost or broken honestly.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. Me and my friends have flown with our bikes over a hundred times and nothing has ever happened out of the ordinary. Special bike luggage has to be used of course.

Shipping a bicycle by commercial flights is going to be: 1. Very expensive when compared with the zero dollars if within your baggage allocation on pax, 2. Still subject to damage risks, 3. Limits you to being without your bike at some stage, before and/or at the arrival at your destination. This could potentially be for several days depending on how remote the airports involved are.

So if you are compliant with FAA and IATA, your next step is to check the individual airline lithium battery policy as some allow this (eg United) while others may not.

Funny, I'm scared to fly. I own a tree service and climb for a living. I have an overland rig dedicated just for emtb trips.

Flying is one of those necessary evils, especially when transporting a bike. Nothing great about it. :)

This video implies that the information is applicable to all airline travel when it DOES NOT. You won't even be able to fly to Canada with multiple 160Wh batteries in your checked-in baggage and not even one will be allowed in carry-on. DO NOT believe any of this content for international air travel - you definately need to speak with your intended carrier because even IATA restrictions are not applied by all airlines - many just have a blanket ban on any lithium batteries over 100Wh on any passenger aircraft (AirNZ as just one example).

point taken. Yes international anything is always a wildcard.
